Maternity Insurance?

it's my understanding to get new insurance outside of a company plan you have to wait a year for maternity coverage to kick in. We are currently looking into a plan for maternity leave. I am self employeed and really need my income. So this is a must for us.

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I think my coverage is as basic as they come. I have a $1500 deductible. After that, I am responsible for 10% of everything else. Good thing is the $1500 adds up quick. It includes co-pays, medications, etc. So I've almost met it for the year. So I guess I'm looking at 10% for the hospital stay and circumsizing my boy :)

I've been paying $130 per month to my doc for his services at the hospital. That also goes towards my deductible. So once I make that final payment to him, I will only owe the hospital.

If that makes sense...

But, is your insurance through your company or husbands company, or is it an individual/family plan that you pay for yourself?

i'm a teacher and have fabulous benefits, thank goodness. i pay $15 co-pay for every doctor's visit and everything else is covered. if i get pregnant before i am tenured, i'd have to look into disability insurance - that's different, but maybe worth looking into if you're planning to take any time off to spend w/ baby. i have horizon bcbs.

Honestly, I have NO clue what mine covers! LOL.

I should def look into that since I am getting "baby on the brain" recently.

:) I didn't even know about pre-conceiving appointments and am so wowed by all the stuff there is out there!

Good luck to all those trying to conceive!

Here's the "conclusion" for those who are interested. Although I have for my own full blown health insurance for the last 4 years (Thank God I had it, because I had to have 3 surgeries and a million tests in the first 2 years of having it) Anyway, after speaking with numerous insurance companies, they have all basically told me that you cannot recieve maternity bennefits on a family/individual plan. The only way to receive the bennefits is to switch to my company or my FI's companies insurance. Which would mean I lose my doctor. It's pretty sad that a hard working girl whos paid for her own insurance for 4 years, and who faithfully pays taxes cannot add on maternity to her policy. Infact it's absurd!!!!!!! The good news is that the doctor patient relationship is a big factor. I have an appt. with my doctor on August 22nd and am going to discuss this all with her. Because she is so awesome, and because she's been there through my surgeries, and we're close, I'm hoping she will work something out with me. That's my only chance!!!! If she can't work something out for whatever reason, I will stick with my current insurance and use her as my doctor anyway, and pay up the ass in the end. For those of you wondering "what's sooooo good about this doctor, that she's going through alllll this trouble" I'll tell you my "medical story" as quickly as I can: After visiting atleast 15 different doctors, and 2 years of CONSTANT PAIN in my lower abdomen, and all of them telling me there was nothing wrong, I FINALLY found Dr. Bubier. She was the first doctor that actually listened to me and didn't think I was crazy. She agreed to do an exploritory surgery, and try and figure out what the pain was caused by. She diagnosed me with Interstitial Cystitis (IC) it's a non-curable bladder disease that is mainly found in women over 40. I had the worst case she had ever seen and I was 20 at the time. Let me also remind you that she is an OBGYN who specializes in fertility and is not a Urologist, and could have easily over-looked my bladder durring the surgery, but she went above and beyond and thought she would do hydrodistention on my bladder just to make sure it wasn't IC. The diagnosis sucked, but it's not life-threatening and can be managed with life-style changes. If it weren't for her, I would probably still be walking around today not knowing what the hell is wrong. I have referred atleast 5 women to her, all of which LOVED her and wish the would have known about her sooner. Sorry I could go on and on, I just wanted to emphasize that she's 1 in a million and not having her as my baby doctor isn't an option. Thanks to everyone who gave their feedback and information, I appreciate it so much! For anyone who's interested I will post what the August 22nd apt. holds for me, and let you all know the insurance side of it. This has been a HUGE learning experience, and I want to be able to give some advice to anyone who's in the same boat as I am. Thanks again ladies!!!!
