Jamaica and Alternative Lifestyles

Recommended Posts

I'd possibly give them the heads up but as long as they aren't snogging or holding hands in public its not going to be obvious.

I don't just think its Jamaica that has the prob - its a bigish issue where I live. I don't care live and let live but a lot of people don't have that attitude

My next door neighbor is jamaican and he said that theres many iunsafe places in jamaica for 'white' tursists. That being said-(hes lived here for 35 years-but goes to his house a few times a year in jamaica) I wuld say the resort is fine-but be careful out shopping and what not. I mean theres no reason for anyone to KNOW someone is gay-its not like they will wear a sign, right? Good Luck.

ha! My DH said the same about all the performers at ROR. He thought the men were prettier than some of the women.

I would definitely tell them. Its a safety issue, and if they don't already know there are problems, they need to know.

Not to be negative, but I'd also be MORE concerned in a private villa in a more secluded location than in a larger resort area. In a large resort, you can blend and not be noticed. But, in a smaller area, the staff is bound to take notice and could cause problems. The resort I was married at was in a very small town outside of Negril. The staff was aware of EVERYTHING that went on... and I'm pretty sure the entire community of Little Bay knew about stuff that was going on during my wedding.

OMG too funny because we felt the same about the male performers at ROR...lol

Somone I know in JA said that it's not illegal to be homosexual but it is illegal to be caught in the act so to speak. The general attitude towards it is not favorable but they shouldn't worry to the point of not going, just being aware of where they are should help.

Thanks to all of you who weighed in on this. We will discuss it with them, just so they are aware of the culture there. I am also going to run this by the owner of the villa (who lives in VA), and she will likely give me the honest scoop.

Obviously, my concern is for their safety, but if it was truly illegal, then I would be worried that someone could "report" it, and they could end up charged with a crime in a foreign country. That would be an absolute nightmare.

Having just returned from my Jamaica scouting trip, it seemed like the police there are all dressed like SWAT team members, and the locals appear somewhat afraid of them. So . . . I really don't wanna mess with them!
