Yea i guess your right..for the cocktail hour i was thinking about the snack part of it not the alcohol part. Because people can just go get drinks at another bar too. If you dont mind me asking what is your total coming to with the ultimate package? Ive read alot of reviews from people saying that they did let them substiute things if they werent going to use somethign out of their package..you should at least try to talk them into it.for your cocktail hour..if you havent already done so already.

I just emailed Aurora who sent me email to Karina about trying to switch out my photography portion for extra video.  Karina just emailed me back saying that it is not in their policy.  Which I don't understand how one company Dreams as a whole can be so inconsistent with all of their wedding departments.  I'm going to keep fighting this issue because like the rest of you I'm sick of the nickel and diming.  I almost switched our location to an off-site location but now a lot of our guests we expected to come won't be making it to our wedding and we may end up with only 20 guests now (originally planning on 50).

I agree that the extra cost for the cocktail hour are ridiculous when you can just have everyone meet up at a bar and casually get drinks and talk before the reception begins.  I have it on my spreadsheet prepared to pay for an extra hour if we absolutely have to just so it's in my budget in case because we hired a DJ and he will be playing until 10:30. Fortunately I'm still budgeting for 50 just in case they all change their minds but doubtful :(.

Ashleyciv,

I guess you're right. I should try to get something for it...we are wanting to extend our reception by an hour instead of the cocktail hour maybe I can negotiate for this. Hmmmm...I wonder if I could have the cocktail hour at the reception site? It'll cost about the same to extend my reception as pay for the cocktail hour, but I'll get food with the cocktail hour...

My total is about $6100USD, but I decided to splurge on some things because we received some unexpected help from our parents. About $8k total once I consider the stuff I've purchased to bring with us (including my dress, and his outfit...).

I just keep telling myself that what I'm getting down there would cost me at least $25k up here. So it is still cheaper in the end.

sstryker,

yes that is what i keep telling my fiance...what we are paying to have it there isnt even close to what it would be here!! Yea i def try to negotiate something something with them, we arent sure what we want to negotiate yet because our main concern is if it goes over 20 people (im sure it will) and all those extra costs. So we are still weighing our options..love package vs free package, cocktail hr vs non, and gold dinner vs silver dinner ,we are all about the surf and turf dinner but do not want to pay to get the ultimate wedding package, so im not sure what we're doing about that!!! $6100 usd isnt bad..our goal is $5000 but again it depends how many people decide to come.

Ashleyciv,

Our original goal was $5000 too...oh well! Luckily my FI understands that even though we're still shelling out a good chunk of change, it is cheaper there than here. He's talked to a few friends who've gotten married and found out how much they've spent, and he can't believe it! And really in the end, even though you've got to consider travel costs on top of it all, we'll still get a week with friends and family not just one day :)

mimi73 - Don't feel obligated to tip, but in my experience tipping always gets you better service! We are going to tip our WC as well I'm going to make up one of my oot bags and give it to her. We will tip all the reception servers at least $20 each, and the WC $40 - $50.

That is what we are doing.  We are going to get married at some point once we return.  We are still having our wedding on the 5th day so it still falls in line with the 'rules' of being in the country for 4 business day previous so that no one will be suspicious.  I quadruple checked to make sure that they are able to make it look completely legit so that no one will be the wiser.  We will be saving all of the costs associated to the 'legalization' of the destination wedding and yet still celebrating with everyone.  My massage therapist did it this way and said it was the best decision they made.  She also confirmed that it is best to tell NO ONE unless you don't care if they know.

We will be doing this, we're going to get legally married a couple days before we leave, but we aren't telling anyone we are doing this. We just want to avoid all the bloodwork  and translation and paperwork between here and Mexico.
