I am in the process of filling in my form now. I still haven't decided exactly what we are going to do, but right now I am leaning toward having a cocktail hour right after the wedding followed by dinner at the Seaside Grill. It's hard to make the decision without ever having been there. I still go back and forth about having an actual private reception, but I guess I can always change my plans once I get there. I do agree though that the extra fee seems a little silly for a small group. I will have less than 20 total. I can see if we had a much larger group, but for such a small group it doesn't make much sense. Honestly, I am still considering doing a cocktail hour followed by the buffet just for simplicity. I also didn't know until recently that the Portofino wine cellar would be an extra $200 charge or else I would have probably gone that route. Have you made your final choices?

Congratulations! I am still working out my details and really don't know exactly what we are doing. Where are you having your reception? I am very excited for the whole thing and to spend some great time with our friends and family, but I am not good at all these decisions. I guess that is why I chose destination to begin with. :-)

Hi erinrachel! Your plans sound wonderful! If I had a bigger than 10 group, I would probably have chosen the buffet as well to minimize costs. I had originally planned to have the dreams of love package, when I thought I would have around 20 guests. Now most of my guests have backed out (only have 9), and our parents are throwing us a huge AHR when we get back, so we've decided to just do a small (free) intimate wedding down there.

 

I think I will probably do this: 3 pm - ceremony 4pm - cocktails/champagne and cake at the sugar reef bar area next to beach/pictures taken during this time. 6-6:30 go down and get a place in line for one of the restaurants (it will depend on which ones are open because some are closed certain nights). I'm hoping Seaside grill for the open air factor, but if not, bordeaux would probably be second choice, third choice: buffet or theme night.

After dinner (8pm) go to the bar and have a few more drinks, dance a little, hit up the disco. We don't plan on it being a late night since we are waking up at 6 am for a TTD the next day. At least that's my plan~ LOL~!

If you are thinking of bright colours and a mexican theme there is nothing you cannot buy in PDC! Tons of traditional styled stuff such as colourful pottery, tableware and linens. Also a massive assortment of mexican themed novelties perfect for favours such as mini tequilas, cigars, hot sauces, sweets and dried spices. Most are gift wrapped up nicely already and sold as souvenirs.
You can also get really nice stuff for gifts such as leather goods, jewellry, beaded items, handmade photo albums and designer goods. If you have a full day I would recommend you shop around, there are gift emporiums selling ALL the above goods under one roof which is great for convenience but less likely to haggle. The shops available their range from back street market stalls to designer boutiques!
Go with an open mind and the nerve to haggle and I guarantee you wont come away empty handed.
Most goods on the street stalls (and in a lot of smaller shops) are massively over priced so definately dont pay sticker price!
If I had my time again I would buy everything in PDC and spend far less time stressing about it at home.

I have heard that the beach and shoreline changes slightly depending on season.
At the time we were there you didn't need water shoes for the hotels beach. There was approx a 1 metre wide area that was a little shaley and rocky underfoot as you enter the sea but nothing too awful and once past this it was soft sand bottom.
I would recommend water shoes if you plan to walk up the beach away from the resort boundary in either direction as rocks, rubbish and wierd sharp thorns (that im assuming blow in from the jungle) are common.
Its also worth noting here that on one of our daily walks I almost stepped on a hyperdermic needle!!!
No-one appears to own or maintain this area but if you stick to the shoreline its definately worth the walk.
I also recommend water shoes if you are planning on doing any trips such as xel ha, xcaret, cenotes etc.

I am wondering how late the Sugar Reef Bar is open? The night before our wedding we want to have an informal meet and greet at the bar after our rehearsal since all our guests will have arrived by that point. I have been waiting for over a week to hear back from Aurora at Dreams---They have yet to get back to me. Any insight from you all would be great! Thanks!

we finally bit the bullet! We've put our deposit down for the week of Apr 30 2011! It feels so real now.

How far in advance did everyone book their wedding date? What time of the day is best?

Congrats on booking! My wedding is the week after yours and we booked at Thanksgiving last year. Our ceremony is going to be at 4:30 or 5:00, I just told Aurora that was what I wanted and I would eventually decide on our start time.

Congrats Sara! If you go for a late afternoon ceremony, make sure you leave enough time for photos afterward...1 1/2 hr at least before the reception. The resort is really large and there are great photo opportunities all over the place...you don't want to feel rushed for photos or for your reception. At least that's what I'm planning...my reception starts at 6:30, so we've got 2 hrs for family, group, couple photos.
