Ottawa Brides! Makeup ideas?

I've been thinking of going to MAC to have a makeup trial/lesson and getting makeup from them for the wedding, but that's only because I really don't use much makeup and don't know how to apply it. And I'd heard decent things about MAC.

I browsed this forum and came across a thread by Martha about Laura Mercier makeup and Jenny piped in about Smashbox.

Laura Mercier is sold through Holt Renfrew in Canada and although we have a store in Ottawa, that one doesn't have a salon, so I don't know if they do makeup or if I'd have to go to Toronto.

Smashbox, I have no idea where it's sold.

Anyway, anyone from the Ottawa-area or surrounding smaller-town Ontario on the board, please help!

I'd say that I'd be going for a very soft, summery look. Nothing too dark or dramatic.

TIA,

Andrea

I went with my daughter to Sephora and I see there is one in the Rideau Centre in Ottawa. Someone there applied the make up to one side of her face and she did the other. They also gave us a picture of a face and told us where to put everything. They let me write everything down so we didn't have to buy it all at once. They have Smashbox products.

Just recently I got a flyer from Shoppers Drug Mart and they are carrying some of the Boots No.7 products some of the girls were talking about on here. I'd check that out too.

The shopping channel The Shopping Channel - Official Site carrys Smashbox so once you know what you want check that out as they have really good deals.

shoppers drug mart also says Smashbox and you can get a cosmetician to do your makeup. That's what I ended up doing (a spur of the moment thing, I was planning on going to MAC but then was at Shoppers and the lady offered to do it so I figured why not) and I really liked what she did and all it cost was that I had to buy one product (normal the cheap make-up like covergirl, but one product from the more expensive lines)

Is that new? I didn't realize we had Sephora here?!? I was just in NYC and wanted to go there because I thought we didn't have it in Canada :) That's good news!pinkie.gif

I feel like I've been living under a makeup-less rock :) I have never noticed Smashbox at Shopper's and didn't even think of using the Shopper's cosmeticians.
Thanks for the advice. I feel a lot more relaxed now :)

I knew we have Sephora around the GTA but I went to the website to see if there is a store in Ottawa and it says there is. I hope if you go and check it out that it is still there :)

You're welcome! Good luck!

Yes the Sephora is new, I'd say the last month or two. It's where Bata shoes used to be a white ago (kinda an obscure corner of the mall)

When I got my make-up done at SDM, the lady used Lise Watier products. She said that and Smashbox were the best, I think maybe Smashbox was more expensive which is maybe why I went for Lise Watier.

I love MAC products but they do charge to do a make-up application and buying all the product would add up, so you have to be sure that you want to go with MAC before you commit to the make-up application. The other thing is, the people who work there tend to wear so much make-up (as in, it looks like stage make-up) so I don't know how well they do natural... They are really helpful and knowledgable if you just want ideas -so maybe just stop in to the store at Rideau and then try Sephora too to compare. I think that is probably what I'm going to do in the next month or two.

  • 4 months later...

I went and got my makeup done at the new store in Place D'Orleans - Murale

It was funny - turns out I know one of the assistant managers there. We used to work together at Sassy Bead in the market.

Anyway, she hooked me up with one of the makeup artists and he spent a while figuring out what to put on me and then applying and teaching me how to apply. $167 later, I have 2 cream eyeshadows by Bobbi Brown (that do not come off at all they are insanely waterproof), 1 Cargo foundation (that is incredible), a bronzer that I'm not totally sure about, and a nice lipgloss by Smashbox.

I'm going to go back to Shopper's someday soon and get a few other things really cheaply:

bone eyeshadow, a few brushes, transluscent powder, and new mascara.

He did one eye with copper and blue I think and the other one with pink and purple. I hated the purple, so he replaced it with a nice grey. That's the eye I'm going with. Pink lid, grey eyeliner and bone highlighter.

Looking at the pics that I took of myself afterward in the bathroom when it was darker out, I'm not so sure i like the look of the bronzer... I'll post pics tomorrow. Too tired to load them right now!
