Has anyone heard of a DIGITAL PERM?

I get my hair Thermally Reconditioned (curly to straight) on a 3-4 month basis. My advice is to wait until after your wedding in October! Although I’ve gotten the process done about 5 times now, I even waited until after my wedding to get my HORRIBLE 5 month old roots redone lolol!

1) Even if you have had the same amazing person work on your hair, there is always a risk of damage. I got a bend once (yes, a physical bend in my hair) that had to be flattened out at my next retouch…4 months later!

2) 80% of the time an apprentice works with the stylist (or even more so) on your hair because the process is so complex. If you dont know them or if you get the wrong apprentice, you get one side of your head messed up!

3) If you get the process done too close to wedding day, it would be impossible to style it until 2-3 weeks after. AKA you can’t heat style or finger style it…not even tuck it behind your ears!

4) A follow up to #3: If you would like to color your hair, you wouldn’t be able to do so for at least 2-3 weeks before or after the process and it can only be semi-permanent. Plus, say farewell to highlights if that was your thing!

5) Another follow up to #3: Jumping into a refreshing tub of chlorine (your resort’s pool) is out of the question unless you wear a dorky cap (like I did lolol) or you know how your hair will react to the chemical…it may do nothing or it could wipe away the $$ and time you put into getting it!

Then there's the having to cut it out if you want a change, roots growing in, ect ect. It may sound like you have little options when you get a TR/Digital Perm, and you do lol, but with all these restrictions it’s my favorite investment <3

It’s all about the right timing, research, and what kind of person you are with your hair! cheer2.gif

I'm totally going to do this around Thanksgiving this year. I had no idea this kind of perm exsisted (thanks!) -- and I talked to my FI and he thinks it would be a good idea!

... when I get it done, I'll be sure to post pics. I have had a hard time finding pictures of non-asian girls getting it done (understandably so).

I've had a digital perm twice so far. (My hair is still permed). I got it done both times in SF in Japantown @ a place called Arty. I love it and plan to keep getting it permed. I paid about $200 or so (including a hair cut/trim). They had a TON of pictures showing different types of digital perms... I know it's kind of hard to see in my signature picture on the forum, but my hair is digitally permed there... Got nice loose beachy waves and I said goodbye to my curling iron. =) For those of you who live in LA, there are lots of places in Koreatown that do it too for similar prices. I'll see if I have a better picture of my hair...

Here is a better picture of my digital perm. It was taken about 1 month after I got it permed. I guess it depends on your hair type and how often you wash it but mine lasted about 4 to 5 months.

Hmm, I think it would depend on how short your hair is, because the very top crown part of the head doesn't really get permed... It might also depend on the type of digital perm you get, so if you get looser waves, it might just add body with not a lot of noticeable curls.

I got a digital perm over the weekend. I got it done at Japan town in San Francisco. I love it. It gave my hair the body it so desperately needed. I highly recomend this salon if anyone is thinking about it (Welcome to ARTY!).

Here's a pic of me...sorry I don't have any make up on, but I did fix my hair embarrassed.gif

If anyone is wondering what it is, here's the definition:

The digital perm is a renovation of an old idea. One of the earliest methods of “permanent waving†used metal rods through which electric current was run to heat them, with chemical solutions applied in order to create “permanent waves†in the hair. The process was cumbersome, and often severely damaging to the hair.

However, modern technology has revisited the idea in light of the advances made in chemical texture services with Japanese Thermal Restructuring techniques. The new “Digital Perms†use specially devised equipment that are combined with specially formulated waving solutions to combine chemical and thermal waving techniques to give smoother, healthier waves. The heat application is controlled and more productive, and the results are smooth, clean waves and curls in the hair.

The look is especially popular among women with long hair and traditionally straight hair types. This has made the process extremely popular in Asia and other regions where straight hair is the ethnic norm. Most digital perm machines come with a wide range of rod sizes, so virtually any permed look is possible.

As with the Japanese Restructuring and Straightening service, you should look for salons that have specially trained technicians before booking this type of appointment. Be sure to do your homework and check out the technicianâ€s experience level with Digital Perms and ask to see a portfolio and references.
