Hi all :)

My name is Emily, and I'm really considering RPRM to be the number one choice on our destination wedding. Everyone's photos & reviews are just stunning.  I just have no idea as where to begin, I'm not good at planning and get stressed out to quickly, ha. Lets hope once I confirm everything it'll die down just a little. I am planning on having a symbolic ceremony April of 2013. (Does anyone know if the religious ceremony is what they call the symbolic ceremony?)

Also I can't get any quotes on the rooms yet, so I don't want to book a place that is way out of price for my family & friends that are coming, so I don't know when I should reserve my date. Also I got word that with under 20 people, I can't have a cocktail hour or reception, does anyone think I can find away around this? Because I'd really like to have some drinks & dancing with my friends and family afterwards that did travel all that way for us.

Thanks ladies

Hi Ladies,

My name is Emily and finally narrowed in on the decision to have a destination wedding. I would like a symoblic type wedding (as i planned to get married in IL first) sometime in April of 2013 I have been looking at the resorts, and have always loved the RIU's although never once been to mexico. However looking at photos and reading reviews I'm pretty certain I want my wedding at RPRM. I'm just the type to get all stressed out & what not, and do not even know where to begin.

When looking at the RIU site I'm not able to book any rooms, so I'm not aware of the cost. So I don't want to begin picking out a date, if I don't know how much it'll set friends and family back. Does anyone know how far in advance you book rooms for the RIU's? or the cost of the resort?

Also I heard through the grapevine that this resort does not really want you to have a cocktail hour nor, a reception if you are under 20 guests. However I really truly want to have something to celebrate afterwards for everyone who has come down to celebrate as well as have some special dances. Anyone been there with under 20 guests, how did everything go? or does anyone know a way around this?

Anyother useful information?

Thank you ladies for being here cheesy.gif

Shes2013- Congrats and Welcome!

Prices and open reservations will not be available for the resort probably 10 months outs.  I remember planning my wedding and wanted to set a date right away but I had to wait until the resort opened the reservations for the next year.  For the best costs, I would not recommend going throught the direct RIU site, I noticed their prices are a little inflated.  For a party of 20 guests, try finding a travel agent that can book your flights, coordinate your car services to and from the airport, and have them find you the best deals.

I had about 14 ppl total and went through this site and found a travel agent.  Wendy Hicks was awesome!  Travel agents usually can price match if prices go down throughout the year and should not charge you any extra fees.

As for the cocktail hour, my guests had a cocktails by the lobby while they waited for us to finish taking pictures.  We didn't serve food at cocktail, they just had drinks by the bar and it seemed fine with everyone, since the resort feeds you so well.   After cocktail, we had a private dinner.  We didn't have a full on reception and didn't really mind.  With less than 20 people, it was very intimate and was perfect.  We did bring our our music system and had our first dance as well as dances with mom and dad.  Believe me, with or without a reception, your friends and family will not care (hopefully).  I felt the same way about not having the traditional reception with the bouquet toss, music and dancing.. but in the end it was perfect not having all of that.  No matter what, they will be talking for years about how great your destination wedding was!

Being married just a year ago, our guests want us to all go back and do it all over again.

Welcome She2013 & congratulations!

I booked my wedding at RPRM for April 2, 2013.  I went ahead and booked 25 rooms to start through TA Wndy Hicks with Wright Travel.  I found her on here through all the wonderful brides raving about her.  She is wonderful to work with.  She was able to give me group rates this far out.  Because I am getting married Easter 2013 Break I wanted to book as soon as possible since that is a busy school holiday week for families.  They are not giving many incentives at this time, however, Wendy assured me that if the rates go down throughout the course of the year, we can ask the resort to match the rate for my group.

Not sure what your budget is, but the resort is not really offering and "incentives" this far out...although I am sure as time gets closer there will be better deal that we can ask to have credited to our group rate.  Quotes are based on a 3 Night Minimum - For 7 nights (including transportation to & from the airport) - we got a quote of like $1600 per person.

I believe the symbolic ceremony is the same as a religious ceremony.  They are not "legally" recognized although you receive a "symbolic certificate of marriage."  My FI & I are having a Civil Ceremony there which is the legal ceremony.

I am not 100% sure on the cocktail hour/reception details as of yet...we will have over 20 people so given that i hope to have a DJ and do some type of cocktail hour/reception, but syill have not figured that part out yet.  I guess based on my budget and how many people decide to book I will then make those decisions.

Keep in touch - I would love to plan alongside you~

Hello Future 2012-2013 Brides!

I have been reading through all of your posts and continue to get more and more excited about the upcoming ceremonies and trips.

I just sent Wendy Hicks an email based on your recommendations and posts and can't wait to hear back from her.

I am a school teacher so I have sent the date for June 2013 during my summer vacation.  I am concerned about the heat, but my hope is that it won't be quite as popular as the cooler Mexican months so there will be later ceremony times available.

Additionally, before I came across the extensive RPRM threads, I was looking at the Riu in Cancun: Palace Las Americas.  Did any of you look at this resort also and finally choose the RPRM? If so, what made you choose this over the other?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.  I look forward to discussing all the planning details with you over the next year! CONGRATS on your engagements and upcoming weddings!

-Janette

Hola Emily,

Congrats on your upcoming wedding!!!!

The symbolic ceremony is very similar to the legal one but with no legal binding. It's a great option for non-religious couples who wish to have a short 20 minute ceremony without having to go through blood tests and further paperwork : )

For your cocktail and reception hour I think it's a matter or working with your On Site Wedding Coordinator and getting creative. Here are some ideas:

1. Cocktail hour in the beach with appetizers and music (extra cost)

2. Semi-private reception dinner at the Mezzanine Section of the Chilli's Restaurant. Perfect spot for intimate receptions. Check out Alice + Ian's Wedding Story for more ideas!!!

3. Semi-private cocktail hour at the Lobby Bar or Theater. Know that this means that the area is shared with other guests but you can still request to have a few tables set-up for your group. This option worked great for Kit + Wayland

4. Reception at Bota Fogo Restaurant. You might be able to rent the restaurant to have a private reception with DJ here. It mostly depends on the hotel's occupancy and availability. Ask your WC.

Good luck and happy planning!!!
