Oh wow. It's heartbreaking enough to have your baby in the NICU, but then this as well! I'd be freaked out too.

 

But hopefully pp are right and this tightens things up. From what I gather, they aren't giving out the drug anymore right?

 

I'm sure your little one will be fine Martha... but if you still don't feel good about having your baby there, any way you can switch hospitals?

It's already been mentioned Martha, but it's true- when something like this happens, it actually becomes a safer place to be because they're going to be EXTRA cautious about anything else like this happening. Poor babies...

Here's me from a hospital pharmacists perspective....

 

I agree that it is unexcusable that these errors have happened in so many institutions lately, and my heart goes out to all of the families affected. Like was said before, its hard enough for these families to have to deal with their babies being in the NICU, but then to have the extra stress of worrying about something like this. My hospital has numerous safeguards in place to help prevent tragic errors like this, and I'm sure that the hospital in question here will be 1000% more aware of their every action.

 

Heparin products are still widely used, as there are really not a whole lot of other options available. There have been some products recalled, but that was more due to manufacturing issues.

 

I hate to place blame for these errors on any one person (i.e the pharmacist...and not just because I am one!!)...it is more fair to put the blame on a failure somewhere in the process. In a hospital there are many opportunities for mistakes, but also just as many for these mistakes to be caught and corrected before any harm is done. I'm sure that the hospital has broken down their step by step process, from order entry and preparation, to administration of medications, in order to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.

 

OK, that was my rant.....

 

AND AGAIN....I'm sure that you will have a happy and healthy little one, and that none of this will even be an issue for you!

Unfortunately, my doctor only delivers at this hospital.

 

I just have to wait and see what happens in 4 months.
