Last name confusion!

Recommended Posts

it would be nice if you could do the name change thing before you move, that way you could just set everything up in your new name, but I am not srue that's possible!

i am just a little bitter right now since I am still going back to my maiden name, and i will just have to go to my new married name in a few months! it's just a pain - that's all!

it's different for everything. my drivers lisence is about 3-6 weeks, same with teh passport i think. some things you can just fill out online and it's almost immediate (these are the unofficial accounts, usually no security measures required). most places require that you send a certified copy of the name change document (credit cards, mortgages, banks, etc.). just takes patience!

I'm doing the exact same thing. I'm keeping mine for a while - if I decide to change it later then I will.

melissa it's different in alberta than it is in ontario - in ontario i just had to print out a form, fill it out and fax it in...they asked things like what i want my new name to be, why i want to change it, if i have a criminal record, etc. easy peasy

here's the link to doing it in alberta...

Hey Melissa, I have a question for you...I am another Albertan and thanks for that link but I was just curious if you are having to do a legal name change to take your name to your middle name or is it just something your allowed to move around since you are getting married? I only ask this because I don't want to officially/legally change my name because then my birth certificate would then have my husbands name on it i think, and i don't want that to change i just want to be able to add my husbands name instead! Okay don't know if that made any sense but if there are any other Canadian brides out their who did move their last name to their middle name did you have to fill our the legal name change form or were you just able to change it because you are married?

I'm totally late to this thread... but I am so worried about it too!

I love my FI so much, and love the idea of family connection and such.

BUT, I am a feminist, and it's weird to lose all my family connection and history, and gain his which is not mine!!

And my last name is already SO long, and so is his, so definitely no hypenated names, and middle name doesn't cut it. Ugh, I don't know.

Anyway, what I was going to say is that I know lots of people that just haven't done anything about it for a while, and just kept thinking about it, so I will do that too... and see what i feel like when i have kids and such. My future Sister in Law just finally changed her name this week because she is having her first baby in a few months... So, I'll see, and wait.

Ann how come you decided to change to your maiden name when you wedding is so close? I never changed back to mine after my divorce, so I'll leave my ex's married name to my new married name.. (course their are other reasons why I didn't want to change back to my maiden name)
