Barcelo Maya

i sure did - all the flowers you have to choose from are absolutely beautiful!! (also, if you like the shape of a bouquet but not the colours you can have them change it, or if there are specific colours you want you can ask...not sure if your WC will tell you that or not)

Yes, I'm going for most everything the Barcelo has (like flowers, food, set up, decorations etc), EXCEPT for the photographer.

Photography was really important to me, so I"ve hired Elizabeth Medina, who's portfolio I think is incredible!

I have to pay for her and her assistant to stay at the hotel for one night, but that's worth it for me. :)

John was almost dead set against hiring Erick...he thought that the resort photographers would be fine and that we didn't need to put out that extra money, but as soon as he saw the end result he completely changed his mind. In fact, the other day we were just talking about photographers and stuff and he brought up that he wished now we had hired Erick to do the entire wedding. Don't know if that will help Dan change his mind or not, but it's worth a shot :P

  • 2 weeks later...

Melissa (our guru! What would we do without you!), how big are the different sections of the resort?

I have 80 guests! Can't believe it, most of them are staying at the Barcelo Tropical, but they're all arriving at different times during the week. I'm making up the welcome letters, and I'm wondering how they will all find each other and me...

What do you think? For the rehearsal dinner I will just say, we'll be at the buffet at the Tropical from 6 (she won't reserve space for us... but we're just going to try to make it work!)

And for folks arriving on different days, is it reasonable to say, we'll be at the barcelo Tropical beach area? Or something like that? i have never been there, and have no idea!

Thanks for any advice, I mean, how will our guests even find our wedding??

HA! that was my next question, if we could make some sort of "reservation" for a rehearsal dinner or welcome dinner, or should we just tell our guest meet us here at this time. oooh or meet us at "this" bar for a welcome cocktail hour. I don't know how to work it either.

We asked to reserve a spot for our Welcome Breakfast...everything was good...we confirmed it with one of the managers....we showed up in the morning and they refused to seat us all together. I ended up in a shouting match with one of the hosts (he was pretty rude) and another manager ended up coming over and trying to sort things out. It took probably a good 20 minutes but they finally reserved a section for us. THat was such a pain in the butt.

What I would do is definately arrange a time to meet everyone (put it in your welcome letter...tell them to meet on the beach in front of the Marina bar or the Tropical lobby or something) and you can explain where the wedding will be and what time to be there and stuff like that. Everyone who checks in is given a map of the resort so it will be easy enough for them to find things. You could probably even photocopy the map and circle where your wedding is going to be and put it in the welcome bags.

Each section of the resort contains about 4 buildings so it's pretty big...but it's easy to tell which section is which if you're walking along the pools (there is a pool for each section starting with the Beach, Cariba, Colonial, Tropical).

The Tropical pool is the best one to hang out at, just FYI :P

Thanks Melissa! What we do without you!

So, just to double check -- do you recommend we do it all when we get there? I.e. once we've figured out what the best spot is, just get maps, circle and photocopy, and put them in the welcome packet?

And, do you think they'll put the welcome packet in the rooms for us?

And, how did you get them to agree to reserve a section for you? She keeps telling us absolutely not! I guess we can ask again when we get there....

Melissa, it's getting really close!!! What else do I need to do?

Yea I'd recommend doing it when you get there. That way you know for sure where the wedding site will be and you can circle it on the maps. That's probably the easiest way to get people there.

I'm pretty sure they'll put the bags in the rooms for you, but I think it might cost $$...it doesn't hurt to ask though!

When you get there, go to the buffet and ask to speak to a manager and explain your situation and ask if they will reserve a section for you. Normally when you get there only one side is open until it fills up, and then they open the other side, close the first one, wait till that one fills up, open the first one again, etc. So I'm sure they could reserve you a section in one of the closed sections. But make sure you speak to a manager, get their name and confirm it with them before (maybe the day before) your date. If they give you any problems you can say you arranged it with "so & so" and confirmed it the day before.

You know what might even be good? Have the manager sign something saying that they will reserve a section for you (if they do agree) that way there is no disputing it whatsoever!
