LOL)  It was VERY VERY VERY hot so please make sure you check out the weather.  I don't think anybody has a date coming up too soon so  maybe it will cool off by everyone else's wedding.

FI and I are planning on having an AHR...but just planning it for our backyard...our house is not the biggest but our backyard is huge and would be perfect with a couple tents.

Nothing says that it has to be in a big venue..I couldn't justify doing that...becuase it's basically a whole other wedding you are paying for.  Make it fun and casual :)

In the past week FI and I have come to the decision that we will probably not have an AHR as we planned. I'm kinda bummed but kinda relieved at the same time. I feel like it was too much for me to plan and the fact that it was going to be Mardi Gras weekend, things were just really pricey. We would have spent the money we saved doing a DW on the AHR. Also, FI spent the week at home vitising his parents and they said that they thought it was too much to have to come to MX in Nov then have to turn around and come to N.O. in March. I kinda understand this, but at the same time I'm a little disappointed in this. FI and I have been living together for 3 years and not once have they been to visit. I think it's because his mom isn't keen on our pre-marital living arrangement but that's just specualtion. We could be living in a matchbox for all they know. I'm ok with not having a huge party. I was always fine with just having our wedding in MX and calling it a day. FI and his mom were the ones pushing to have an AHR because a lot of their family will not be there.

Anyway, now I'm torn because we put it in everyone's heads that we were going to do something that weekend. We even paid a deposit on the venue. Now, some people that I wanted to be involved in some way aren't going to be involved at all, i.e. my grandmother and uncle. We still wanted to do something but if his parents and possibly his BM won't be there I think it's a little pointless. So, one of our thoughts is to just do something like a bbq or a random party but not necessarily have that be connected to our wedding. I feel that this would be a fun idea especially since it will be Mardi Gras weekend. Or we can have an AHR for our one year anniversary. Any thoughts? Anyone going thru something similar?

$1100 is ridiculous for alterations....I would definitely look around for someone else...I'm sure you can find someone a lot cheaper who will still do an amazing job.

When I bought it the sales girl told me the alterations would be an easy fix (Like $400 or so) and I thought she'd be right. Such a bummer....now I am desperatley trying to find someone to do my alterations in my price range. It's just scary because I want my dress to be in good hands. Wish me luck ladies.

Trust me, Carolina is great! I know that there are only 2 trained WC's working there and they just hired 2 others that are learning anf trying to catch up. Carolina mentioned that her colleague (the other trained WC) had more than 200 weddings. I don't know how many she has but I know it is a lot. Do you have a TA? Maybe she can make the intro for you. Mine did.

I know! I'm sure I will figure something out. I had budgeted $400 or $500 for alterations and I thought that was a lot. Do you girls know what is normal?

Keep looking. That seems way too expensive. Perhaps there is a forum for local ladies on here, then ask them where they had their dresses altered. These are the basic prices I have been finding locally (Toronto):

Bridal Gowns & Wedding Dresses

Hem $50-150
Sides take in/out $40-80
Bustle $15-50
Bust Dart $30-50
Lace $70-120
Bracups/Straps/Shoulders $15-50

So I think your budget for $400-500 should be plenty, unless you were redesigning the dress. Good luck!

I know that it depends on the dress...did the place where you got it have any reccommendations of where to do?  What kind of alterations do you need?

My 1st wedding..I am pretty sure that I only paid about $300, and they had a LOT of things to chnge...they took it in...hemmed the crap out of it (I'm only 5'2") and then because I am abnormal and decided to not care about dieting the very last couple of weeks before the wedding as opposed to crazy dieting..they had to then let it out just a couple days before the wedding :)

And I agree with (I think it was Amy), show them the wedding pictures and make them feel included!

This is another great suggestion. There's actually a really trendy restaurant here where I wanted to do the AHR. They close the restaurant for private events but would have been too expensive for 200ppl to attend. I'll present this to FI too and see what he says.

I'm shaking in my boots!! cry.gif BUT I'll say that I may be the most timid of them all when it comes to being "sexy" and all, soooo if I can do it, you can too!!!! I'll keep you posted on the experience but I cannot promise to let you see depending on how they come out. I'm scared!! Lol.

That resort is definitely worth cutting some things out. I hope it works out for you!

I would say for you to email her. I waited for 2 weeks for her to introduce herself. When I started getting too anxious I emailed her and she responded in like 5 min! That was Friday and we set up a phone call for Monday. So, so far I'm pleased.

Thanks for your insight!! Very true. How long after your wedding are you doing your AHR?

I was told that mine would be around $250. I don't know what's normal but $1100 seems VERY steep. Many people don't even pay that much for the dress itself. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a quality person to do it cheaper.

Meredith, you've already received so many wonderful suggestions but I would second the ladies motions to do a really nice dinner for those close to you that didn't make it to RM.  I think it would be really intimate and you all could experience ambiance at a nice restaurant that maybe quite a few of you have wanted to check out. Possibly you could do something like small plates and rent out the room of that nice restaurant you mentioned from like 2pm - 6pm and that way people wouldn't be expecting a full meal. I don't know how you feel about that but it is just a suggestion. My family might not go for it and would want to eat ( ;-) ), but I've attended something done tastefully and in a classy manner that was similar. Just don't stress yourself out, whatever you do!!!

And Amanda, I have not even began dress shopping yet, but that price for alterations seems awfully high! I hope you can find something alot cheaper!
