Should we register?

Recommended Posts

I've also seen wedding websites (can't remember exactly where of course) that let you have a wish list, so you can include things you can't exactly register for. One I saw actually had a flat screen TV listed.

That way maybe someone could give you a monetary gift and specify that you put it toward the canoe, or they could give a gift cert to that store.

I'm pretty sure MEC will allow you to do that but you should check - we were in the same boat - I finally got sick of people asking and registered at the Bay and Linens and Things - LNT is great cause you can add and remove stuff online..

My shower invites include the information and we have put it on our website. THat's that - enough people in my family know that if people are asking they can point them in the right direction!

I have no desire to register either and I don't want to have a shower... but I've been told that its not an option. So, now I have to register somewhere. Problem is that we are in the process of looking for a house to buy and already have some stuff from our apt... so I have no idea what the heck we'll need. So, I guess I'm just gonna register for some small stuff. Blah

We didn't register...only because we have been living together for 3 years and we have everything we could possible need.

I am not having a shower either. This is my second marriage and it just feels weird to me.

We are also not having bachelor/bachelorette parties. We were going to initally have the parties together but then I got pregnant and I couldn't have one....Jay was going to still have his but he is coming home from work right before we leave and we will have a bunch of stuff to do. So, he decided not to have one.

I know there will be people (like family members) who can't go to our wedding that will want to buy us something, but really we don't need anything. If they ask, I'll have to come up with something!

When I made our wedding website it was for those who couldn't make it. It was mostly pics and info on our wedding....mostly pics though. Well at the end we did post a small registry for those who wanted to get us gifts....and guess whathuh.gif we did :)....sorry I love presents :)

We initially were not going to register. But friends/family all wanted to throw us various parties - eventually you just learn to say "ok" and enjoy all of the fun!!! We honestly expected no gifts and few people attending the wedding. Our official guest list is at 42 now!!! Way more than expected - also, we have had an engagement party - thrown by sis-in-law-to-be, several bridal showers (one by ladies at work, one by mom and sister, one by girls in book club :), and a "wedding fiesta with a stock the bar theme" thrown by a group of friends that wanted to help us celebrate, but couldn't attend the wedding.

My point - even if you don't want it/don't need it/are uncomfortable with all of the attention/gifts, etc....people will want to do these nice/fun things for you! AND, when your friends get married, you will want to do the same for them (even if you can't attend their destination wedding wink.gif

SO, go ahead and register, I'd say do NOT include it with invites, instead list it on website and tell people who are throwing you a party (but know that EVERYONE will ask).

Target was a perfect place for us to register - Target is everywhere, and they have a HUGE variety of things and prices. Plus, you can do it online and edit it online.

  • 2 years later...

I really thought that we weren't going to register, but am starting to rethink it.  My fiance is Chinese and money is a pretty common gift from his relatives, but my family is starting to ask about gifts and every time I tell them no, they say that if I don't register, they will get us something that we may not want.  We will probably register at one or two places.

Ladies -

I plan on doing a honeymoon registry only as I don't need anything and we are having an At Home Party after the wedding instead of a At Home Reception, so I think the number of gifts will be considerably less than for a tradional wedding.

But I wanted to throw out an idea for those of you that are not aware:  if you return an item on your Bed, Bath, & Beyond registry items then you get CASH.  So you could register for items that you really don't have any need for and then return them for cash.  Just a thought.
