For those that do use religion as their guide in voting for Prop 8, I would like to know why we pick and choose which of God's words we want to live by. Why aren't all of the Ten Commandments law? Why not make adultery illegal? Why allow those to worship other Gods? Why not enforce the day of Sabbath and make it illegal to work on Sundays?

I know this seems a little extreme, but I think making it a law that marriage is only between a man and woman is very extreme. That's the only point I'm hoping to make. If you use God's words as the reason for why it's right to enforce laws that forbid gay marriage, then I just want to know why we can pick and choose which of God's words we live by.

I couldn't have said it better myself!!!! It urkes me to no end when people use religious reasons for decisions in government. I was under the impression that the essence of this country was the separation of Church and State!!!!huh.gifhuh.gif??

wow this is terrible! this really upsets me that people feel like they should be allowed to make such a decision that hurts so many lives like this! It will be interesting to see when some of the people that voted against this have children and if they are homosexual and hopefully then these selfish people will realise the happiness they have deprived amazing people of!

First off, I want to say thank you to those of you that are keeping this a respectful discussion. While I may disagree with some on here, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and as long as we all agree to respect those opinions, we can keep this thread going!

I think most of you know how I feel on the issue. First off, who am I to say what people can/can't do in the privacy of their own home?! And personally, with a gay sister and gay mother who are in committed relationships (10+ years), it's hard for me to see them want so bad to make their relationships "legal" (to recieve the benefits that I do), but they can't because somehow their love isn't good enough. Believe what you want to believe, but don't force those beliefs on me!

I do have to say that I hope in our lifetime we can see this change. Did you hear the part in Obama's speech talking about the 106 yr old woman and the change she had witnessed. That's crazy to wrap your brain around.

I couldn't help thinking "wow, in your grandparent's life time they have seen it go from being illegal to sit next to a black man on a bus to having him become your president." That's a huge accomplishment. I hope that our generation will be able to raise children that have their hearts filled with love and acceptance and they can make a difference in the future.

I was thinking the same thing! i just watched obama's speech and it did make me feel hopeful about the changes we will see in our lifetime. prop 8 is a setback, but the fight is not over.

thanks for bringing me to tears at work rach :) this statement really hit home to me, just everything that happened last night made me so emotional to think how it will impact my step-kids futures (my only kids ever, for that matter). they are just barely beginning to understand how the world works, and because of their father and i they are becoming very accepting, responsible little future-adults.

i am saddened to think that when they hear that cali. passed prop 8 that it might plant a negative seed in their little forming minds about the whole subject. NO, they don't learn about marriage (gay or otherwise) in school, but YES they do learn about the LAW from their family and friends and people they are supposed to look up to. if the law in california and elsewhere says to my kids that its not "right", i shudder to think what other things they may "decide" about whats right and wrong in the world. i am going to sit down with them tonight and have a discussion about it.
