Need Desperate Career Advice :(

if i were in your shoes, i would flat out tell him that i'm interviewing. don't specifically say that you have an interview on such and such day at whatever time, but at least put the bug in his head so it's not such a shock when you give your two weeks. also, tell him that if he advertises for someone new, you'll help train the newbie.
i'm sure you already know this, but after each interview, send a thank you card. handwritten is nice, but an email is ok too. just a reminder, as my sil recently went on interviews and never sent thank yous...and subsequently, wasn't offered any jobs - whether there's a direct correlation, idk, but not worth finding out the hard way!

If he asks, be straightforward. That's my only issue - if you don't ask clearly, you won't get a clear answer. I don't think it sounds as though he really understands what you want. I think it sounds like you presented yourself to him as someone who needs a bit of extra money, not either a huge raise or a whole new position.

 

Since he's not willing, if he asks, I'd be straightforward and say: I'm applying for other jobs because I feel as though I've got to take some new opportunities and expand my horizons. But I'd be happy to train my replacement and I want to stay in touch." Or whatever (if you want to on a personal level stay in touch).

 

I think it's great that you're moving on. It sounds like it was high time!
