We had our first meeting with the travel agent today, and because we are planning a Jan 2010 wedding in Mexico- we won't be able to get a date/resort locked in until March 2009. BUT I really want to get STDs out to let our guests know what the plans are and to give them some time to start saving some cash.

I am considering sending out STDs with a "tentative" date & location... is that a total oxymoron? I'm thinking they'll appreciate the notice in time to actually start putting away pennies even though it's not set in stone yet.

Then as soon as we are confirmed I thought we could send out formal invites with directions on where, when, and how to book.

What do you ladies think? Is it totally tacky to send out save the dates with no date?

Your resort might be able to secure a date for you once you decide where to have it. You won't be able to get rates yet but your travel agent should have an idea. Otherwise, people would probably rather know the time of year and start saving than wait for details. Good luck!

maybe call it an enagement announcement? You could always start up a wedding website now & send something out with your website address. Then on the website you could state your projected goal of Jan 2010.

How recently did you get engaged? If it was fairly recently you could make a postcard with some pictures from the day or just a picture of you two. Then on the back write something about your projected plans. Something like "we are so excited to announce our engagement.....we are planning a jan 2010 wedding in xxx...we will send out more info...."

What I did for ours (b/c we still don't have a date or resort chosen yet) is send out STD with January 2009, Dominican Republic.

And I started a website and a facebook group event (I know, I'm a dork) and send everyone updates that way.

B/c really the point of an STD is to let everyone know that you're engaged and when & where the potential wedding will be.

Hope that helps and have fun with the planning,

Sorcha

I like really this idea, esp. since the wedding is in 2010.

When I sent out our STD's we didn't have a set date yet either. Actually, we knew where we wanted to go, but it wasn't set in stone, so we put that we were going to the Dominican in Nov 2008. We also had our wedding website on it so everyone could check that for details as they happened.

Townie Princess - I also have a facebook group and event page set up, so I guess we are dorks together! LOL

When we were planning our wedding in DF, we sent out "save the date" cards but without an exact destination (although we did have a date) - so I don't think it would be strange at all to announce your engagment (congrats, btw!!) while letting people know you are planning a Jan 2010 wedding in Mexico. :)
