Location, Location... Cabo or Cancun??

I have been to Cancun and I love it. I have never been to Cabo (even though I am getting married there) but I can tell you that both places are beautiful. Cancun has gorgeous beaches and the water is so nice and you really feel the Mexican culture there. There is also great nightlife. Cabo is more touristy and more expensive. You can't swim in a lot of beaches and it is desert weather. However, Cancun goes through hurrican season which I just did not want to risk. Cabo would be much closer to you if travel is something you were considering. For me the decision came down to my shallow friends: A lot of people from New York go to Cancun and Acapulco for spring break so if I would have had a wedding in Cancun my friends would have abused me b/c they would have pictured wet t-shirt contests and loud house music. Clearly that is stupid b/c there is so much to do in Cancun that does not involve tequila soaked orgies. But my friends are stupid and ignorant and they base everything on what they see on TV or read in celebrity magazines. B/c a lot of celebrities go to cabo and they see the rich Laguna Beach kids going to cabo, they want to go to cabo. Not that I'm complaining b/c I also want to go but I'm just showing you how dumb my decision making process was.

Another thing to think about it the Riviera Maya. It is a distinctly different type of area from Cancun. More secluded, depending on where you go. More romantic. I love both areas, but for different reasons.

Cancun has everything packed into one long strip of beach, whereas the RM is spread out over 120 miles of beaches. Playa Del Carmen is active, crowded and busy, but most other areas are sleepy. An area like Akumal or Xpu Ha is about as relaxed as you can get

I have never been to Cancun but FI has. When I was looking for a resort I didn't want anything big or touristy (mega-chain). Cabo seemed to fit the bill and had a certain heir of sophistication. Cancun just makes me think of Spring Break and American Fast food chains. Keep in mind that I've never been there however so I could be completely wrong.

Being in SF, Cabo still shouldn't be terribly expensive. We're in Chicago and guests are at 1000 for Thur. - Sun./Mon. which isn't bad for AI. If we had selected Cancun that 1000 would get them probably 5-7 days.

What really helped me decided was the wealth of information about my desired areas. If it appeared that I could plan everything via web then I was good. Good luck!
