I read this book earlier this year. I hope I can join in. It was difficult for me to connect to the time and place...but I had to to enjoy this book. I really cant image particular circumstances where keeping a secret that pertains to life is a good thing. I come from a family of wierdos who keep the truth of biological fathers from each other. For example, my cousin has no idea that her "father" is not her real father but most everyone else knows hes not. I really want to tell her but its not my place. I also have family that has "passed"...for those that dont know - they look like a White person and on their DL and to "certain" people they are White. They in fact lead a double life but being on the "Black" side of the family, we all know.. and frankly think its stupid...

Good points BarefootBride and it's crazy how far people go with that stuff. I think lying about big stuff like that is always bad and comes back to bite you in the butt. You reminded me of this story:

One of my best friend's "little sister" is actually her niece. My friend's big sister got pregnant young and rather than suffer the scandal, her mom raised her as her own...like Bree on Desparate Housewives....lol

I've always known this and wanted my friend's little sis to know so bad that her "mom" is really her grandma and her "sister" is really her mom (confused yet? lol) but it wasn't my place to say it. Flash forward...my friend's little sis was told the truth a few years ago when she was 17 and almost immediately ran away. Prior to the truth she was a straight A, private school Athlete. Well that changed fast. She managed to graduate high school but has been living with a scumbag & doing drugs ever since, and refuses to talk to any of her family because they were all in on the lie. If she knew I knew all those years she would hate me too.

Moral is - these massive lies are dangerous! Tell the truth!!

My family has a dark secret (well at least we think it's dark- but it's certainly a secret.) My great grandmother died with a secret she wouldn't tell anyone. I don't how they all knew of the secret, but they did.

Anyways, my grandma suspects that the secret was that her uncle was really her father. The uncle and dad were twins and my great grandma dated the uncle first then broke up with him and then dated my greatgrandpa. (I know this is confusing.) Well the "uncle" always lived with my grandma. He never married and he lived his entire life by my grandma's side and helped her raise her children. My grandma always suspected he was really her dad but she has no proof. Unfortunately, her mother (my great grandmother) died with a big secret on her lips and refused to tell anyone the truth.

Dang, Rachel that is a serious dark secret.

One of my cousins was adopted at birth by my aunt whose sister had the baby. She never knew that her aunt was really her mom and her mom really her aunt. BUT we all knew, it was so crazy. Eventually the truth came out and she didn't freak, but WTF?

Ditto! This book brings up some hot topics. Based on the last few posts we know some secretive people who seem to be out of a book like this!!
