Pup question

I know there are a lot of dog lovers on this site and I'm hoping some of you have a few ideas on this...

 

My 7th month old pup had surgery on her shoulders for OCD (dead cartilage, not obsessive/compulsive disorder and she has to have extremely limited movement, but she's a puppy and likes to play and the only way to keep her down is to sedate her... I hate to do that to her since it makes her so doped up and out of it...any ideas of ways she can entertain herself with limited movement...I give her bones and toys, but that only lasts for a short time...

My suggestion is to crate her, or keep a lead on her attached to you at all times. This will prevent her from running around.

my 2 1/2 year old had knee surgery in early march. She tore a ligament. She also had to be super limited on movement...She is hyper and We have a second dog, 20 lbs bigger who likes to play with her and jump on her (see my signature - Daisy is the one who had surgery). We actually asked the Dr about sedating her and they wouldn't (said if she looses her balance she'll end up doing more damage).

 

We are lucky that Daisy is crate trained, so we just say "go to your room" and she goes in the crate and sits there happily for her treat.

 

My suggestion would be crate her if you have one and be really careful with sedating her!

when my hyper dog got fixed i had to crate him to keep him from running around the room and jumping on and off the couch.

 

Does she have a kong?

she does have a kong and we have been crating her, but she get's a bit nuts when she's in the crate for long periods of time...I'm trying to think of ways to keep her busy since her attention span is limited...

Maybe put the crate near a window so she can watch the birds?

 

This is going to sound werid...Put the dog wisperer on or any other kind of nature show with animals.

 

My two will usually watch soooo intentley, it's kinda funny and scarey

Unfortunately I was going to suggest the crate too, you said she goes nuts when she is in there too long, what does she do to go nuts? Put a treat in the kong or some peanut butter, keep her occupied.

I was going to suggest the kong as well. I have two doggies and they usually get tired of their kong if it doesn't have a treat inside but the minute I put a new treat they sit on the floor and play with it for hours. One of my dogs is a Jack Russell so she is super hyper and that's how I get her to calm down. I use the hard treats for the kongs....they look kinda like cookies and it takes them a while to get the treat out.
