1. I gave Karla (the WC for Coba) a CD with about 6 songs to be played while guests were seated and this wasn't a problem at all. We arrived late to the ceremony so I have no idea if they played other music or just looped mine a few times...I asked a few guests and nobody seemed to notice!

We are almost 99% sure that we are picking this resort for April 2011.

 

Do you recommend starting at the beginning of this thread and reading all the way through or is some of the info outdated?

 

I'm new to this website so I'm finding it a bit tough to navigate around.  Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I think this thread goes all the way back to 2008 so some of it might be a bit outdated...but by all means, if you have the time, read the whole thing! My observation with this resort is that they can be pretty inconsistent in what they tell brides, rules seem to change daily. My best advice is to pretend that you only know what your WC tells you and if you see something on this thread that you'd rather have than mention it. I asked very few questions and everything worked out perfectly!

Hey! I just found this thread and wish I had found it sooner since I am getting married in just over 2 months, November 18th at the Akumal. There's alot of useful information on here! I was just curious if anyone can give me any more information on the beachside reception at the Akumal? I hadn't even thought of doing a reception and was just going to do the dinner, since the coordinator hadn't mentioned this to me at all. Does anyone know rough costs and what is included etc? Or is it sort of you tell them what you would like and then they give you a cost based on all of that. Any information I'd really appreciate! Thanks!

Hi Kim, this site is fantastic isn't it, I don't know what I would've done without it!!

 

I am having a poolside reception at Tulum.  Basically you can either hire a DJ or take your Ipod, then on top of that you pay per head for them to set up a bar area & for you to have personal waiters.  I am paying $8 per head for special cocktails which includes, beer, wine, margheritas & soft drinks.  I am not having the resort DJ I am having DJ Bijan who is charging me $300 for 2.5 hours. 

 

So total price is dependant on how many guests you have going with you $8 per adult & half that for children.

Welcome Kim!

I got married at the Akumal side and had the private poolside reception.  At the time I paid $35 per person for the meal and drinks.  It was awesome.  I also hired the DJ for $150 an hour and it was definitely worth it in my mind. 

But the pool side reception in general, AMAZING.  Worth EVERY single penny and then some.  it was so awesome to eat and dance under the stars.

I wasn't going to have the poolside reception but now I am leaning towards it.  The only thing is that we will only have 20 - 25 of us and I just wasn't sure that we would need something like this.  I was thinking of just having everyone go to one of the lobby bars for drinks and some dancing and then heading to the Hacienda.  For those with small weddings, did you find that the added cost for the reception was worth it?  I really do think that I would miss having a first dance and some speeches.   Thanks for any input that anyone can provide!

Thanks for all of the info! Ya I just got the prices from the resort and am trying to figure out if it is something we want and if it's really necessary. We are only going to have 18-26 guests as well so if we were all to go to one of the bars it wouldn't be that bad. Just thought it would have more of a wedding special feel to have the reception so I am still currently waying the pros and cons. We have two options(either the poolside or the Coba Room). I'm thinking the poolside would be nice but not sure if there is any cover if it rains at all so I am just currently waiting for a response.

 

Does anyone have any input on what the bars are like at the Akumal? What exactly is the Hacienda? Is it a club more for younger people or is it a place for everyone including parents?

I had 35 guests, two of which were babies.  And it was totally worth it!!  Loved it!

 

Bars are all different depending on which one you go to.  My cocktail hour was in the lobby bar and that was nice, they moved around the table and chairs for me so we could have a little privacy.  The rain location for akumal is a lovely bar with open air possibilities and a live band. 

The hacienda is a large shopping center.  It's got shops around the outside and a Corona bar and a sports bar.  And then they have live music out in the courtyard.  It's pretty cool.  And then later the disco opens. 

 

Is it for young only, definitely not.

I would definitely recommend the poolside reception! Even with a smaller group it would be great to have your own private party. And it's really not that much more money considering you just pay per head to have the private bar set up and a DJ if you want.

 

The Hacienda is definitely fun for all ages. Like Trisha said, there's live music and latin dancing in the courtyard and tons of tables to sit and watch the action. We had our whole group in the disco after our reception was over and everyone had a blast!
