I just automatically put both names since it was from both of us and it was coming back to our house. I don't think the tradition matters so much as his feelings. If it isn't too major to add his name I would out of respect and to please your FI...they usually don't have much input so let him have this one

also, if you don't want to include the different last names you don't need to. I often write return labels with just our first names (and the address obviously)

Thanks for all the advice. He seems to have calmed down about it but I am still going to look into the labels.
