Why did you choose to have a Destination Wedding rather than a traditional one?

Recommended Posts

This is my second wedding, I already have done the "big one" .This time around it is all about "US".

We are both very busy people and want to combine our wedding with our honeymoon without any distractions ;-)

I really like beach weddings. Growing up I thought I would have the Cathedral wedding and reception at the country club, but that isn't really us as a couple. My FI has major problems with organized religion so the church was not an option for him.

We both have family scattered all over the country, so people would still have to travel and we would be dealing with hotels, rental cars, etc. anyway. This way we can all spend some time together and actually get to visit with our guests.

Even though it will be a DW I'm still having my big white dress, bridesmaids, etc.

I truly believe that a DW was the best decision (compromise) for us.

i have been a bridesmaid nine times. the whole production of a traditional wedding has never been appealing to me, and it always seemed like at the end of the day the brides never really felt like they enjoyed or relaxed at all during their weddings and receptions. so many people have said to me, "if we could do it over again, i would run away and get married somewhere. it would have been so much better." so we are just taking their advice and running with it! planning a DW has not been stressful at all, i never wanted a ton of people invited in the first place and the nice part about having it in Mexico is it gives you an excuse to not invite many people!

I had to check to see if I wrote this. I have also been a BM 9 times & have the exact same feelings & experiences. About 1 month before the wedding, the bride always says she wishes she just eloped. I'm less than 3 months away from my wedding & I'm having a blast planning. There have been a few stressful moments (mostly with booking flights, etc.) but over all it's been fun!!! The things I'd hear my friends complaining about doing for their wedding just didn't appeal to me at all. So instead of meeting with florists, caterers, etc. I'm googling pictures of Mayan ruins & places to snorkel (that's what I've been doing tonight). I am so happy we decided to do a DW!

I am originally from Mexico and had friends and family there that would attend our wedding.

So instead of coming to the US where we live, we chose a nice location in Mexico.

I mean, where else can you get excellent Mexican food and maricahis?!

this was both Everton's and my second wedding and we had both done the big traditional weddings the first time around. This time we knew we wanted us and our children and nothing else mattered. We decided spending 20 thousand on a great 2 week vacation for us and our kids with a smaller intimate wedding was what we preferred our money to be spent on. I also knew how little time I actually got to spend with my friends and family the first time around and I wanted to enjoy everyone who attended and spend quality time with them. I also knew that Everton and I would have more quality time together. There is nothing like getting up swimming most of the day with your fh, and then getting married. The night of the wedding we were not tired, and therefore we enjoyed our first nite as h and w, instead of the "oh god i am exhausted let's just do it so we can get some sleep" scenario of my first wedding, lol. Even with the stress of a dw i really don't think it is more stressful then a regular wedding, and the bonus is the stress comes in the months leading up to your dw and then it's usually right into vacation mode when you arrive, where as at a at home wedding the stress usualy lasts well into the day of your wedding, just the opinion of someone who has done both:)

Years before we were engaged we discussed getting married at Sandals, and when we actually got engaged our decision was a no-brainer for a few reasons:

1. My extended family lives halfway across the country, and my grandparents are unable to travel.

2. Even though it's costing us nearly $10K, we're getting a lot for our money - wedding of our dreams AND an awesome honeymoon rolled into one!

3. We get to share our special day in paradise with those closest to us.

4. All the kids in our respective immediate families are grown and it's difficult to plan family vacations - our DW was the perfect excuse for everyone to get away together!

I'm loving the planning of a DW. I can only imagine how many other things I would have on my plate if I'd had one locally.

For us a destination wedding was actually ALOT cheaper than having it in our hometown and less stress. I figure I'd rather spend the money on our rings something that we're going to wear everyday for the rest of our lives. Plus we both love coastal Mexico, the weather is always great and the people are so nice.
