Anyone "Jumping the Broom"??

Recommended Posts

We have so far only figured out that we will be breaking the glass (FI is Jewish). Jumping the broom would be a great way to honor my heritage as well. Thanks - and thank you for posting the pictures.

Whew! Been a while for an update in this thread.

I got my broom custom made and it's BEAUTIFUL! I'm going to try to post a pic. I figure I may do the make and take at Michael's so that I'm not running with the damn thing back and forth trying to figure out what I need or wanting to add something I don't have at home. Just easier all 'round.

Here's my broom undecorated!

I figure I may wind some wide ivory ribbon around the grooves in the handle, then attach the greenery/flowers around the base of the bristles.

Oh wow, I like that broom! Where did you get it? I plan on jumping the broom as well but I have no clue about decorating it. You're supposed to put it in your house and frame it (so I've heard) so I don't want it to look tacky. I would love to see pics of your broom once decorated.

We are also jumping the broom and we considering incorporating an idea that we read on African American wedding invitation and program wording for a Broom Jumping Cere....

A popular custom is to pass out colorful ribbons to guests and then have each guest tie their ribbon on the wedding broom before it is jumped as a symbol of their wish for the couple. You can even pass out markers with the ribbon and have guests actually write their blessing on the ribbon if you like. The broom can be passed around during the ceremony and then collected by a designated person. An easier method is to have guests decorate the broom between the ceremony and the reception and then jump the broom at the reception.

We are "jumping the broom" too and neither myself or my fiance are african american. Jumping the broom also has roots in Celtic and gypsy cultures. My grandmother used to say, "don't get have a fancy wedding, just jump the broom" so in honour of her that is what we are going to do.

We are focusing on the sweeping away our individual pasts to start a new life as one.
