We only have about 12 guests with no reception.  We are going to go out as a group afterward.  So we chose to upgrade to the master suite and get the free wedding because it was basically like getting a free upgrade.  It was the same price to do that as 4 nights with one of the cheapest packages.  Plus I thought it was RIDICULOUS to have to pay $600 for a minister when they know you have to have one.  In the free package, the minister was included.  We are keeping it simple!

Thanks for your help- just want to clarify one thing...

The Classic Wedding states that it is for the couple and up to 15 Real Guests. Does that mean that the 15 guests are included in the price (and all you have to pay is the $15 per person to upgrade to the private reception if you want)- then each additional guest after 15 will be $5 for the champagne toast and $30 for the Private reception?

I'm sure the awesome spreadsheet will answer my question but I'm getting antsy!

we have a much smaller group, so I didn't consider the Luxury wedding, but don't be afraid to whip out the Excel and crunch the numbers per package to see what fits best.

yes, 15 guests are included in the price, so with you (bride and groom), the pricing is for 17 people. you don't start paying until you have more than that. that was the package I chose before switching my reception to Wicky's.

one catch on the private reception deal - I think there's a 20 person minimum, so regardless how many people you have, you have to pay the upcharge for 20. I think it worked out to something like $300.

Hi Amanda

To get to know the resort, you have to do some research by yourself to know inside out.

I recommend to check the followings:

1. the resort's official website: http://www.realresorts.com/The-Royal-Playa-Carmen/

------------> this will answer your questions about the size, look and activities

2. trip advisor's website: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150812-d530483-Reviews-The_Royal_Playa_del_Carmen-Playa_del_Carmen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html

----------------> you can check photos without photoshopping, updated by travelers. helps you the good & bad by reading the reviews

3. read over this tread from page 1. This will take you forever, but it may be the shortest way to find answers that will pop up in the future anyway.

I'm also planning to do excursions with the guests. In my previous experiences, the airline who sold the vacation package to you (ie., delta, aircanada, sunquest, air transat, etc ) will tell you the time (usually the next morning) to meet the representative of their own company at the lounge area. The rep will explain all the excursions and the prices. I will contact the airline once I choose the vacation package months before the departure, so  that I can reserve the excursion for everyone. If you search for 'excursions' in the forum, you will find some reliable websites that allows you to purchase excursions online. Good luck.

there are a million activities at the resort, and they have a desk where you can book excursions that depart from the resort. the most popular thing people on the forum have done is booked a catamaran cruise that includes unlimited alcohol and dinner. because of playa's location, you really can do anything, from snorkeling to ziplining to swimming in cenotes to ATVs and horseback riding. you name it, they've got it. however, if your guests are only around 3 - 4 days, they may not want to leave the resort because that's just enough time to relax. also, the royal is centrally located both on the beach and within two blocks of 5th avenue (playa's main commercial street), so there's plenty of shopping and nightlife within walking distance.

the resort has around 500 rooms, I believe. I like it because it's smaller than those mega-resorts on the mayan riviera. the staff really get to know you, and you have a lot of interaction with them. at the resort there's yoga, pilates, bike tours, kayaking, aerobics, etc etc. and they have entertainment poolside nearly the entire day. the resort will probably be full (e.g. all the chairs around the pool filled) but not overly-packed (e.g. no waiting or making reservations for dinner).

like the other ladies have said, look around both on here and on trip advisor. do searches. try to find out as much as you can, and read back through this forum to see what kinds of questions others have asked (a majority are wedding-specific, so google/tripadvisor will have more on excursions). good luck!

If you can wait until you get there, there are tons of vendors and deals you can make on 5th Avenue. We stayed at the Royal last April- went shopping on 5th Ave for the cheapest snorkeling in Cozumel and found a tourist group who was offering it for $20 a person! We are thinking about doing that for some of our guests (the only problem is there is only room for 10-12 people on each boat). Aside from that, there are tons of other options when you walk down 5th Avenue, and they are generally MUCH cheaper than the excursions offered by the resort.
