At home civil ceremony

We too are going to be married at the JP RIGHT before we leave for Mexico. We are going to go with just a few family members to witness and we aren't telling anyone else. We just figured with the extra money it costs, run around, blood tests, and the fact that pretty much the only that will be there that is related to me will be my dad and that isn't for the whole time and if something happened to me, then my husband (legally by the time we are in Cancun) would be able to sign for me on things or make decisions. Then it would be done and when we did the religious ceremony on the beach, we would actually BE married and not have to do it when we came back and we could celebrate as the actual married couple we are at the point. Just for us, it seems like the easiest way to go, but I understand not wanting to do it beforehand too because we had the same exact worries as other people I have read about.

And I also forgot that it takes a couple months before you actually get your marriage license back from Mexico, from what I heard and it is more of a trust issue with us, we want to know that it is truly legal and we are legally married for sure

I think we are going to legally marry before going to Mexico too. I don't plan on telling anyone though. It just seems easier and much cheaper!

One question though for those further along in planning.....What is your coordinator doing to make it look "official" to guests?

Are they providing a certificate to sign or having you do your thumb prints? I think I want something like that for a keep sake.

We legally married just hours before we left on our trip. We married in a church with just our children and Everton's brother who wasn't able to make the trip. We told no one else and it did not take away from our wedding in the DR. I thought of doing it after our DR wedding, but I really wanted to be legally married on our wedding vacation. Both of my weddings were beautiful. My siggy is actually at the legal ceremony here at home.

I am not sure what they are doing to make it look official. Most of the people going know that we are going to do it the day before we leave for Cancun, but maybe I will talk to the wedding coordinator about that.....I still haven't heard from her yet and it has been a week!

I had 2 questions I was hoping someone could answer/clarify for me concerning a civil ceremony. I am having a hard time getting in contact with our local clerks office to get any anwers.

 

1) Do I need to make an appointment to have the civil ceremony or do I just walk in and fill out an application?

 

2) Do I have to provide my own witnesses? If so, how many?

And for those that have been married in the DR through a symbolic ceremony.. Is there a certificate for you to sign? I emailed the coordinator of the resort, but no response yet.

We are getting married here first. I would prefer to do it in my pastor's office even though its just to cover the legal aspects and sort of give a high five to the Big G.O.D. beforehand:)

 

I've always disliked the aspect of having to stop this nice, romantic ceremony to sign papers and stick our thumbs in ink anyway. So I knew from the start I didn't want to go that route.

Got married in Vegas last month. We made it kinda funny so it didn't take away from our excitement. We went through a drive thru chapel in a cab and the cabbie was our witness. It's a funny story and we were so happy we saved money doing it that way.

 

I'm very excited for the "real" wedding too!

Number one I don't do needles... Number two WHAT IF the tests came back with bad new. We wouldn't be able to get married and it would be horrible. I feel safer (even though I know we don't have anything) just covering my bases here in the states. Not to mention we are going to start the Citizen process for my Fiance and it would be easier if everything were done in the states.
