Okay so I have the worst luck w/ my hair...

I usually use box color during the winter and then get blonde highlights w/ dark color throughout in the summer.

It seems that whenever I get my professional highlights done I don't like it and I don't know if it's just me not knowing exactly what I want or what but the blonde always seems to be brassy and not light enough.

Now this last place i went to, I really liked the girl and she got the highlights small and natural like I wanted ect...but I still have the same color problem. She says it's because I had box dye on it and she doesn't know what's in the box and that it's having trouble pulling it up? Is this right? Or can she put a different level on it or leave it on longer or whathuh.gif It's so frustrating...because I want the blonde highlights for the wedding in 3 months and I want to make sure by then she can get it right??

HELP!

yes, that is true- to an extent. It is so much harder to make hair blonde after it has been red, it will pull red even when it's lightened (brassiness)

I susally am PRO Redken, but... for reddish hair (I pull gold) I like to use Color Graphics by Matrix, they have a special pigment additive that counter acts the red/gold look. Maybe they only use one type of highlighting in the salon, and they don't have a color lightening system with this. Anything that is blue pigmented or green will counteract your orange/brassy hair. Does that make sense? it is kinda hard to explain (think of the color wheel)

If I lived closer, Michelle, I 'd do your hair for you!

Thanks Shelley....crap at this point with I spend on crappy coloring I should just fly out to you! :)

But see this is where my confusion is...why don't these hairstylists know this?? Granted, maybe the first time they need to get used to my hair and I never like it so I never go back to the same person...but this time I will go back to her because I liked everything else...but she only get's 2 trys!

She said that we can work towards making it lighter....so hopefully that is right too.

yeah, she really should know. Maybe if she doesn't know anything about the product that I talked about, maybe she can tone your hair after she lightens it. Just make sure that you stress to her that you want it lighter. You can always tone it down a little if it is too light.

Feel free to ask me if you have any more questions. Do you know by chance of what products they use there?

In the winter/fall I keep my hair dark and usually tend to put highlights in when the spring/summer comes. My stylist is my best friend and she always knows what I want but still has a hard time getting it the blonde that I want. She always feels bad because we are best friends and she wants to make me happy. It usually takes about 2-3 times to get it to the blonde that I want. She works in an upscale salon where they get tons of training and advice and yet still has a difficult time and all of the girls there say it is because I die my hair dark for months and then try and change it.

Hopefully next time she can get it how you want it. Good luck! Just really stress to her what you want.

I am naturally mouse brown sad.gif but I always tend to box color a reddish brown. Whenever I get highlights, it ALWAYS pulls light blonde, not yellow, not orange, but not all the way white. The colorists are always surprised that I don't get brassy, even when I tell them ahead of time what will happen. They are always like "Whoa we better rinse you now!" when they check a packet. I think each persons individual hair type must also adds to the equation.

sorry girls...i am late......well i think miss shelly said it perfect...find out what color line they are using...i am only redken but we have a couple of lighting creams (bleach) we use ..it is so hard with box color DO NOT USE IT...it makes your hair a mess i know it is cheaper but its so bad it builds up in your hair then you end up paying anyways....my advice to you is find a girl you trust and stay...they can tone your highlights once they bring them up sometmes you may not get past the brassiness although it can take a couple of times...i always say please be aptient with me i will get you there but you must do what i say (good products and no box color).. ask any time about hair i will be honest.. good luck sweetie and be patient..
