You can absolutely do that. A good printer won't struggle with the fold.

 

Alternatively, just get regular card stock, print one side with a picture of your choice and the other side with your note. Then get a paper trimmer/cutter with a scoring blade (makes the nice, sharp fold) and you're all set.

I was just thinking, I know that at work we have "thank you" cards and I used to just put them in the bypass tray of the printer and print a message on them.

 

I think it will be fine, like someone else said, just make sure they're not glossy on the inside.

 

And yes, you'll want to either buy a decent laser printer, or see if someone has one, I know my dad's was really pricey, but he also has a business and bought it for that purpose.

 

We used to have a decent one in my other office and I was able to print some things on that as well.
