It didn't look like there was a thread started for this yet when I searched the forums.

Any other January 2012 brides out there?

We're booked for January 12, 2012 at the Barcelo Maya Palace in the Riviera Maya.  So excited!

I wish it was this year already.

Hi girls!!  I'm planning my wedding for January 2012 as well!  I haven't picked a location yet, but should hear from the TA today about possibilities!!!!  How did you guys pick destinations?  I think it's the hardest part trying to decide on a location and resort!  Any advice please let me know!  cheesy.gif

Thanks!!

Well picking our location was the hardest.  We knew we wanted a destination wedding.  We sat down and wrote a list of what is the most important to us, such as having family and friends there, therefore it needed to be affordable.  We went through three locations before finally deciding on Jamaica.  We then went to our TA and she recommended some places to look at and from there we found our resort and then picked our date with the wedding coordinator!  Good luck and welcome to this thread!

Hi,

I'm also getting married in January 2012 but I'm having a hard time finding the perfect resort. We decided on a destination wedding for financial reasons but after we announced our engagement, our families (a minimun of 40 people) told us that they wanted to come along. Now, it seems that our wedding reception will be costly since you have to pay for each person at the reception. I'm finding it hard to budget properly. Any tips ?

Hi and welcome!  The first thing we did was sit down and decided who we wanted to come ( we are only having immediate family, like parents, brothers, sisters, and a few close friends to keep it cost friendly).  After we did that we made a budget and put it in order of what is important to us, for example, we wanted a decent photographer but could care less about a cake.  From there we found a resort whose wedding packages fit into our budget (some offer free weddings, ect).  Do you have any idea about where you want to get married?

Hey ladies!! Thanks for starting this thread! I just reserved my date with Palace Resorts. I'm officially getting married 1-6-12 at Playacar Palace Resort in Riviera Maya! Picking the location, let alone the resort, was definitely the hardest part. Like another poster, my FI and I sat down and made a list of non-negotiables and went from there (i.e. Beach wedding, complimentary wedding package, ability to actually LEAVE the resort, and affordability for ourselves and our guests). Once we did that and settled on Riviera Maya, then I looked for reviews and threads here and on TripAdvisor. I'm a HUGE fan of TripAdvisor, especially the photos section - resorts' website photos always look more like paintings than real pictures. The brides on here are absolutely wonderful - there's a few on here and on TripAdvisor that when I e-mailed them to get their input on that resort, actually friended me on Facebook so that I could comb through their photo albums. The women here are super generous with their help :) Good luck and happy planning!!

Excellent advice. This is what we did too.  We had been to Mexico before and absolutely loved it, so we knew we wanted to go there.  I picked about 6 resorts then really intensively researched them (in Huatulco and Mayan Riviera).  Once I narrowed it down to 4 or 5, I got quotes from my travel agent.  Then we narrowed it down more.  In the end it was a choice between two for me, but I went with a larger resort - while if it was just us I would have probabably chosen a smaller resort, if we end up having 30 people with us - I don't want them to be on top of each other all week, because I know this is their vacation for the year too.

The internet is a wonderful resource, how did people do this before the internet? You tube was a surprising place that had lots of good video/pictures of resorts. Some of the bigger resorts have their own fanpage (Someone made an unofficial Barcelo Maya Forum because they loved it so much, it has a lot of people on it).  Trip advisor was lovely.  It was interesting to read alot of comments, and see what people complained about.  "It rained the whole time we were there"  "There were lizards on our balconey"  Things like that are often the complaints.  Maybe you shouldn't go to the tropical jungle in the rainy season if you don't like that stuff  >.<

So just google your heart out.
