Pros: Small, Intimate, Ultimate Pampering, Beautiful Suites
Cons: ?

The Zoetry is incredible. We were picked up in a Lincoln Navigator as soon as we arrived, poured a glass of champagne and offered a music menu! Upon arrival we were met at the entrance of the resort by someone who knew our names. They gave us a short tour of the resort, and had us to our rooms where our luggage was waiting within 15 minutes. There really was no check-in, just being handed a key and asked what else they could do for us. It was the nicest, most seamless entry into a hotel I've ever experiences.

When you enter the lobby, you can see the ocean directly. From here, you can see almost all the facilities. The pool is in the middle, surrounded by the three restaurants and the spa. The staff works very hard to learn your name and meet your every need. Dining is an event here. Plan to spend 45 minutes to two hours at every meal. The food is incredible. There are some very unique and gourmet choices, some suited to different palates, but I always asked for the servers’ recommendations and was rarely disappointed.

As for communication before hand, they were easy to get in touch with and both thorough and helpful in their response. We just went for our honeymoon, but judging from our experience, it would be a great place to plan an event. It is very upscale, though, so it would be best suited to a more sophisticated crowd.

We stayed in the Aman suite on the third floor. There are no elevators, but the stairs were never an issue. The location was ideal, only one building away from the main area, no suites on either side and above the trees. Our view was incredible, almost like a cruise ship on the water, but a huge amount of space. The furnishings were exotic and opulent, yet cozy. We loved sitting on the patio. The bathtub isn’t all that functional, but the shower felt like it was outdoors. You can see lots of pictures here:

I just can’t say enough how great the suite was and how private it felt with the jungle on one side, the ocean on the other, and craning our neck to see anyone else’s patio from ours. We couldn’t get over the included laundry service, either.

Our only complaint was the dirty beach. They seemed to be cleaning it all the time, but it washed up as soon as they had an area cleared. They really need a better machine.

The activities were fantastic! We did the wine tasting, tequila tasting and cooking classes. We learned so much at all of them, and really enjoyed seeing the kitchen and how meticulously everything was prepared and cleaned. We learned how to make fantastic desserts, too! We also went scuba diving; Bob was great and showed us a nurse shark and a moray eel. It was only the two of us, so it was a very fun and intimate dive, my first, and we resurfaced in the rain. We did the Temezcal steam room, a very interesting experience. Think of it as going to a show, and it will be fun.

The spa was nice, and we enjoyed the salt water pool. You have to search out and ask for many of the things on the web site, but they are available if you want them.

We also met with Sheldon who does the Wills System, and my husband did some of the breathing sessions. They got a little new-agey after the first one, but the breathing has seemed to help him with his stress, which he really struggles with. I’m not sure I would have done it, otherwise.

There are three and a half restaurants: Kaax is for all three meals and is very good. I tried all the authentic Mayan dishes, and they were excellent. I especially liked the lime soup. A harp played during breakfast, and we enjoyed sitting on the patio, although the iguanas will beg for food, which was quite alarming at first. Kaax has a trio at night, and they are excellent. El Chiringuita is the Grill and serves lunch and dinner. It is their food that is served at the pool. We mainly had their appetizer, which was fantastic, and opted for Sikil’s sushi most other pool lunches. Sikil is an outside sushi bar that serves sushi in the afternoon.Lastly, La Canoa is incredible. Eat there whenever you have a chance. We actually lost track of the courses. Everything is outstanding – they have house sorbets in every imaginable flavor, including goat cheese, which is served with watermelon; it was surprisingly good! They had a duo every night, and it was consistently wonderful every time we ate there.

Wildlife is everywhere at the Zoetry. There are more iguanas than guests, and they beg sun themselves and join in the putting and tennis games. Peacocks roam the property, an alligator was spotted by many fellow guests, and the macaws and other birds have huge cages and fill a lounge on property. The resort, pet, welcomes you with a “hello” or “hola” frequently. Altogether, it’s very charming and adds so much character.

If you’re looking for a party scene, this is not your resort. However, if you want a low key, ultra luxurious and extremely romantic resort, this fits the bill. You’ll see the same people regularly and can be as social or secluded as you desire. The pace is slow and relaxed. I can’t imagine a better, more enjoyable resort.
