Westin Palm Beach, Aruba
I stayed at the Westin for a week after my wedding (elsewhere on the island). Here are some of my thoughts...
Customer Service: From the moment we arrived, everyone who worked at the resort was extremely gracious and helpful. James, who checked us in, remembered us throughout the rest of our stay. It almost felt like he was our personal concierge! I also thought the names tags with "My passion is..." was a nice touch. It was a conversation starter on several occasions and made the staff seem more human and personable (not that they needed much help with that).
Room: Our room was wonderful. The bathroom was modern, clean, and spacious. The room was simple and tasteful and well organized. The balcony was my favorite part. The sliding glass door lets in tons of light. We were on the 13th floor, and the view was beautiful. We really enjoyed drinking wine on the balcony and leaving the sliding glass door open while we were in the room.
Outdoors: The pool is fine, OK. There's nothing wrong with it. But given the quality of the rest of the hotel, I would have expected more of the pool. The beach, like many on Aruba, is very nice: white, fine sand; clear turquoise water; palapas to provide shade.
Indoors: The spa at the resort is great. My husband and I had 3 treatments each throughout our 1 week stay there! The hot stone massage was both of our favorites. We only ate at the Terrace Cafe for lunch, but I heard very good things about Pago Pago and Blossom (restaurants in the resort). We just decided to explore other parts of the island instead of staying in the hotel.
Location: The Westin is the last resort along the Palm Beach strip. It's extremely close (maybe 1 or 2 blocks) from the start of the pedestrian strip malls with stores, restaurants, and bars. At night all the tourists stroll along this part of the street, making it fun and lively.
Rules: I mentioned "too many rules" in my cons. This is what I meant. We had some leftovers from our first lunch at the resort. We put them in our "refrigerator." The next day we found a note in our room that the device is not a refrigerator, but a heat extractor, which could be damaged from our personal items placed there. Additionally, the beverages that the resort placed in the heat extractor are all placed in precisely their own spot. The heat extractor senses when an item is removed. If it's not placed back in 20 seconds, you are charged for the item. I love efficiency and technology, but this kind of stressed me out. Also, there are rules around the palapas. It's first come, first serve, starting at 7 AM. You are only allowed 1 chair per person and 4 chairs per palapa. You can reserve palapas ahead of time for a fee: $30 for the 1st row, $25 for the second, and $20 for the third. If you reserve a palapa, you have to be present at it before 11 AM, or else it can be given away. If you leave it unattended for more than 40 minutes, it can be given away. Again, stressed me more than I would have liked on my honeymoon. However this rule-induced stress was minor and didn't really take away from the experience. But of course I would have preferred to not have to deal with the "rules" at all.
