  1. The store that I got my engagement ring from from quoted me $500 to custom make one that will sit flush with a row of channel set diamonds to match the band on the ering.
  2. Bump for visibility... I'm trying to get ideas on where to look for inexpensive bridesmaid dresses. I've checked out J Crew (not cheap!!!), target, macys, and a few others mentioned in here, but still looking for ideas. I live in Canada but will be doing a shopping trip in Michigan in the fall.
  3. I was thinking maybe I could do a second trip with just her or her and my sister if she wanted. And I will definitely have to tell her in advance that I'm not ready to purchase anything yet. Thanks for the advice.
  4. Thanks, all. Maybe I'll have the reception, but go with the iPod and speaker setup instead of a live DJ and just ask people for song requests on the wedding website?
  5. @@Beccamadge They haven't released the packages for 2015 yet and Akumal is in the middle of a changeover to being a luxury resort as of this November, which is probably part of the delay. I myself am waiting to book for Coba to get married at the Akumal Hammock site, but my travel agent said they wouldn't release the rates until October of this year.
  6. A Dress shop in Saskatoon has gone out of business recently and there is currently an online auction for the last dresses and accessories in stock. It ends on Aug 22nd and dresses that retail for $1200 have current bids of like $30. You can find it by checking out mcdougallbay.com then clicking on Events and scrolling to the auction on Aug 22nd for Scarlett Bridal Boutique.
  7. I'm not sure how to handle this, but I don't want to go dress shopping with my mother. I live thousands of km away, so normally it wouldn't be a problem, but my sister just had a baby and I have planned a trip home to meet him. Since it will be the only time I will be in the same town as my bridesmaids I was planning to take them shopping for their dresses and possibly look at some myself if we have time. My mother got wind of this and wants to go shopping now. I love my mother, but I don't want to take her wedding dress shopping. She has terrible taste in clothing and terrible financial sense and I don't want her derailing my plans or trying to talk me into something out of my price range (We're having a very low key wedding, I want to keep my dress under $500) My plans are to look with my bridesmaids a little bit and if that doesn't work, go shopping with my future sister in law when I get home. I'm just not sure what to tell my mother. She will probably be very upset and pout if I just tell her I don't want to go.
  8. We're having a fairly small wedding, it will be 24-30 people including 3 kids. We're going to have a beach ceremony and semi-private dinner in a resort restaurant, but I'm wondering whether it make sense to have a poolside reception. Our guests will all be immediate family, and our two best friends. Maybe it's just that I've never had a DJ and open bar when hanging out with my immediate family that makes it sounds weird to me?
  9. Yeah, I'm going to take my bridesmaids to David's Bridal when I'm down to visit in November (hopefully by then the wedding will actually be booked!)
  10. Nice. Once you go shopping, can you let me know if you find any stores I should definitely check out? I don't live in Regina so I'm not familiar with the stores down there.
  11. Tripcentral isn't looking too promising, about $400 more than Mexico on average.
  12. I've talked to a couple travel agents about the Mexico plan, I just want to figure out if DR is feasible before I start looking into that. We're looking at Nov 2015, I'm just trying to get a rough idea of how prices compare to Mexico. Cuba is a no go because we have family that live in the states.
  13. Yeah, she was talking about that explosion at a resort a few years back, but buildings explode in North America all the time. The grade school I went to had blown up years before I went there. A department store blew up in my hometown due to a gas leak. It's not like these things are limited to Mexico. It's like saying that Oklahoma isn't safe because someone planted a bomb in front of a federal building once!
  14. Hello, I'm currently planning a wedding in Mexico basically just because it's cheap. I'm not particularly attached to the country. Has anyone found affordable rates for the DR, and if so what resort/city? Thanks!
  15. I had a little bit of this just this past weekend. We went down to visit my fiance's family. My sister in law mentioned that her girls love to snorkel when they go to the Bahamas, so I said "so they'd love it if there was a trip to Mexico next year?" to which she went on a little rant about how she doesn't ever want to take her kids to Mexico and it's dangerous and everyone gets sick and then a whole tangent about how the resort security isn't going to stop the cartels if they want to come in... really out there stuff. Then she casually asks if we have chosen a place to get married. "uh... Mexico?". Oops. She seems to have come to terms with it though, I heard her talking to her husband about talking to their doctor when they got home to find out about medication to prevent traveller's diarrhea.
  16. I'd suggest using the vacation pricing grid on tripcentral.ca to get a rough idea of what is available out of Regina and what the rough prices are. It only shows about 6 months ahead, but it's a good jumping off point.
  17. We're at five years now, so we'll be at six when the wedding comes around. Both his married siblings were at the 7 year mark when they tied the knot.
  18. I'm gonna have the whole wedding planned before I get enough posts to see the attachments in the official post for the resort I want. With my luck I'll hate everything.
  19. @@TinkerSofi is it LaurieLee? She sent off a request for a group rate two weeks ago and I haven't heard a peep from her since.
  20. haha are you me? I'm in the same place. I am leaning towards the Bahia Principe Coba for November 2015, but the TAs I've talked to say rates won't come out until October. I'm not stuck on Mexico, but I figure it will be the easiest and cheapest for my guests.
  21. Please let me know if anyone finds a bridal store in Regina or Saskatoon that has a good selection of lightweight wedding dresses that aren't too expensive!
  22. I haven't been able to get rates for the Bahia Principe Coba yet from the two travel agents I contacted, and the websites for Westjet, Sunwing and Air Canada all say that you can only go a year out for rates.
  23. @@tehopper I'm planning for Nov 2015 as well. I talked to a couple travel agents and Told them what resort I had in mind, but it looks like rates won't be available until October. When I went to Mexico two years ago we had a direct flight to Cancun out of Saskatoon, so I'm hoping Regina has direct flights as well.
