  1. Hello BDW! As you've probably learned by now, when you say the word "wedding" the cost for items and services tends to go up. This is generally just part of the process and we learn to suck it up, but every now and then you come across a charge while dealing with a vendor that warrants a minor vent. I just got back from my wedding at Secrets St. James in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and everything was amazing and just how I wanted it. But during the process I had to laugh when I asked the florist (Tai Flora) how much it would cost for 10 shepherd's hooks to hold pomanders along the aisle and they told me it was $25/hook. $250 for some hooks I'd be borrowing for 20 minutes when I was already spending over $2,000 on flowers?! No thank you. I ordered some from eBay and spray painted them silver for about $40 for all 10. What service or item(s) were you surprised to hear the cost of? Did you just pay it, get crafty and DIY something, or just let that wish list item go altogether? Let's hear it! Here's a pic of my shepherd's hooks on the cheap in action.
  2. You're invited to the Real Wedding of... Priyanka & Cliff Wedding Details Bride Priyanka (BDW user mizpriya) Groom Cliff Wedding Date April 23, 2013 Location Gran Caribe Real Cancun, Mexico Hometown Milton, Canada Pictures from Priyanka & Cliff's destination wedding (click to enlarge): Why did you choose to have a destination wedding? There were several reasons why we decided to do a destination wedding. Cost was the major factor. Our priority was not to spend a fortune on a beautiful wedding because we wanted to have a house and a home to live in before doing so. We bought our house before getting married and spending thousands of dollars on one day was not in our budget. Another reason we decided to go this route was because we saw how laid back weddings were for other couples who did destination weddings. I had been to 3 and Cliff had been to two of our friends. It was really inexpensive for them. Lastly, we have friends and family all over the world- people were coming from India, Singapore, Dubai, USA and all over Canada. It didn’t make sense to just have one day for the wedding to spend time with all these people who came from all over the map just for us. We wanted to ensure we were able to spend time with all of our guests…for some of us it was a reunion because we hadn’t seen each other in years. This was the perfect setting for all of us to connect and spend quality time by the beach just chilling and relaxing. Why did you choose your location? When we were researching resorts and venues for our wedding, there were a few things that were really important to us, and we really stressed this with our travel agent who was helping us find the perfect location. Number one was it had to be under $1500 (for flight and hotel stay) for those of us traveling from Canada since the majority of people were coming from here. For those who were coming from out of town, the cost was pretty decent for them as well- and the fact that so many people came from out of Canada is a true testament to that! Secondly, we wanted a small, intimate resort. We both had been to destination weddings where the resort was so big, it was hard to find people. And since our priority was to spend quality time with everyone, the smaller resorts were key to us. We also hated walking everywhere just to get somewhere! Lastly, we are big foodies, so good food was important to us. Gran Caribe Real Cancun was the ideal location as it met all of our requirements down to a T! What were your wedding colors and/or theme? We selected red and yellow for our colours. We were making our wedding website and we had a picked a theme from the templates we had and they had the colours red and yellow. I knew I wanted red as one of the colours- being half Indian, it is a colour you would see traditionally. And when we saw the template, we were just like “Oh, that’s a nice combination!” So it really was by fluke that we made that selection, but it worked out very nicely when we saw the pictures. It was quite unique as we had never seen anyone do that before. We also wanted to keep it very relaxed with the décor. We just played up with the beachy scenery and added seashells and burlap all over the place. Every wedding is special in its own right. What made your wedding unique? Our wedding was special because of all the small details that we put into it. We wanted to do unique things that had a lot of meaning for both of us. From the beginning stages of the wedding planning, we wanted to add our own touches that were not your cookie-cutter wedding details. We made our boarding pass invitations together as a couple. I designed it and personalized it according to our personalities. We wanted everything to reflect the love we shared with each other and spread it with the group. We wrote our own vows and even edited the script that the officiant read to suit our personalities. Our wedding was definitely not your traditional, run of the mill kind of wedding. I had a Man of Honor rather than a Maid of Honor. None of the groomsmen had boutonnières - just my Man of Honour. My bridesmaids had no bouquets, instead I made them red clutches to hold that had a flower on it and was personalized with their names on the inside. My Man of Honor was the ring bearer as well and he held the rings in a Mexican painted pottery that was filled with sand. We had no DJ. My best friend sang our first dance song. We had no mother-son, father-daughter dances. It was very simple and perfect for us. Even for the bouquet and garter toss…we had everyone get up to participate instead of just the single guys and girls. We wanted to have fun and make the day be a celebration of our love. AND we even had fire dancers at the wedding! No one in my group has ever had that so we thought we were pretty cool and special to be the first couple to do that for their wedding! One of the major challenges of putting together a destination wedding is finding and working with your ideal vendors from afar. What wedding vendors did you use to put together this spectacular wedding? 3. The summer wedding season is in full swing, and while you're likely here at BDW for help planning your own wedding, you may also find yourself as a guest at someone else's wedding this season. If you have no idea what to wear or just like any excuse to shop, look no further than here! We've put together five complete outfits for a handful of common wedding locales and themes. 1. Beach Wedding For a beach wedding you'll want to look put together, but still casual. A maxi dress in a fun, bright color is a perfect option. Pair it with some dressy flat sandals (perfect for the beach!), a simple woven clutch, sunglasses, and a bright lip. 1. Victoria's Secret Knife Pleat Maxi Dress ($98) 2. 80s Purple Sunglasses ($12) 3. Penny Arcade Larger Than Life Lip Gloss in Raspberry ($26) 4. H&M Straw Clutch ($12.95) 5. Vince Camuto "Harissa" Sandals ($97.95) 2. Cruise Wedding For a cruise wedding, we like this strapless dress from Gap. The stripes are a subtle nod to the nautical setting, and we also found some adorable rope tie earrings that pair well with the theme too. Finish the look with coordinating navy blue wedges, pale lips, and a soft wrap if it gets chilly on deck. 1. Gap Sateen Strapless Dress ($54.99) 2. Madewell Market Tassel Scarf ($38.50) 3. Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Petal Soft Pink ($24) 4. Mod Cloth It's A-bowed Time Earrings ($9.99) 5. Claudia by Jean-Michel Cazabat Wedges ($195) 3. Cocktail/Evening Wedding At an evening wedding, navy is a nice dressed-up option that doesn't feel as heavy as black. This dress below, from Lulu's, has a fun sparkle detail at the waist and an unexpected peekaboo back that still manages to be classy. For nails, consider doing something different with your manicure and the sparkle polish we recommend. Check out our earlier article on how to add sparkle to a wedding for some fun ideas/inspiration for nails. 1. Lulu's Navy Blue Beaded Dress ($80) 2. Xavier Geometric Sterling Silver Drop Earrings ($79.95) 3. Banana Republic Kaylan Clutch ($89.50) 4. Illamasqua Nail Polish in Snap ($17) 5. Nine West "Glittering" Shoes ($89) 4. Garden Wedding If you're going to be outdoors in a park or garden setting, we like the idea of mimicking the surroundings in a playful way by incorporating a soft floral pattern in your dress. Since this dress and necklace are in bright turquoise colors, we paired it with a bright orange nail for a fun and unexpected contrast. 1. Blue Juice Speed of Light Bustier Dress ($125) 2. Zara Chain, Cord and Stone Necklace ($29.90) 3. Sephora Nail Polish in Hot & Spicy Orange ($5) 4. Zara Ankle Strap Sandals ($79.90) 5. Vintage Wedding Vintage Weddings are more popular than ever, and with the success of Downton Abbey and, more recently, The Great Gatsby, gorgeous vintage fashions are now easily found in major retailers. If you snag an invite to a wedding with this theme, consider splurging on this dress (appropriately named Gatsby) from Anthropologie. And how gorgeous are the art deco heels?! For makeup, nothing says vintage glam more than a deep red lip. 1. Anthropologie Gatsby Paillettes Dress ($328) 2. Forever 21 Pearlescent bead and charm necklace ($6.80) 3. Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick in Dark Rosey Red ($5) 4. Boutique 9 Platform Evening Sandals ($112) 5. Bhldn Aigrette Clutch ($350) Did we miss any? Or do you have your own suggestions? Let us know by sharing in the comments!
  4. 1. Yes, for the most part. The hubby was in charge of music so he put together a spreadsheet. Music is a big deal to him, so when the DJ commented that we made great picks he was all proud of himself. Haha. 2. At cocktail hour we had the steel drum band. We basically missed this part since we were taking pics, but everyone said they were awesome. 3. We did spring for the dance floor. As for if it's worth it or not, totally your preference-- if you're going to do first dances and want to wear cute heels or shoes, you might want to spring for it. If you're going barefoot, dancing in the sand is fine I'm sure. But I will say that I really liked the setup with the dance floor-- they had it in the center and then all the tables around it on the beach. 4. I say just go to the disco after. That's what we did and we gave everyone glow stick bracelets and necklaces. 5. They use the same chairs for the ceremony and reception. We upgraded to the chivari chairs in silver, and I thought they were pretty on their own so I didn't bring sashes or any chair decorations (other than the fans with programs, which were only out during the ceremony). I bought the napkins online (forget where) but for 40 purple napkins it was pretty affordable, and then I packed them, along with all my other crap, in the plastic storage bins that I taped up really well and checked as luggage. I ended up leaving all 3 bins behind-- didn't want to deal with getting them back to the states, and they were only like $9 each so I didn't feel too guilty.
  5. I used all of the Secrets vendors (except hair and makeup) and I was happy with everything! But you should feel free to look around and if you find great prices (that will still be great after you pay the outside vendors and day passes fee) then go for it!! I think the setup fee ranges from $50-$300. I don't know what they base this on since I feel like I had a lot of stuff to set up, but I was happy it was so cheap too!
  6. Yep, cupcakes were from the hotel! And those last few to-dos will come together!
  7. Thank you! I brought everything with me and checked extra luggage. We flew American, so we were allowed 1 checked bag each, 1 carry on, and 1 personal item. We both packed all of our shoes and clothes into our carry ons (a feat, but doable since my clothes were sundresses and bathing suits) and then we each had a garment bag as our "personal item." His had his suit, mine had my dress. They let me hang my dress and were super nice to us on the flights. We checked 2 big plastic bins (taped these up really well) for free and then paid $40 to check the third. All in all, pretty easy. Everything got there and I think out of everything only one bowl was broken, but I had a backup so it was fine. Oh I also had my parents check one huge suitcase of stuff. That got there fine as well.
  8. Yes, will do! Sorry that I have been slacking on updating this thread but I haven't forgotten! As for the bag delivery, I was going to have them do it, but in the end I just delivered bags to guests myself. I had an idea of when people were arriving thanks to a list from our travel agent, so I just made it a point to call rooms shortly after arrival to confirm they were there, then I walked over to present it to them. In the end I liked this because I got to welcome guests soon after they arrived. The bonfire is from 7-9pm. It was a lot of fun! I mentioned on another thread, but just be aware that in addition to the open bar and DJ they also set up a table with ingredients for s'mores. I loved this and had planned to bring them for guests anyway, but that made it much easier. Had I known they included that, I wouldn't have schlepped all that extra stuff with me on the plane! Oh well. Overall everything was perfect! There are very few things I would change-- one is I would have eaten more wedding cupcakes! I was surprised by how good the wedding cake was, and with the craziness of the wedding we hardly ate anything. Wish I had one of those right now. Haha. More later but happy planning and let me know if there are any other questions I can answer for you!!
  9. Hi ladies! I got married at Secrets in April and I brought TONS of stuff down. Three big plastic bins worth. My husband thought I was crazy, and I started to think I'd done too much, but I'm sure the wedding coordinators have seen worse! They only charged me a $50 setup fee to set it all up, and they go over how you want things to look in your meeting with the WC before the wedding. We went through each item I'd brought with me piece by piece, taking it out of the bins, and I described how I wanted it to look (I brought some pics too) and they took notes. I was happy with how it all looked so I'm sure you'll be pleased too! Also, if you're going to do a welcome bonfire you should know that in addition to the open bar and DJ, they provide all the ingredients for s'mores! I didn't know that and had brought a bunch of s'more fixings with me. Wish I'd saved that packing space! Good luck all, can't wait to see how your weddings turn out!
  10. Are you working with a travel agent? I don't know the Costa Rica area very well but a travel agent might help and be able to offer some great suggestions! Try reaching out to Wright Travel (they are run by the creator/owner of BDW and I used them for my own wedding, which was amazing!) You can find them here: http://www.wrighttravelagency.com/ https://www.facebook.com/WrightTravelAgency And no matter what you do, good luck!!
  11. Well, it's finally happened. The store where you can buy everything (and where you go in for a roll of paper towels and come out 1 hour later and $200 poorer) now has a budget wedding dress collection! All dresses are under $130! Amazing. Perfect for a bride on a budget, or for a trash the dress or reception dress. They also have bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. A couple of dresses are below, visit target.com for the full collection. (Go to the women's section, then dresses, and you can filter by wedding.) Happy shopping!
