Best Destination Wedding and City Harvest
How You Can Help New York's Hungry
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the residents of New York need our help more than ever. Best Destination Wedding has partnered with City Harvest to provide our members with information on how they can help during this time.
Now serving New York City for 30 years, City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city's hungry men, women, and children. This year,City Harvest will collect 42 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to some 600 community food programs throughout New York City by a fleet of trucks and bikes. City Harvest helps feed the more than one million New Yorkers that face hunger each year.
City Harvest also addresses hunger’s underlying causes by supporting affordable access to nutritious food in low-income communities, educating individuals, families, and communities in the prevention of diet-related diseases, channeling a greater amount of local farm food into high-need areas, and enhancing the ability of our agency partners to feed hungry men, women, and children.
More than 1 million New Yorkers will rely on emergency food this year, including more than 1 in 5 children who live in families that don’t always know where their next meal will come from. City Harvest expects this demand to be even greater this year as many of the people who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy are pushed to rely on emergency food while they rebuild their lives. City Harvest is on the road day and night, working hard to provide support to those affected by Hurricane Sandy while continuing regular food rescue work throughout the five boroughs.
Donors can feel secure knowing that their gift will be put to immediate use helping to provide food for New Yorkers in need. Ninety-one cents out of every dollar donated directly supports City Harvest’s programs fighting hunger in New York City. City Harvest’s cost-effective food rescue model and outstanding management have been recognized by a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, and the organization was honored with a silver prize at the 2011 New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards. Most recently, The New York Times selected City Harvest as a recipient of its Neediest Cases Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
