JBean's Planning Journal - PIC HEAVY - Lots of DIY

Awesome stuff, great job! -
Hey ladies! Can I get some help from those that have already been through the process? I've recieved all of the "final" documents and I feel COMPLETELY lost. I'm not sure if it's the language barrier or what. But, for instance choosing the BBQ menu for the palapa - how the heck does that work? She said " Please note that for groups bigger than 15 people, we need to work with a set menu (means the same option of soup/main course for the entire group)". Ok, so this is the list I was sent - I see lots of meat choices, and then some random Entree things...Is meat not an entree? Do We choose one meat OR on entree? How is cold shrimps and entire entree? I sure hope someone can help me with this because I feel like a total dummy, but it just is not clear to me Help!!!

For you ladies that have already gone through the process, what sort of things did they want you to start planning at the two month stage? I'm 6 weeks out and Yenizia has been very good at answering my q's so far with pricing and such. She told me last week to contact the wedding coordinator (at at different email address) to start making final choices, so I did, and now have not heard back. While I am trying my best to be patient since they're busy, part of me is also a bit nervous because it's officially "crunch" time. Do I need to stress or it is fine that they aren't getting back to me in a reasonable time frame?

Girls with the tipping questions: I haven't been to Mexico for two years, but I did get the feeling last time that they now prefer to have Pesos (four years ago when I was there it was all US!). Since the US economy flopped it's not as easy for things to be "just drop two zeros for the US price". From what I understand it's somewhat of a pain for them to exchange the currency anyway. What we found was good (and got us excellent service) was to give our bartender $50 pesos ($5) every few trips to the bar (when you're in a big group it's really not that big a thing everyone just take their turn tipping), just make sure they see you give it to them! And at dinner we always tip about $50 pesos per person (Like $20 pesos at the lunch buffet as really they're just getting waters), they really appreciate it, and you'll notice the next time if you get the same server they'll go way above and beyond because most don't tip that well, if at all. The way I figure it, coming from Canada, our economy is not in the poops and we can definetely throw a little extra their way for enjoying their lovely country!!

It's a shell flipped upside down! So it sits nice & flat, I don't think it will sink -

Here's mine! I went the DIY route, a few gluegun burns in the process but I'm happy with it The one that plianab posted from Etsy was my inspiration, just couldn't see spending the $55 on it. -

My last convo with Yenezia, in case any of this is helpful to anyone else.... Since our booking comes with the DJ, are we able to use his sounds equipment during the reception to do our speeches? And will he be fine to play songs from our Ipod for the first dances (Bride & Groom, Mother/Daughter, etc)? If we wanted him to just play a fixed setlist would this be an issue? We would actually be quite happy just having the sound system with an Ipod plug-in for the whole night and no DJ if we were able to exchange this? Yes you can do all of this, the DJ should be there because you have it included maybe just checking that everything works good and you can put your ipod or bring all the music in a memory stick and the DJ take care of that…opt to you Is a projection screen available for doing a slideshow, and what would be the charge for that? Yes we have it and the price is $1,000.00 includes the projector (If we cannot exchange for sound system) As the DJ is only for three hours, are we able to rent just sounds equipment for when he is done (to play from our own Ipod), and what would be the charge? We can’t modify the package so the DJ is included but for the other hours you can rent the sound system for $450.00 With the menu for the Palapa that you provided, am I correct in assuming that we will choose just one selection beforehand from each area to be served (IE we choose one soup, one entrée etc), or do guests select on the day-of? You will select for them, For our centerpieces at the reception, we are planning to bring vases from home, and I would like to purchase flowers from the resort to make arrangements with (my mother and aunt are both florists so they would like to make the arrangements). Is it possible to buy loose flowers from the resort? I know we could go to a florist in Playa but I suspect it would be less expensive to purchase from you, correct? We would be interested in hydrangeas, alstomalieas, lisanthus and casablances. Any idea on what sort of costs that would entail? Yes maybe send me a picture of the centerpiece and how many are they goig to do and I can check the price, ok? Do we get to have the Tiffany Chairs since we have the Presidential package? Yes, the white ones How many people can sit at one table at the Palapa Tables? 8, maximum 9 people Are candles allowed in the palapa? yes If needed, am I able to ship a couple of boxes of supplies to you just before the wedding to hold on to for me? Do you have any suggestions of what brides typically do when bringing lots of decorations from home? To be honest Sarah, I don’t suggest to send anything, because sometimes on the customs service from the airport they keep all the stuff and you lose it or could open the box or arrive broken, so is much better if you bring it with you. The decoration depends on what you want?, which color are you going to use?, could be candles, stones, presents, candy’s, fans…or just buy it here and don’t come with boxes opt to you

Tired of Complaints and Feeling Guilty at the same time!
sgreen99 replied to carori's topic in Just venting or funnies
I too have found this to be an incredibly stressful experience, much more so than I think either of us ever expected (one, since we've been telling people since before we were even engaged that we WOULD be having a destination, it was just a matter of when; and two, we just made assumptions that immediate family (parents and siblings) was a given for attendance, no question, we would never miss someones' wedding.). We gave people exactly one years notice, to me this is more than enough time to plan and save for a seven day trip. It's been a real eye opener to hear the complaints and watch people who are very important to us back out one by one. It's been really emotionally taxing to say the least. I had big dreams of a mini family reunion and lots of time with family whom we never get to see (because everyone is so spread out and has to travel anyway, we thought this was a fantastic idea), it feels at every turn like someone else is giving us an excuse of why they can't come. I'm trying REALLY hard to focus on who DOES care about us and who is making the time and the sacrifice to be with us. It is very hard to try and stay positive and we are both feeling very defeated, there have been a lot of tears and a lot of hurt for both me and FI after talking to another family member who says they are not coming. It took everything I had last week not to call his mom and ream her a new one when she basically said her part time school that she is doing for fun might be too busy to come. It's just unbelievable. In the end, I know what is most important is that he and I are there to marry each other, and we are very lucky because we have amazing friends who are coming, it's just sad that lots of our family are not the same way, we really wanted to share the experience with them. But we have a very supportive network of friends who have become our family and we are blessed to have that. Our friends are the ones who can't stop talking about how excited they are for the trip and how much fun it will be for everyone to be together for a week, etc. So, I guess we'll just focus our efforts there since they are obviously the ones who care about us and are excited to share our happiness. A destination wedding is an eye-opener to say the least. -
Dealing with a very difficult FMIL....She is pretty bat sh*t crazy to begin with (refused to speak to me for the first 2 1/2 years of our relationship because we "lived in sin" - yeah, one of those....). Now that we are engaged (which my FI explained was always the plan, he just didn't want to rush it), magically she can speak to me, weird. She started to come around a little bit and even asked me a couple of times how the planning was going (this is huge, trust me). Now, she's telling my FI that she doesn't know if she can make it BECAUSE SHE CAN'T MISS ONE WEEK OF HER CORRESPONDANCE PROGRAM. She had never worked a day in her life and decided after getting divorced that she wants to go back to school (on FI's father's dime of course). Really?!? He oldest son is getting married and she seems like she couldn't care less. This wedding has just made me want to shake some people. What don't people understand about your son/daughter/sibling getting married? A year in advance is plenty of time for people to sort their stuff out, it just boggles my mind. FI has been more relaxed about it (the most important thing is that he and I are there, obv), but today is finally starting to lose it too as key people keep busting out these excuses, it's really unbelievable. Having a destination wedding certainly tells you who your true friends are, and what family members really have your best interests at heart.
