  1. You cannot upgrade from Barcelo packages to outdoor venues, as far as I've been told and heard from others. If you were having an Air Transat package that is different, it's not a Barcelo package so the rules aren't the same. As for outside photographers, the 2011 and 2012 packages explaining the wedding packages offered also stated no outside photographers and they allowed them for the fee/rooms booked.
  2. I chose the bass and keyboard as my selection as I wanted canon in D played and felt this was a great choice for that. Apparently the day of the wedding something happened to the guitar player so we had keyboard and violin, I have heard a short snippet of it from a video and I love how it sounds! I have heard positive things about all the love music!
  3. With expenses you just need to decide what is most important for you and go with those things! For the other things that may not mean as much to you, if you still want them try to do them the cheapest way possible...I am not super artsy/crafty but I made a whole lot of stuff for our wedding and it sure cuts down on costs! Or if you are on the fence about something perhaps you should drop it if it doesn't fit in the budget.
  4. I don't think I ever posted on here my actual veil, it was from Etsy seller BellaBridalVeils and cost me just $53 including shipping. It has crystals scattered throughout and was a shimmery material like my dress! It was fingertip length because I didn't want it to interfere with the ruffles. Here you can also see the belt I had on my dress that did a whole lot of grabbing of my veil!
  5. I have heard ladies talk about gluing or sewing on little teeny painted fishing weights. I didn't do anything with mine and told my maid of honour to tuck it into the back of my dress IF it blew around...we lucked out with absolutely no wind so I didn't have to worry! Something I never thought of with my veil was that if you have a belt (Like I did) and its got bling that is a little bit rough with clasps where your bead or bling is your veil may attach itself to your belt. Mine did that quite a lot!!
  6. It is all preference, like so many things with the whole wedding planning! I wouldn't be too concerned about the premium or as you referred to it as preferred vip, if people want premium alcohol and room service they can upgrade themselves...most of our guests stayed at the Barcelo Colonial and that meant no premium for them and no room service but no one cared anyway, they could still access food and TONS of liquor options (great choices too, not only crappy brands) whenever they wanted and were fine with that. I think us (Bride and Groom) and two other people were the only ones who ever accessed room service and that was only because we could and it was fun, the room service list you can order off of isn't extensive either, late night I would order plain spaghetti with butter and parmesan because I was a vegetarian and it was my only available option. Here is a link that explains what club premium is http://www.barcelo.com/BarceloHotels/en_GB/hotels/Mexico/Riviera-Maya/hotel-barcelo-maya-beach/club-premium.aspx Our wedding was in November as well. I had to provide our confirmation number that our trip was booked (at least the bride and grooms trip has to be confirmed) and then once that was done they slowly planned everything with me. I just looked back in my email and I forwarded on my confirmed travel info to them and the initial email that started my planning was Feb 28th. It wasn't a fast process but everything WILL get planned and as far as my wedding was concerned, everything turned out more than we imagined it would! I am happy to share and help with whatever I can, so if you have any questions just ask! Happy Planning!
  7. Have you tried online? I found teeny starfish and shells online and had them shipped to me. They'll probably be too small for you as they went in our wedding favor bottles. I just googled 'starfish Canada' and then made sure any site that came up in my search I double checked the shipping policy and if they shipped to Canada. Good luck!
  8. We booked our photographer far in advance, months before the planner ever asked about it and just knew we would have to pay a fee or for a stay and that was fine with us.
  9. Make sure to ask him for his most recent prices, we used him November of 2012 but I believe his prices were going up slightly. As for that being said, yes we would have paid much more for him as we loved his work and working with him that much! As you can see by my response to kimmystew above I did love working with him and his assistant! Every person who was there at our wedding or has seen our pictures since we have been back have had nothing but major compliments on his work on our photos! He was fantastic to work with and we had our pictures all on dvd's SO quick! it's a different resort but in the fine print for the Barcelo it says they do not allow outside vendors but of course once you ask around they do, but for a fee! lol! My hubby and I both agree that what we paid for photos was well worth it and even more!
  10. All depends on your budget really, I contacted some photographers that were $15,000 for large packages and others are under $5000. We paid just under $3000 for our photographer (Juan Navarro in Mexico) for 6 hours of coverage on the wedding day and a trash the dress the next day. We got 4 DVDs of our pictures and have all rights to reproduce. There are almost 2000 edited pictures for us to love! We also went with a separate videographer and that was an additional $2500 for 5 hours of coverage. These things were VERY important to us and having a friend or family member take pictures and record us just wasn't the same for us so this is where we splurged the most!
  11. Check out this Barcelo thread, it says palace but brides on there are for all the Barcelo Maya resorts it seems and there is TONS of info http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/t/21746/barcelo-maya-palace-brides/3570#post_1872966
  12. Sorry for the long delay in responding, instead of responding to certain questions i thought I'd just write a bit and some questions will be covered regarding time line, jaguars, etc. So yes you can decide on the day of the wedding if you want to extend the reception. We knew we wanted to extend for 2 hours just so we had time to do some dances and stuff, once we realized how much fun everyone was having and were given a 15 minute warning we extended it one more hour. Our timeline was this: 3:30 reception at Gazebo (symbolic) Group pictures then bride and groom pics (we wanted a bunch of good pictures and to not be rushed so we left ourselves enough time) everyone went to the bar and had drinks, the time passed by quickly but we had lots of time for excellent pics! 5:30 reception began with our intro then into first dance, we then quickly cut the cake (to get pics and video of it) then did speeches (again so photo and videographers could catch them) and dinner was served immediately after. (We had about 20 of us, not a ton of young party people, but some older party people! Lol) There was time to party for a quite a while after eating. My opinion would be to skip on the VIP at the jaguars club, the place, even at its busiest isn't so busy that you can't have your own little area to hang out. I believe it opened at 10:30 or 11:00 but can't be 100% sure, although it is surely around then
  13. We had the strawberry with a 3 hour reception as well, we added on 2 hours because we assumed dinner and speeches would take most of the 3 hours up. When the time came (5 hours had passed) our group was having such a blast we decided to extend it by one more hour and then the disco would be open if people still wanted to party...which they did! So together we had 3 hours included, paid for another 3 and then went to the disco after that. All depends on what your group is like, we didn't want to go and sit in the lobby like so many other groups we'd seen do during our stay, it didn't appear to be all that fun to us so we just stayed on the beach dancing our hearts out! We thought it was 100% worth the money we spent! The cost is about $12 per person (over 18) per hour. I can't speak for the DJ as we did an iPod. Happy Planning!
  14. Nope, we didn't speak with the officiant at all before, just told Victoria that we wanted a reading done and she set it up with him I guess. You would tell her the same if you were doing a sand ceremony or something else extra. My husband said that the officiant spoke with him briefly right before I walked down the aisle when he asked if we'd been together long and little questions like that. He made my husband face him until I got close enough down the aisle (at the gazebo) and then he had him turn around to see me....talk about suspense! )
  15. Something I just noticed on Gilmana's review (fantastic review, by the way) regarding photographers. I am not sure if I put this on my review but a HUGE suggestion is to ignore and give no information to the Smile Market people who call you, they called our room a day or two before the wedding and were trying to ask all these questions about our wedding and when it was and where our photographer was staying and who it was. I told my husband to tell them nothing and he ended up hanging up on them and we never heard from them again.
  16. We did use him and thought he was great, spoke english very well and he was a happy guy... I can't say exactly what he said because it went by so fast and we don't have our video yet but I do know that he read parts of the Hands poem which I put below. We had actually asked my husbands mom to read the poem so when he read it we were like OH CRAP and she got the hint and never got up for her speech. And when the minister was done he said to us quietly "you have a speech" we just said no back and he moved on. He DID do the thing everyone talks about where he tells you to say something to your spouse - we just said "I love you" to one another as we knew this was coming and agreed to say something teensy and no big speeches. "These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future. These are the hands that will love you and cherish you through the years. These are the hands that will hold you in times of fear or grief, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes - tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. These are the hands that will hold your children in tender love, soothing them through illness and hurt, supporting and encouraging them along the way. These are the hands that will help you to hold your family as one. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And lastly, these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch." I do know he didn't say the children part because we aren't planning on having children and had axed that from the husband's moms speech and so I was relieved when he didn't say it either
  17. I didn't use the AT packages, as I had enough issues with booking my group with them to travel, so I can't comment in that part. As for sashes, maybe ask again about your color specifically, they didn't initially say they had purple and when I said my color was purple/teal she sent me a pic of what they had and I chose to use them. If you read all the reviews on here (there are lots of great ones on this thread, mine is in here as well) you'll get lots of great ideas. We brought decorations and many brides do! My links are a few posts back to my pictures and you can see my centrepieces I brought as well as other details. As for the reception, we did the strawberry and had a group of about 20 on the beach. We ended up extending our reception by an additional 3 hours on top of whats included in the package because the party was so great and everyone was having a blast! And of the 20 not even half of our party were all that young, many of ours were in their 50's (our parents and family friends). After that the club was open and we went there to party a little more. And for photos I hired Juan Navarro, and for video had PlayaWeddings. All together to book each company a room at the Beach resort we paid just under $600 for the two nights...MUCH cheaper than $1000 for having two outside vendors. Depends on what you want from your photographer, we decided that was the most important thing to spend our $$ on. Check out diff reviews for people on here and get quotes from them. Cheers!
  18. That's a fabulous price! I don't usually use 'boosters' but my dress had no bra built in as I didn't really need one, but I did want to have some more cleavage up higher than my dress was making it so I bought two sizes of microfibre pillow type thingies for the wedding day and they worked perfect! Stayed put in my dress without an issue and made everything look great! They do absorb sweat though and that is a bit gross at the end of the night but they can be washed and air dried.
  19. You have to put some kind of cover over it to iron it on, I used a pillowcase, and it worked well. No melting or anything. They are SO cute! I loved all my bling-ed out bride stuff!
  20. Sorry ladies, I am trying to find the business card I had for her so I can get her number to you! I'll pass it on as soon as I find it! Cheers!
  21. Oh and for the Just Married Bikini - it was a total DIY! I bought a $5 bathing suit bottom from walmart and then had purchased the rhinestones from an etsy seller and ironed them on myself. You can definitely get the iron on's anywhere else though, even walmart has them. We dazzled everything with them, bridal party tank tops, bathing suit bottoms, and even my white hoodie that I wore on the plane on the way down ) So fun!
  22. Thanks so much ladies! We were so 100% happy with all the decisions we made involving the wedding! Juan was fantastic to work with, I can't ask for even one more picture that I love from him...we have close to 2000!!!! We are still awaiting out video from Playawedding but the preview we saw was fantastic as well! I am so excited for all the brides/grooms who have upcoming weddings at the Barcelo! MrsNova - I am so excited for you that you also have Juan, he is awesome! I didn't ask or tell him anything really, I just wanted to go with whatever he caught and we got a ton of gorgeous shots! We did some with our group (he didn't post them) but they are more posed pictures with parents, each family, etc, and then the rest were just whatever he came up with. We did ask him to pull out his fish eye lens and he did that for us and captured some that way. He is fantastic at capturing important moments, for sure!!! We are picture people and agreed to do everything and anything... "climb that rock - SURE!" lol, all for pictures! It was so worth it to me! For the gift exchange, Juan hadn't done this before as far as I knew and it turned out fabulous, my mom had scouted out this location just down the hall from my room so it was quick to get to and looked great! For your questions Melissa2014 - The chair sashes and linens are all from the resort and came with the strawberry package. When we initially were sent colours purple was not in the list, so I asked and sure enough they had it and sent me a pic of the colour and we went with it. Everything else on the tables were ours...the purple light up centrepieces with an organza flower on top were my creation, I also brought the purple personalized napkins as well, but they folded their white napkins in a way that incorporated the purple napkins of mine and my menu cards as well. And yup I am in Calgary - I used to be at FMC as well, now I am at the new hospital that just opened in January!
  23.
