  1. Go with the fire dancers!!! Okay, I have never seen the performance in the DR, but I have spent a lot of time in Thailand, where they have loads of fire dancing on the islands... it's insanely cool! I'm definitely doing the show for the maximum amount of time. It's so cool!!
  2. Exactly!!! So much poorly done vignetting! A few times, I found a photographer that I thought was "decent" and got super excited that I finally found one! Then I would do my digging and find whole albums full of subpar photos... photos that even my FI said "no way!" to, and he's FAR less critical than me. There is no way I'm spending 1-2.5K on snapshots just so the photographer can get lucky for 2-3 shots and call it a day. There are 1 or 2 real photographers that do DR weddings, but their price range is much more expensive and we are struggling to figure out how to incorporate them.

  4. Here's a tip: try really digging for pictures before going with a photographer. I did A LOT of googling and unearthered posts from brides that shared their entire wedding albums vs. just seeing the few best shots the photographer is proud of. The real life version of some of the photographers quality of work was entirely disappointing. Many of the photos I found were nowhere near "professional" quality. Just snapshots with some post processing.. nothing I can't do on my own computer. After WEEKS of research, I still have not decided on a photographer in the DR because of this. I am an amateur photographer, so maybe I'm being more critical, but I don't want to pay ANY money if what I'm going to get back is point-and-shoot quality photos. My mother could take those for free!
  5. Hi Erin, I think Mayte is just slow at replying. Every e-mail I send takes weeks to get a reply. I'm not upset about it.. I know she's busy and with my wedding scheduled from 14 months from now, I figure I'm lower priority than someone who is getting married this spring. I'm currently waiting on some more info from her so that we can then get an invoice together, and get a deposit to her. From the rate of things.. I don't expect to be officially booked until March. lol. It IS a little frustrating but I try to remember how busy she is and that I know she will do an awesome job when the time comes. Also, thanks for reminding me about getting the judge! Does anybody know if he speaks English? Does that mean he will do the ceremony instead of the normal officiant?
  6. I am SO glad to see someone else went this route. My FI and I are planning on renting a couple of 3-6 bedroom villas for our budget-minded guests to stay in. I've looked into these, and many are less than $150 per night which can come to about $20 per guest/per night. Our friends and family are certainly not rich, and paying $500 for hotel rooms ON TOP of $500 or so for a flight would mean that many of our loved ones would not be able to attend. I plan on finding all the most affordable options and providing guests with many choices. This may make it harder to round everybody up for the wedding, but I think it will be worth it in the end.
  7. Hi ladies. I'm new to the board. We are getting married at the Jellyfish in March of 2013. Still have a lot of time to plan and am finding this board incredibly helpful!
  8. a year ago, if you would have asked me if photography would be the most expensive part of my budget, I would have laughed. However, since looking at website, after photographer website, I've realized that your photos are the one thing you will have forever to remind you of your special day. Currently, we're looking at spending close to 30-40% of our ENTIRE budget on photography and videography.
