  1. Hi Jay, congrats to you on your engagement and welcome to BDW! I'm not an expert on the UK's rules for packing and transporting items via air travel by any means. I would assume that you can bring along any paper products (paper lanterns, napkins, decorations, etc.), fabric or fake flowers. You can also check welcome or out-of-town bag items like travel size sunscreen, shawls, etc. I would be hesitant to bring any fragile items that far, but depending on how you pack them (in a carry on, or well protected in bubble wrap), it might be possible. International travel can be brutal on the checked bags! My suitcases always get banged up when I've been to Europe. I hauled quite a bit of stuff to Mexico for our wedding, and didn't have a problem with any of it. The most fragile stuff (our wedding favor/ornaments, my bouquet, starfish), I put in the carry on suitcase that my husband took on board. The rest of it was in our checked luggage. Happy planning!
  2. Hi Amanda! welcome to BDW. I can only imagine how dreamy a Hawaii wedding will be. Happy Planning!!
  3. Hi Diana, Congrats on your engagement!!! My DH's family and friends all flew to Cancun from NYC. Other than the fact that our wedding was right after Hurricane Sandy made a mess of things, they were able to get flights fairly easily. I think most of them came down on JetBlue. I would suggest pricing flights to the various destinations and see what makes the most sense for you & your guests. Also consider what type of resort & wedding you're looking for - all inclusive, resort-based wedding, off-site wedding, etc. The challenge with Key West is that everything is crazy expensive, and suppliers are somewhat limited. My DH's mother plans weddings for friends and family down there, and I've never heard anything but frustrations when she's dealing with vendors. I love, love Puerto Rico too. That was in our initial list of choices. There was only one, maybe two all inclusive resorts there, so we ruled it out pretty quickly (AI's were high on our priority list when we were choosing resorts). I like GC and the USVI too - but some of the same challenges as PR with the lack of all inclusive resorts (and I found GC to be pretty expensive when I've been there). Just some things to think about. The most important one is to narrow down what you & your FI want, and then plan from there. Good luck!
  4. Jolene is 100% right. You can make it as elaborate or as simple as you want, and either way it will be gorgeous. The first step is to figure out when, and then the where. Big picture "where" - Mexico, Jamaica, FL - where is your destination? Once you decide that you can narrow down the resorts. Reach out to Tammy and the BDW team for expert assistance in finding and booking your resorts. An experience travel agent can make this process sooooo much easier (and less stressful!) for you. You can contact Tammy here. I'd highly recommend attending some of the BDW Webinars the team is hosting with various resorts. It can give you ideas about what's available, and how it all works. Here's where you can find info on any upcoming webinars: Good luck and happy planning!
  5. I had nightmares and freak outs too. That's why I said it's normal (cuz yanno, I'm 100% normal!!! hahaha).
  6. Lindsey - totally normal girl. Take a deep breath! It will be fine. As Miriam said, the onsite coordinators are pros, and it will all look pulled together and JUST FINE. are you getting married at Gazebo 55? if so, I tag you in the pics I have that show the aisle on FB. our minister spoke english just fine. I won't say I was super impressed with him - I honestly didn't even listen to what he was saying! I was just so excited to be getting married, in such a gorgeous setting, that it sounded like charlie brown's teacher. our guests all said they heard everything just fine though, and thought it was a fantastic ceremony. So I'm totally taking their word for it. Sam will see you when you pull up on the golf cart on the path as it comes racing across the resort If anyone is escorting you down the aisle, they'll meet you there at the main pathway, the MC will change the song for your walk when it's time, and you're off. they did a fantastic job following all of the stage directions I had - in fact I completely forgot to brief my brother that he was walking mom down the aisle (he knew, but we never really talked about it after I asked him to do it), or that I wanted dad to walk me. and uhm, I don't think I told my DH that he was seating his mother and sister lol but it all happened just perfectly from the photos. so don't worry. if it'll feel better to do a rehearsal with your bridal party, so they know the cues (music or whatever), then I'd totally do it with or without the minister. I really wanted to do the videographer - Mike from Mexican Wedding Video. I think it runs about $900 though which was waaay out of our budget. check out the official thread - I did update the video options there. in the end, one of our guests video'd it from his iPhone, and they patched it together for us. aaaannnnnd...we haven't watched it 4+ months later! so I'm kind of glad we didn't spend the $$ on the pro version. hang in there girl. it's normal to get nervous before your big day. we'll talk you off the cliff. because you WILL have the wedding of your dreams!
  7. Hi Karla, I really think it depends on the type of wedding you are planning, and the location. If you're choosing an all inclusive resort, and having all of the wedding events onsite, I'm not so sure it's worth hiring an outside wedding planner. If you're hosting a rehearsal dinner offsite, wedding at a church offsite of the resort, and a reception somewhere else too, it may be worthwhile. The resorts have dedicated wedding staff - both during the planning phases and onsite. They can generally provide you with options to help you plan the wedding of your dreams! Good luck with the planning.
  8. thanks!!! You will be just fine with the salon. the ladies really are magic. they did my mom's on my wedding day also. here's another photowhere you can see both of us: (I know...we look a lot alike! I am my mother...eek!)
  9. Hi Darcy, I had my hair done at the Casitas spa. They did a fantastic job! If you have inspiration pics, take them with you. I did the rehearsal as well, and just be aware that the length of time it takes is different for rehearsal vs. wedding day (much longer on wedding day - good thing!). Take any of your hair accessories (veil, head piece, tiara, etc.) with you to the rehearsal. And once you get it the way you want, snap a pic on your phone or camera so they can recreate it on your wedding day. here's one photo where you can see (some of) the detail of my hair. There's another pic in the spa right after she did it. I'll post it when I get home tonight. Be assured that they can recreate any look for your big day!
  10. Elissae! Only 2 more weeks! I'm catching up on your planning, and I am just in awe. I love, love the straws with the banner, and your starfish bottle openers are darling. Oh, I just love it all! Like someone else said, I want to go to your wedding!! I can't wait to see the photos of how everything comes together. your guests are going to have a blast. best wishes lady!
  11. We did ours via email. I think going the electronic route is a great budget saver!!
  12. I had so much fun looking through your pics Chris - looks like y'all had a BLAST!! In other news....the OFFICIAL EDR/EDCR Thread is now live!!! I have most of the primary content up from EDR & Lomas info for weddings & the resort in general. Here's where I need your help (you can PM your responses if you prefer): 1. If you want to be added to the roll call, please let me know. I'll need BDW name, first name and wedding date please. this is for both past & future brides! past brides are a fantastic resource for upcoming brides - especially those of you who have had more recent weddings, as things with Lomas & the resort change frequently. 2. Can you look through what I've posted, (and what is planned) and let me know if there's anything you'd want added, especially in the "wish I would have known" category? 3. If you have online links to your EDR resort and/or wedding review, photos and/or video and would like to share them on the Official Thread, please PM me and I will add them. thanks in advance!!!
  13. It's possible that you'd still need to put down some sort of deposit either per person or per room even when working with a travel agent. For us, it was a $50pp deposit. We weren't in a position to pay that for our guests, especially when (like you) we had no idea who or how many would actually go. We set a booking timeframe and had everyone who wanted to go put down their own deposit (non-refundable). Our travel agent handled all of that for us. We had a few people who cancelled and weren't able to get their deposits back. We also had a few people book last minute (and our TA was able to squeak them in at our group rate). The contract that was signed was between the supplier (AmEx travel) and our TA - it included a specified # of rooms, and then a corridor where we could cancel w/out penalty, and after that, cancellations would have a penalty. Rather than get into the "first 3 people to cancel would get their deposit back" mess, we made all deposits non-refundable. The biggest advantage of the TA was being able to understand what terms in the contract were "normal", have her handle all of the bookings (and cancellations), and have her negotiate with the supplier & resort on our behalf. It was much, MUCH easier than if I had tried to deal with all of that on my own. Plus, many times the TA's can get add-ons because of the volume of groups they book with the various resorts. It's a tough decision to guess how many rooms, and how many deposits to put down. Good luck!!
