Can any past Tucan/Quetzal brides share their experiences with the music choices? We're pretty much having live music for the ceremony portion only and are stuck deciding between the Mariachi and the Mexican Trio. Didn't know if the Mariachi sound too cheesy but it is Mexico and figured it might be appropriate. We don't have song preferences, we just want some live music and they can play whatever they choose. Any advice?

Hi Trace, Sorry I just saw your message! I'm not on here that much. Feel free to PM me anything you want. I'll answer you as best I can. Right now we have about 35 committed to going and some are still on the fence. I actually thought we'd have less but so far everyone seems on board! I'm not having a typical reception, just a dinner in one of the restaurants. That's all we want--nothing too fancy. As for the wedding coordinator, I deal with Antoineta...very nice, quick email responses...sometimes the language gets lost in translation so I try to be a simple as possible when I contact her. Haven't had any issues but I haven't really had to contact her with anything important. I have to submit some paperwork 2 months beforehand and other than that the planning is at a standstill (and I like it that way) since everything is really done when we get down there.

Hi Trace! You're a month after me!! As far as I know, I'm not doing a rehearsal or rehearsal dinner. The wedding coordinator informed me that there is a quick run through but nothing formal like it would be back home. We will also be getting legally married before we go down. The DW we will consider our official wedding date and the courthouse is more of a paperwork formality, hah.

Hi AC and KelBram! We're looking anywhere between 50-75...all depends on who ends up booking. We have about 20 confirmed so far! I requested a TON of information from the resort wedding coordinator and that has helped (spa, extra services, decor, etc). I'm constantly emailing them with questions. I also have the same impression that most of the details are finalized in the months before and even at the sit down the day we arrive. I've made a few decisions like decoration color, photographer, restaurant, and music but I'm saving the majority of it until I know who all is going. I've also been looking at pictures on TripAdvisor a lot which has been helpful.

Hi there!! After much deliberation and research, my fiance and I decided on the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal on December 8, 2012. We loved the dining variety for picky eaters, kid friendly, gorgeous beach, and beautiful grounds. Everyone so far seems to be super excited about the various animals that roam on property too. As for the wedding, we're able to get the wedding dinner we wanted and a simple ceremony on the beach. Currently I am in the midst of picking the colors for the ceremony which is a task in itself, haha. Most of the decisions for the wedding are made when we get down there next year. I'm very excited!

Thank you...I looked at this resort last night and thought it was gorgeous! It did not seem like there were many ocean front rooms but what they did have was very pretty. I think I will contact the WC and see what she has to say. This definitely ended up in the running.

I did reach out to my travel agent and she has suggested a few places which I then eliminated for various reasons but I wanted personal opinions. A lot of the places she suggested she had not been before. I have a Mexico brochure that I have destroyed by going through and making notes all over it, haha.

We have decided that Riviera Maya is where we'd like go for our destination wedding and have been reseaching resorts. Neither of us have ever been before but have heard many things about the area; in particular Playa del Carmen. I am looking for suggestions on resorts for a destination wedding. We realized this is difficult because we have to think about our guests instead of just us. As far as the wedding goes we want very simple and relaxed. Here's what we have going on: --If everyone we invite can go then we max out around 50 people and that includes children under 10. --For the resort: All-inclusive, kid friendly, easy access to activities outside of the resort. --Lots of dining options--American type food or Italian (picky eaters that I gotta worry about). --I like ocean front/view rooms or even a terrace with beach access. --Must have a beautiful beach both to swim/relax as well as for the ceremony. --Ceremony: On the beach, very casual --Reception: I would rather have a nice and simple dinner or a bonfire/beach party instead of the traditional reception. So far it's been hard to accomodate 50 people for that. I do not want it in a ballroom. Ideally I would want guests to spend no more than $1500 per person including airfare. Some of the places we have looked at are Dreams Riviera Cancun (and eliminated it because I don't like the views from the room if I can't get the oceanfront--mostly booked no matter when I look). I have also been seriously considering Gran Porto Real which I love. I contacted the coordinator there and she said for 50 people it would be a reception on the beach. I like that idea but I don't want dancing or anything traditional. I'd rather just have the simple dinner with everyone. It's not 5 star luxury but I think it's affordable for all my guests and still very nice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm new here and was seriously considering GPR for my destination wedding. Had a few questions... I would have about 50 people including children (mostly family if they all go) and for that many it would be the private reception since the restaurant cannot hold more than 30 people for the semi-private. I would do that on the beach. I was looking for just a simple dinner with everyone but I suppose with that amount it's impossible to do that. So if it would be the private reception, I would not have dancing or the traditional reception stuff. I am guessing I would not need the whole 3 hours too. I think the benefit to having it on the beach is that it would feel less formal than in the ballroom for me. I don't want any frills, just simple and easy! Does anyone have any thoughts on this...have you done this type of reception?
