Yes, that totally helps thanks...and it makes sense. I think we'll just let everyone know that we'll try and have tables reserved in the buffet area for the birthday supper for my BF and FI's daughter (which is more important for us to celebrate/acknowledge than a "welcome dinner" anyway) and talk to the WP ahead of time about a birthday cake. Not sure if they'll go for that in the buffet area though.

Difficult Family - still 16months to go!
MJKH replied to Sunshine2680's topic in Wedding Etiquette, Traditions, to dos
Well, I'll trump that and tell you that I'm 40 years old and have waited my entire life to get married! ; ) We too, made it very clear right from the start that we knew most of our loved ones would not be able to join us for one reason or another. We gave them a heads up about our at-home reception right away, and told them that we looked forward to celebrating with them at this later date. My FI and I have never been "wedding" people, but we've certainly wanted to be married. Both sides/parents were offering money...telling us that they just wanted to see us married. We love to travel, we LOVE Mexico...we told them "this is what we want to do" and they've been supportive. They've also been respectful of our very private/practical nature and don't ask a whole lot of questions...which is GOOD, because I want people to be surprised with lots of things that will be happening that week! I created a Facebook "group" with details for all of our guests...those coming and those who will not be coming all have access to the info. However, I don't put day to day activity/information about the wedding on my FB...but that's just me. I'm not interested in random comments from the peanut gallery. What a shame that they are making it tough though for you to share your joy with those that really ARE interested in where you are at with your planning! I read a comment from a bride earlier today about feeling like ever since they announced they're having a DW, that people are avoiding them. I certainly feel that way with my brother. He's the oldest (I have 2 younger sisters as well), and he has yet to board the party plane for Mexico. I respect that he's a homebody...they're not big into travel...and his boys have lots of hockey commitments in the winter. But, COME ON...it's ONE FREAKIN' WEEK I'm asking for! Money is not the issue for them...and to make matters worse, I worry that there is a lot of tension between him and my SIL over this whole issue. She told me the other day that "some people from this house will be coming, we're just not sure what that will look like yet". She's totally on board, as is my 9 year old niece. Ugghhh...I'm so mad at my brother for being a dink about this. We nearly lost my dad to an aneurysm earlier this year...my three siblings and their partners are done having children...we have no plans for kids...I just think, what an opportunity for us all to get together, celebrate family and marriage...taking family photos all together (which we have NEVER done). I could cry just thinking about it... But, I continue to try to keep everything in perspective. We KNOW that this DW is right for us, and sooooo look forward to sharing the week with family and friends (and having the week after at the resort all to ourselves). I have heard every reason under the sun for why people can't come, and that's totally ok with me. No pressure, no worries. It's funny though how some people just ramble on and on about why they can't come...kinda like I'm doing now... Anyway, would I love my brother and nephews to be at the wedding? ABSOLUTELY! But I won't beg, plead, or make anyone feel guilty...he has to do what's right for him. So thanks for letting me rant...we will continue to just shake our heads and say "what's wrong with people?!?"...ughhh! -
Ohhhh boy...can I just say that there have been a number of discussions in this household about that very subject. FI is against making lists/registering/suggesting...anything of that nature...for ANY occasion, whether it be birthdays, Christmas, etc. I, on the other hand, LOVE to work off a registry. I make it my mission to seek it out as soon as it's available and watch the flyers and in-store specials for items on that registry. A couple of weeks ago, I presented a bride with a beautiful $70 salad bowl on her registry as a shower gift...giddy inside that I paid a mere $17.99 for it a few weeks earlier. NOW...I recognize that I am not in the norm when it comes to bridal registry shopping. Many a store clerk have told me that guests usually race in with their hair on fire an hour before the reception is to start, wondering what is left on the registry that they can purchase. But it's a fun game for me! My big issue with registering then, is why would I put a $150 henkels knife on our registry and have a guest purchase it at that price...when I know good and well that if I watch the sales, I could get it for 50 - 60% off if I bought it myself!?! So here's me, scanning the flyers each week for the items on MY registry...thinking, well I might as well go out and get it myself for that price! FI's mother was going to buy us one of those really expensive pot sets that they sell at trade shows, fairs, etc as a wedding gift. For that price, we could replace our dining room set that I bought for $200 15 years ago! This spring, there was a door-crasher special at a major department store here of the top of the line Henkels pot sets ($1000) , WITH a bonus 18/10 cutlery service for 8...all for $249! Our old pots went into the camping gear box, and FI's mother doesn't need to worry about pots for us anymore. To a certain extent, we are sitting where you are sitting...blissfully happy and really in need of nothing in particular. We LOVE to travel...that is our passion..and as it happens, the travel agency we are using offers a travel registry...where they will hold the money in trust to use on your next vacation/honeymoon (no service fees with them). I thought maybe we had reached a compromise in deciding to register for a few items that really would be nice to replace (with a plan to donate old items to charity)...as well as to do a travel registry. But neither of our mothers was wild about the idea...and my aunts had a bit of a discussion with me as to what they wanted to do...they would prefer to just give money. UGHHHH...I don't know what the solution is. Believe me...I have seen some of the "interesting" items given over the years to couples...and those who register are not immune! The store clerk that we did meet with about doing a registry mentioned that, for couples in our situation, she suggests scanning items you already have and indicating that they are purchased. So for example, put a crockpot on your registry, but then go in and mark it as "purchased", you will be far less likely to get 10 crockpots for shower and wedding gifts (according to her anyway). I thought that was an interesting concept. If you do a search, there are all kinds of "cutesy" poems and whatnot that could be written in a shower invite, on your wedding website, etc. to indicate that you'd prefer $ over gifts. That is not really our style. We chose not to include anything about gifts with the invitation as well. I've kinda had a discussion with my mom about things that we could use that we couldn't even register for...like dishes at Costco or seasonal/camping stuff that's being cleared out of the stores for CHEAP as we speak! As for the others, I think most people will get the hint...those that don't likely have something already tucked away in their closets with our names on it. I don't think I've answered your questions, but let's see what others have to say...

Cute...I would totally pick up some m&ms for the kids and those little suitcases I like WITH the stationary stuff in them. The Dollarama I was at today had huge stacks of boxes down every aisle needing to be unpacked and put on the shelves. I was creepin' around...trying to get any idea of what might be coming!

I know...all of my guests will not be getting a complete "VP" kit by any stretch...bags for the attendants and mothers...a bag for me...some guests will get a pen and a sticky note...some will get a larger note pad, etc. I ordered a shirt and wasn't blow away by the quality, so I'm not sure how many of those I'll get. I priced out what it would cost to send JUST a bag, pen, sticky note and note pad to my address and it's $5.79.

Hi! I'm not sure that we've met yet ; ) I started reading your thread last night, and when i got to the part about your stuff appearing on Google, I freaked out a little bit and called it a night! I agree with Tori...I love these traditional programs. How the heck did you make that beautiful bow...is it a separate attachment, or did you wrap it around and tie it like that? I would like to make some barrettes for the flower girls using bows like that!

GIRLS...you'd be proud! I'm really getting the hang of Vistaprint. I only got 4 hours of sleep last night, but I figured out that it does some really neat things. Just wondering, has anyone ever seen the round or oval stickers for free? Should I hold out or just pay for them? I know I could do them on return address labels, but I have my heart set on a different shape.

I'm still getting to know VP and all they have to offer...so is the offer that is out this week one of the best you've seen? Or does it ever get any better (i.e., free shipping for Canadians)? Am I right that you are only allowed 10 free things per order? I'm also wanted to know if there if more of a strategy to this (i.e., to save on shipping, order all the big things together and all the smaller things together)?

Ohhhhhh...I loooove it...it's so dreamy!

Is it a bad time to ask you for a template? Hahaaa...just kidding! I don't even think I've seen your invites yet Tori...

They're stunning...you made a great choice! -
I've been trying to think thru all the scenerios in my head...here is what I THINK we will be doing: The majority of our guests will be travelling on the same flight as us out of Saskatoon. I don't want to put the bags together ahead of time...I think everything will stay nicer that way...but we will have a very clear and efficient (hopefully!) plan of attack for when we arrive at the resort in the middle of the afternoon. NONE of our guests know about the OOTs, and to keep it that way, my FI and I will hunker down in our suite (with a cocktail or two) until supper while our guests get settled in and look around the resort. Once the bags are nearly complete, my FI will head to the front desk for an up-to-the-minute room # list (just in case anyone has been switched to another room since check-in)...we'll mark the tags on the bags...then call a bellman to come and deliver them to the rooms (WP said just to plan to provide a tip). Surprisingly, my FI suggested he'd like us to deliver them to each room...but we talked about the pros and cons and will be going the bellman route. My biggest concerns: 1) that our guests are indeed IN the room numbers provided by the front desk and 2) that some random idiot doesn't come along and grab bags off the bellman's cart while he's making deliveries to the upper floors. The solution to that would be to accompany the bellman on his route...but the whole idea of us not making the deliveries is so that we then have time to freshen up and get settled, rather than spending an hour or two hauling around 25 - 30 bags. Sometimes you just have to "LET GO" of the need to be in control of everything, right? Whichever bride said she likes the idea of the guests walking into their room and thinking "OOOO...What's this?!?"...that's what I want our guests to have out of the experience too. I've been thinking too about treats for the bags...edible treats to include. There is FOOD A-PLENTY on the resort, and anything chocolate is out of the question due to extreme heat. But we all have our little obsessions, and one of mine is "bar snacks". That's what was missing the first time we went to the resort...at 3 am you could order room service, but it would take an hour...and sometimes you just need something a little salty to go with a cold one. Costco has boxes of those long skinny bags of nuts...peanuts, mixed nuts, etc. I think we'll include a couple of those bags of nuts in each OOT too.

The first and last pairs are my favourite...but all are nice options!

Emergen-C located in Saskatoon...at Winners...actually had lots that don't expire until the end of 2013. Check. But I should have asked those that are the believers if there is a flavour you prefer over the others/any flavours to avoid. They had a tropical one, lemon-lime, raspberry, acai berry, cranberry something...I think that was it. Is it tasty to drink...like do you sip it out of a water bottle or chug it down as fast as possible?

Ahhh...you beat me to it! I happened to be at the mall this morning and thought I would pop in to LVEN to check these bags out. I'm sorry about the comment before about it being a "fancy ziploc"...clearly over the phone there was a miscommunication between the girl and myself as to what they look like. THEY ARE REALLY CUTE...they're nylon and have sort of a thin rubbery coating on the inside...they carry them all the time apparently and they are $1...BUT...for some reason, they didn't have them hanging out at the store here...they had in the cupboard underneath the registers. So if you don't see them at the store, ask!
