  1. @tinkersofi The girl in Davids mentioned the petals and I'm going to get some. The ones in David's are $9 but she said Dr Scholl's makes them too, so I'm going to look for them. She said the same thing and with the style of the shoes my foot is definitely going to be sliding forward so I want to try them out with a pair of shoes at work first. I think it's a cool idea. As to the table colours the thing is, we're only having one long rectangular table - we're only 10 in total - so that's why I was worried about overdoing the colour. But we'll be doing the restaurants napkins and stuff so the only colour I want, except for souvenir maracas at each place setting, is the chair bows and table runner. Joyce has said we'll use to the two small bouquets from the gazebo for table centerpieces and my bouquet at the cake table, then some LED candles on the table and that's it. We aren't a big enough group for anything more than that. It's ok - if I start lugging suitcases and suitcases of stuff Doug will have a fit! lol I know everything I have will be one bag and that's it. @yycbride2016 Absolutely go and check out David's. The veil was $80 and it's going to cost me $34 to have it shortened. It's just a bit too long and we were working with the fullness of my dress. I also want to have a layer of crinoline taken out of my dress but I only want the veil at about 36 inches. This one is 40. Well at least I think that's what I'm thinking right now. They had veils all different lengths and prices. I didn't even realize I had picked one so cheap until she told me the price. I just went for the sparkle because it so closely matched my dress lol Plus the salesgirl was talking about how nice it would look in pictures with the sparkle so I picked it! I haven't seen my dress yet even though its been delivered and I won't get to see it until the beginning of August. We'll pick it up on the way back from vacation from my son's in the US but I can't open it until we're home and I'm somewhere Doug won't see it. At least it arrived safely which is the only thing I was worried about!!
  2. Yeah me too. They charge you 5 bucks for it and she is telling me that there is a spray you can buy at a shoe repair type place that will waterproof dyed shoes so that the colour doesn't run. Plus my foot slides around a bit and they told me I can get petals to put inside the shoes so that doesn't happen. Geez..... I just finished saying yesterday - you really do learn something new every day!
  3. I never even thought about pesos! That could very well be right! I know what my cake is costing and it's 2 tier and feeds about 20 to 35 people and it's nowhere near that price, nor is our dinner! I would definitely go through the pricing and see if you can get an explanation. @@calgarybride2015 may have solved it.
  4. So I went to the dentist tonight and walked out of the dentist's office..... and into David's Bridal! Not a good move..... I bought a veil and shoes! lol The veil is perfect!! It has a bit of sparkle on it that I think is going to perfectly match my dress. They call it a starburst. I think I need to take it back to be shortened though cuz it's a bit longer than what I wanted. I think. Yeah I'm sure. At least I think I'm sure. Am I?? The shoes worked out great, but I'm still going to get the Adrianna Papell's since I love them so much and the colour I can wear again anyway. They aren't over dressy that I couldn't manage them for work, and even in Mexico if we do one of the nicer a la carte restaurants one night I can wear them for that. Right? I already said.... I'm a total shoe slut so one more pair is only going to make my life easier! The shoes are being dyed Horizon (royal blue).
  5. Those flowers are really pretty!! I took a look at the website and there's a lot of really nice stuff!! Will definitely go back and take another look!
  6. Wow $1400 for a cake?? That definitely seems over the top! I would question that for sure! Would it not be a good idea to speak to the wedding coordinator at your resort and just see if they can explain the calculations for you? How many tiers is that? It just seems unusually high for a cake. Yes - resorts definitely will up price things for brides and it can very frustrating, but that just sounds totally out there! I'm sorry I can't help with any names at all in Cabo, but maybe there is a bride here on the site that might have a suggestion. Good luck!
  7. There have been a few discussions around the site about this and it seems that a lot of the ladies are saying that guests don't seem to expect you to occupy their time. It's their vacation too after all. Having said that, it doesn't hurt to have a couple of things organized but definitely make it optional. That way if people want to just lie on the beach or by the pool, they can without feeling like they have to do something they don't want to do. As to cheap - I don't know. I've been to Cabo twice and loved it but we were just two so multiplying what we did by 30 to 40 might not be so cheap! We did the whale watching cruise but maybe you could offer to pay half for your guests instead of the whole amount? Cabo is a great place but I don't know that I've ever done anything cheap there! Maybe some of the other ladies might have suggestions! Good luck!
  8. @Mrsntobe Thanks so much for sharing something positive. You're right - we do spend so much time complaining about the lack of service on things that we do forget to praise those that provide good service! Thanks for the gentle reminder! I'm glad they came through for you. Flowers can be pretty important to your overall look and vision so the fact that they were willing to make sure you're happy is big. As well it's something good for other brides to know!
  9. @TinkerSofi @yycbride2016 Thank you both of you. I'm anxious to see how they turn out. I'm thinking fuchsia chair bows and turquoise table runner. @@calgarybride2015 has been a huge help with my colours. I just think Doug won't like pink on the table so I think it's the only way to go. But I don't want to overdo the colour.
  10. @TraceyT Akumal is a resort I've heard good things about. The other is Mayakoba which is a bit of a smaller resort and Le Blanc. I don't know much about them detail wise, just from my own search. Tulum is at least 30 minutes or more with traffic from Playa del Carmen but it would be by bus or taxi so that might not be so bad for you to sit. There are other small resorts but I don't know what star rating you're looking for. Check any of the travel websites - sell off vacations, or itravel2000 or travel nation Canada and you could take a look at them, then look through the resort reviews here. As well a travel agent would be able to help you out with the specifics of a resort. I see you're in Calgary AB - there is an agent here that the ladies seem to recommend very highly. I don't have her info handy but I'm sure one of the other ladies will. As @@veryvalentine mentioned, the beaches in the Yucatan are having a bit of trouble right now with seaweed in a big way. But who's to say by January that hasn't cleared up. There is no concrete answer as to what's causing it - it's several factors - but it's pretty much all up and down the coast as far down as Tulum. Good luck with the surgery! I hope it all goes well!
  11. Hi and welcome! There is a whole section on resort reviews as well as current threads that you could spend some time reading. Just do a search up top for what you want and the threads will come up. Choosing your resort is probably the most stressful part of planning and if you already have a travel agent, that's another good step. I wouldn't pay a lot of attention to trip advisor unless all of the reviews are totally horrible, only because you'll never get everyone 100% happy. Somebody will always have something to say because what one person likes, somebody else might not. Read it yes, but don't make your decision only from reading trip advisor. Don't feel that you have to work only with the travel agent that you have. If you aren't getting good service, then ask around for someone else. A good TA will work with you with your budget, the budget you want for your guests and any other things you must have and don't want. The ladies here are more than willing to share experiences and tips/ideas so you've come to the right place! Good luck and happy planning!
  12. Hi Congrats and welcome! I did a search up top in the search bar on Huatulco and came up with several threads but I can't post the links with this computer unfortunately. I've heard over the years that it's a beautiful part of Mexico. I've done PV and Mazatlan, as well as Cabo a couple of times but never Huatulco or Ixtapa so can't speak from personal experience. I would definitely recommend doing the search yourself and spending some time reading. The other thing would be a travel agent. I don't know if you're in the US or Canada - the administrators of this site are destination wedding specialists and I'm sure they would be able to help you. One of them is also a DW bride! As well a TA can help you with assisting your guests with their travel arrangements and help you out with what you absolutely want and don't want. You can contact Wright Travel through a link in this site. The ladies here are great so I know if anyone else has any info they will definitely share it! Good luck and happy planning!
  13. Congrats and welcome! What an interesting place for a wedding!! You will absolutely have to post pictures of your wedding! I'll bet they'll be gorgeous! The Chateau Frontenac is a beautiful historic hotel. I was there many years ago and it's gorgeous. Depending on how cold it gets, the views of the frozen St Lawrence river full of ice are stunning for a photo backdrop. Usually though in February in Quebec City, that's not an issue! In terms of what you can bring in with you, Canada is much more lax for bringing things in than the US. I do the trip constantly back and forth mostly crossing at Buffalo NY but also at Calis ME and we never take food with us. We will travel with an empty cooler and customs almost always asks us to open up the back of the truck and they will look inside. It's totally different coming the other way. I always do shopping and bring back milk, cheese, fruit, vegetables, meat and never have an issue coming back to Canada. I'm not sure what kind of things you're thinking about but I don't think you'll have any issue. As far as buying - Quebec City is a full on city with grocery stores and shopping so you would be able to buy almost anything I would think. You can also buy booze in grocery stores in Quebec, something you cannot do in every province in Canada. I really don't remember distances so I'm afraid in terms of your transportation timing I can't help out. There are definitely limousine services - perhaps a bus type of thing if you wanted. Just search around on the internet and you should get some info. As well I'm sure there are other Canadian brides here that might be familiar with the area and could provide more details. Good luck and happy planning!
  14. @vancouverpetunia Are you serious? Good to know! You really do learn something new everyday. I'm lucky in that I get "news" from my sister if there's anything weird and wacky going on at Toronto airport but obviously she doesn't know about any others that she has ever mentioned to me. She'll mention industry news if there is something national, or if there is something special out of customs. @calgarybride2015 That lady I was mentioning last fall, she had roller bags and I guess it can mess up the overhead bins too! With wheels sticking out it makes it harder to get them to fit. I watch people trying to stuff their bags into overheads and just chuckle to myself. You know how they make the announcement when you land about being careful when you open them because the contents could have shifted in flight? lmao Well - I've seen why!!! And how do you get it all into a backpack??? Thankfully we don't have a lot of décor stuff, and our welcome bags I think we're going to do at home before we go. There are only 4 so it's not a big deal.
  15. You're lucky in the US. I don't think they're as picky. It all started here because of charging for checked bags. People are trying to bring all their luggage as carryon instead of checking bags because it means they have to pay. That's why they're now enforcing the size restrictions to stop people bring everything as cabin bags. The other thing it does too is screws up the plane's weight distribution since generally they don't weigh carryon bags. All it takes is a few people pushing the envelope to ruin it for everyone else. We flew out west late last fall and some lady got on with a kid about 3 and I guess her mother. They had 3 seats thank goodness but they had FIVE bags!!!! All close to the weekender size but there were 2 I'm certain were over the size allowed. they wouldn't git under the seat and they were so big the flight attendant couldn't find room in the overheads to squeeze all of them in! She ended up with at least one bag that I remember all the way at the front of the aircraft. I told my husband that we were definitely getting off the plane ahead of this lady cuz I wasn't waiting around while she blocked the aisle digging out 5 bags!!! Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
  16. lol Of course not Kim! You're a smart traveller! However according to my sister, the problem is not all of the airlines have the exact same measurements for carry on. The charters have slightly different measurements than the regular airlines so it's a case of buyer beware! I think she said there is a spot on the airport website for Toronto that talks about carry on allowed luggage. Not sure if it's the same for the other major cities like Calgary and Vancouver airports.
  17. Wow - the fact that you're doing a countdown like that and I'm just a couple of weeks before you? Yikes! Thank goodness it isn't our wedding... otherwise I'd be really freaking out! lol My only glitch - we still don't know where we're staying! I think the decision is made "in mind" but we haven't actually booked and I'm thinking that will change next week. We're going on vacation too next Friday and I'm sort of thinking I would like to book the resort before we go. Then nothing to worry about when we get back! I hope you're going to do pictures for the legal!! Absolutely want to see them!! It will all work out just as your flights worked out in the end. The angels are blowing you good luck kisses!!
  18. Not sure if you're in the US or canada, but the latest is that in canada they are now enforcing the size limits for carry ons. There is a "guide" at the check in area and if your bag doesn't fit the guide, they will force you to check it. My sister is a terminal supervisor at Pearson and she said it has slowed down the check in process as well as forcing people to check bags that they hadn't planned to check because the size isn't fitting. She said people are getting quite irate because they're ending up over the one bag limit, or in the case of air canada, they're ending up paying twice instead of once. Those are really nice bags! I like the patterns that they come in.
  19. Wow - U2 tickets??? Can't say no to that deal!! Nice that FI was able to put it together to go. Love the little girl dresses. Been there done that! lol With 4 granddaughters...... well, now you get the idea! lol I love your colour palette! Blue is my favourite colour and the ones you've picked really do go together nicely. I'm using Malibu too with Begonia (fuchsia pink!) but I'm trying to do shoes in Horizon which is basically royal blue. Having a hard time finding exactly what I want though. I'm thinking I may end up going the "dyed" route.
  20. Oh - that sucks, but good you're getting a break!! Thoughts ladies? Change the date or go with what's planned and try and do another night as well?
  21. There's always the www.preownedweddingdresses.com website for veils too if you want to have a look there. Can you tell me the name of the store in Edmonton? Thanks!
  22. @tinkersofi Believe me when I say there is no rhyme or reason to Canada post's delivery patterns and I'm dead serious when I say that!!! I'm not being facetious! If I remember correctly Richmond BC is a major hub but why it would go from the delivery city back to Richmond is anyone's guess. I would go after them and keep after them. And then they wonder why they're losing money and people hardly use the service anymore..... lol
  23. Congrats and welcome to the site! There are several past and present Punta Cana brides here! Just do a search in the search bar up top and I know you'll connect to several forums that you can read through. Definitely spend some time looking and reading. The ladies here are more than willing to pass on their experiences! Good luck and happy planning!
  24. You're not alone with the question of getting all of your décor items to your destination. The resorts very strongly advise against shipping anything to them. It can very easily get lost for starters, and if it gets to the wrong person at the resort, it could end up anywhere. Courier isn't the most reliable in Mexico so you'd be taken a huge chance that your items wouldn't make it to where they are supposed to go. The brides here generally carry their items themselves or get family members/bridal party to help out by dividing things up between several people. You can always pack it all and take it yourself if you're worried. if you scout through the forums you'll find various packing tips from the ladies that will help you out. It also depends on how much you want to spend on extra luggage!! Definitely any breakable items should be well wrapped in a suitcase or placed in a carryon. It's also recommended that you keep all of your receipts and carry them with you, as well as making a list of all of the items that are packed in luggage. Mexican customs has been known to ask about the items as well as request the value. It doesn't happen often but I have seen reports of it happening. I believe there is a monetary limit of how much you can take into the country with you, but I would advise checking the Mexican customs website for verification. The best advice I can give you is be organized! Know what is packed where just in case your luggage is searched. You just never know (it's totally random) but it's not worth the aggravation of not knowing what you've packed and where you packed it.
  25. Congrats and welcome! You'll find this site very helpful as you go through your planning journey, and the brides are very willing to share tips and ideas. Do you have a travel agent yet? That would definitely be something I would recommend. They will become your new best friend and will help to take some of the stress from you by assisting your guests with arrangements and any travel questions they may have. You don't mention if you're in the US or Canada (it's a mix of both here) but the administrators of this site are destination wedding specialists and would likely be able to assist you with what you want and don't want and the price point for your guests along with your own wedding budget. They can be reached through the link on this site. Have you tried doing a search for the resort you're considering or looking through the resort review section? We do encourage returning brides to submit a review on their resort since it helps new brides to be with their planning, so definitely worth a look. I know there have been a few brides here that have dealt with various Riu resorts. Good luck and happy planning!
