  1. Just curious how you're deciding how much time you want? I'm wondering about the difference between 3 and 4 hours in terms of what you actually get. 3 hours seems awfully short when I think about it, so I'm leaning towards 4. But still thinking about it. That's good to know. There were a couple that I looked at and dismissed them because the rates were just too high. I did have one that offered, without being asked, to work with me on price mostly because ours is a vow renewal and our group will be really, really small (if anyone actually does end up going with us! lol) So far that one is at the top of my list!
  2. Definitely post pics when you get it!! I'd be very curious to know your thoughts on what you receive. I'm also curious - did you order a standard size, or did you do specific measurements? I want champagne colour or the blush pink - did you go with white? If not, how did you decide on the colour? Looking at the "sample" colours on the site I'm worried about how close the dress would be to the colours they have posted.
  3. Hi ladies. Gran Bahia Principe Jamaica bride here, and you will find a huge forum of brides from there as well. Obviously I will have good things to say since we got married there. our short list was Lady Hamilton and GBPJ and we ended up with GBPJ because of the price point for packages and the wedding service. The beach wedding gazebo is unique in that you get your almost totally private wedding but you're right on the beach. We had nothing wrong with the food and drinks at all. Both were great. The atmosphere is awesome too. The wedding service we received was top notch, and we had a lot of things go wrong before we even got to Jamaica. But the WC stuck with us and didn't give up, and in the end both WCs signed our marriage licence. So I am totally on the side of Gran Bahia. I know there are other brides that will give you their view on the other resorts so you'll have lots of information that will help you make your choice. Good luck and happy planning! This is the gazebo at GBPJ
  4. Congrats and welcome to BDW! You will definitely find a ton of information here and the brides, past and present, are always willing to share tips and ideas. I would suggest using the search bar and keying what you're looking for. I would almost guarantee there will be at least one forum that will pop up that you can read through, probably more! As well, take a look at the resort and vendor reviews. They might help you make a decision on the "where" of your destination wedding! Good luck and happy planning!!
  5. I did post this earlier, but for any of you that don't want to actually pay for the steel drum band, I have an alternative. It's steel drum wedding music, just without the cost. It's what we put on our CD and it played beautifully! If anyone is interested, let me know.
  6. Congrats! It sounds like you're well on your way! Happy planning!
  7. For that many people I think a travel agent is a must! You'll go crazy with questions, and wants. Let a travel agent handle it all. That's what they're trained to do! And besides, if something goes wrong with someone's arrangements, it's on her head, not yours! Welcome to the site by the way! You'll find so much useful information, and tips and ideas. Take some time to read through and look up some of the resort reviews and follow a couple of the forums. It will be well worth your time and really get you excited about your planning! Good luck, have fun and happy planning!!
  8. Yep! What are you torn about? Jamaica is a beautiful place to get married, and there are several different threads on here for Jamaican resorts!
  9. Ouch. That's a lot. I was thinking about MP and was going to make inquiries. Don't think I will anymore.
  10. Does anyone know what is close to this resort in terms fo things to do? Just curious. Looking online it looks like it's sort of off by itself. Bars or shopping close by? Whoever has photos or anything else, I would take a look. We were married in Jamaica and thinking of a vow renewal next year in Mexico, but when I looked at this resort, it's absolutely gorgeous. I don't need to make a final decision yet - I have a long time to go and things to get through first before we can finalize, but this resort looks fabulous!
  11. Geez. Makes all of our stuff seem pretty small in comparison and we did end up just the two of us. No witnesses, no bridal party, nothing and nobody lol We had the resort wedding coordinators as our witnesses. Yeah two strangers signed our marriage licence lol But you know what? We had a great time. They treated us like royalty I think because they felt sorry for us lol, and we had got married, which is what it was all about in the first place. Then everyone that said no showed up for our AHR, we got all the family pictures and it turned out alright. Sometimes life is just that. Life and you just have to go along with it. I got what I wanted and that was marrying the absolute love of my life!
  12. Yep - I have to weigh in on the black belt one too! It looks great! The other one is gorgeous too, but the second one totally works for you!
  13. I can definitely sympathize! Similar thing happened to us and the friendship is no longer. There are going to be a lot of people that don't agree with what you want to do. I've said it before - you will really find out who your friends are. Yes some people have legitimate financial hardship and really aren't able to travel, or other circumstances and for that you have to be understanding. It's one of the trials fo a destination wedding for sure. But if someone is going to wreck a friendship over it, then is it really worth it? You are entitled to be happy about getting married in a tropical paradise. Don't let anyone bring you down over it. Life is too short. I came too close to finding that out the hard way!
  14. Welcome to the site! You'll find all the tips and information you could possibly want on this site, and then some! The ladies are more than willing to share their ideas and provide insight! Congrats and happy planning! For the ladies that have so many things going on with their plans, I can sympathize, believe me. We ended up being just the 2 of us because everyone backed out, including the MOH and bestman. I understand that it's hurtful and disappointing. We want everyone to be as happy as we are! There are 2 things though in life that bring out the worst in families - weddings and funerals. And destination weddings I think just make things worse in some ways because there is a cost involved. It will work out, honest. We got married in a beautiful setting in Jamaica, the wedding coordinators were our witnesses and we had a wonderful time. Not what I wanted, and there is a friendship that will never be repaired over it but sometimes that's life. And sometimes you really do find out who your friends are. The best thing is not to let other people ruin what is a happy time for you. Easier said than done, yes but just keep reminding yourself that the people that attend your wedding love you both very much and have made a lot of effort to be there. Appreciate them. Appreciate the man you're marrying and the fact that you can go to a beautiful, tropical setting and have the wedding of your dreams! Good luck!
  15. Congrats and welcome! The MR is truly a beautiful area for a destination wedding. I know you will find lots of tips and planning ideas on this site that will help you out! Good luck and happy planning!
  16. Hi Maggie, Congratulations and welcome to BDW! You're going to love this site!! There is a virtual ton of information, tips and ideas on destination weddings, in some fabulous tropical getaways. Of course you'll get all kinds of opinions on resorts and locations. I can personally definitely recommend Jamaica! Plus the Mayan Riviera of Mexico is of course a favourite. Then there is the Pacific coast of Mexico too that has it's own natural beauty and stunning resorts. I'm in Canada too, and you'll find a whole lot of Canadian brides, past and present on this site. The options are just a little bit different in terms of travel for Canadian brides. We have charter air packages that the US doesn't have so they are structured a little differently, as well as how you book, If you're in the Toronto area, I can help you out with a couple of agent names. I would definitely recommend that you at least get an area of the Caribbean in mind. That would help narrow things down for you. Maybe take some time to browse through the Resort Reviews and see what other brides have said about different resorts and it might help you get closer to making a decision. As well, there will obviously be reviews for adults only resorts which you might help you eliminate them if you want everyone together. The best thing I can say is spend some time going through the site. You can use the search bar and you will most likely get a forum or review of some kind on just about anything you're looking for. The ladies here are always willing to help out. There are lots of vendor reviews too that may also help you narrow down the "where" of getting married. Have fun and happy planning!
  17. enjoyed reading this. all true and well said! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. that's a great idea!! something even Canadian brides could be part of too! I'd say count us in!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I have a couple of questions. I can't believe the dresses that are on the dressilyme site. I found several of the ones I've been looking at - Allure, Maggie Sottero & Essense Designs. How are you deciding what to order? Are you trying on dresses first to see what you like? Or just taking a chance on what's on the website and ordering? My wedding dress was very simple. With everything we've been through, and still have to get through, if we're able to do a vow renewal next year I want something that's going to my his jaw drop. I want drama and bling! I'm torn between 2 styles but like I said, I found several of them on the dressilyme site. Even though the prices are super reasonable, I was thinking I would definitely want to try stuff on before I decide. Anyone else doing the same thing?
  20. I just had a look at this resort and it looks spectacular! Couple of questions to anyone that can answer: The gazebo looks really cool - how private is it? Do you get gawkers? How far is the resort to Playa del Carmen? Are there any really good bars close by, even if they're on the resort? Anything that has a good party! What about shopping? Thanks!
  21. I think I'd be upset. I agree with the others though. Talk to the guest and find out if these others are planning to attend your wedding. They may not be but it's best to know. I also agree that it's very rude not to consult with the bride first!
  22. www.dessy.com this site has the dresses and a storefinder for Canada. just put in your postal code. good luck! I found 2 in Milton and 1 in MIssissauga
  23. Sounds like you're much more ahead of things than you thought! Good for you! If you want the names of agents to talk to, let me know. At least by talking to them you'll know where you're at and when you'll be able to discuss trip costs with them! Have fun!
