Are you looking for a banquet hall with catering? There are lots of party spaces in NYC but you'd have to get an outside caterer. Is that an option for you?

So glad I'm not alone in this boat. The FI is less flexible than I am in his willingness to take on any debt (even modest debt) for a local wedding. So we are having a destination wedding because I refuse to go to just have a civil ceremony with a judge. So HE's the one that's tipped the scale for a destination wedding and its HIS family that is hemming and hawing about going abroad - and not offering any cash to have it here. At the end of the day none of my relatives live in our state and my family is at least 3 times the size of his. So if we had a local wedding it was going to be a destination for most of our guests anyway - to a not so fun destination. So Mexico here we come! Thanks for letting me vent ladies and for the support. Let's go!

I can feel you. We've changed our plans so many times and my friends have had to endure all the changes. But what I've learned is that the people that are really in your corner will love and support you no matter what you do. That being said, if you really want an AHR it sounds like you can consider scaling it down and/or pushing it back. If you don't want to have it, then don't. Those who love and support you will understand it either way.

I thought Mexico was the most cost effective. Can you brides share what you're seeing in Jamaica?

No, two strand twists are not along your scapl. It's like a corn rown but done to look like a two stranded rope along your head. When you take your hair out it looks like cork screws. You can fluff it out or pin it half up, what ever you'd like.

Well staying out of the water is definitely a challenge. But - if you were able to do it you could practice at a salon at home getting a really tight straw set. Let it hang out for a couple of days then go to a stylist you trust and let them do something fabulous that is kind of pinned up so it looks totally different. Take pictures and then let some one in Mexico do the pin up for you. If you wanted to be really certain the curls would last, you could travel with the rods in your hair (yikes!). Sounds extreme, I know, but some might be willing. Anyway, I have natural hair too and I wouldn't trust many people to get my hair from its natural state to a less natural state, I would trust most reputable salons to get it in a style once its been processed. Another style that travels and transforms well is the two stranded corn row. Your hair comes out spirally and can be fluffed to look wonderful. And if the braids are done well you can still ook fabulous while traveling. Good luck!

I asked resorts if they offered discounts for kids when I was comparing pricing. Many currently have promotions where kids 12 and under stay free and I asked them if resorts were able to extend that offer to my group. Most said yes. Other resorts also offered discounts for kids 17 and under since they can't drink. That price was 1/3 of the adult rate. So I'd comparison shop and ask for the discount when its not clear that they offer one.

Hey Msglave. How long will you be in Mexico before your weddng? I think you are on the right track with something liek a straw set. My experience with them is they can be done really tight and hard and last a few days that way then by thetime you need to shine you can fluff them out a little bit and look gorgeous. As long as you don't get in the water before the big day, that can do it.

Hi everyone. I'm a Newbie originally from NYC currently living near Raleigh, NC. My fiance and I are looking forward to getting married in April 2011. All of our families live in either other parts of NC, NYC, or DC Metro Area. We figured if everyone has to travel anyway, might as well make it a trip of a lifetime! I am leaning towards a Riviera Maya location (top choices right now the Riu Palace Riviera Maya or Dreams Tulum). I welcome your advice and encouragement and hope to offer the same.
