The buffet or theme night would be free. I think this is a little ridiculous if they actually charge to have you setup a table for 10 in one of the restaurants, seeing as we can just go to the restaurant ourselves and ask for a table for 12 people, at no extra cost, and we can do that at any restaurant. Even if the restaurant doesn't usually put tables together, you can request a few tables in the same area, so you are all close enough to visit together.
Have you filled out your wedding form yet that the resort sent? I am in the process of filling in my form now. I still haven't decided exactly what we are going to do, but right now I am leaning toward having a cocktail hour right after the wedding followed by dinner at the Seaside Grill. It's hard to make the decision without ever having been there. I still go back and forth about having an actual private reception, but I guess I can always change my plans once I get there. I do agree though that the extra fee seems a little silly for a small group. I will have less than 20 total. I can see if we had a much larger group, but for such a small group it doesn't make much sense. Honestly, I am still considering doing a cocktail hour followed by the buffet just for simplicity. I also didn't know until recently that the Portofino wine cellar would be an extra $200 charge or else I would have probably gone that route. Have you made your final choices?
