Exactly the thread I needed to read tonight! I have been working on the AHR recently as with our wedding in November I think I need to get a venue booked back here asap to avoid the Christmas party craze. But as I got further into the planning and meeting with venues I started to realize that it was turning into exactly the type of wedding we were trying to avoid by going away! The big hall, the catered food, the receiving line, the head table... all things that neither of us really want. What we really want is a casual bbq at our farm with people welcome to bring their RVs and stay for breakfast the next morning. Obviously can't be done in November in Alberta sooo.... I am glad to read here that others have waited on the weather. Now I am thinking wedding in Nov, AHR in June or July - perfect!! AND I just spent the evening with my FMIL and had a good talk with her and discovered that she doesn't really feel the need to have a big "formal" reception - I was under the impression that it was important to her as she has a big family but not at all! Yay!! She thinks a bbq party next summer is a great idea... now for my mother!
