At the last wedding I went to the father gave a speech, my FI (a co-best man), the other best man, two MOHs, and then these two random ladies who were friends with the bride's mom got up and each gave speeches. It turned into an open mic night! I think it's important to set limits on who gets to give speeches so they don't take the whole reception. I have heard a lot of drunken speeches, so I like the idea of doing them at the rehearsal dinner.

Thanks for sharing. I have been debating whether to have one and when I think about trying to make conversation with all these people I barely know, I don't get too excited about it. As you all have said, this is why my fiance I want to have a DW so we are surrounded by our closest friends and family. I am thinking we probably will do one for my extended family and parent's friends, but I will probably have the same feelings as mich999 about it.

Also, don't forget the sand might be really hot (depending on when and where the wedding is) so you might want to buy flip flops, even if they are for back up. The DB flip flops come in white and ivory!

OMG - I am SO glad to hear other brides have this same issue. I must have asked my fiance a million times if there was any other family he wanted to invite and he said no. Like other DW brides, we only wanted people there who we actually know and keep in touch with. Then, after we had sent out the STDs, FMIL decided she wanted to invite all her brothers and sisters - not because they would want to come but because maybe they would send us a gift. I tried to explain to my fiance to relay the message to his mother that we are not inviting people to our wedding for the gifts we might receive but because we wanted to share our day with them, but in the end, I ended up making more STDs to appease her because it was easier than fighting.
