  1. Don't the packing experts always say, more money, less clothing?
  2. Yes, thank you so much for the thorough response. I know Mexico is not California, but I also have found that by cutting out layers of middlemen & -women I have often succeeded in finding less exploitative products; likewise by buying things closer to the source, I can cut out the transport/gas/emissions part of the ecological cost of what I am buying, even if it's not made from tree-free paper or recycled metal. We have a lot of time, and will make a few visits to PV between now and the big weekend, so we'll see what we can do. In the meantime, I appreciate your suggestions and welcome any others.
  3. Most people I know in the queer community know better than to go to Jamaica. Fortunately, my non-queer family and friends haven't had weddings there. I can't (and wouldn't even if I could) "pass" and would not feel safe attending one there. If your LGBT friends and relatives do go, I'd make sure they know about what's going on there so they can minimize their exposure to potential danger. GlobalGayz. 4. Feb 2010 here. All our vendors could move to Timbuktu between now and then, but we're doing what we can to move things forward anyway.
  5. We're using papel picado at our wedding. Casa Bonampak Online Store - fair-trade certified store in California. You can have custom banners made with one month advance notice. OR Cut It Out - artist in Texas who makes larger papel picado placemats, tablecloths, etc. She has kits to do your own, so we're sending them to kids of friends & family so that they can contribute to the decorations.
  6. Late arrival to this thread but FYI, Jamaica is among the most dangerous places in the world for LGBT people. Jamaica: Shield Gays from Mob Attacks (Human Rights Watch, 1-2-200 > Bob Marley do a web search on Bob and Rita's comments on homosexuality and you will find that their mellowness did not extend to all areas.
  7. We are having trouble finding any kind of business directory for Puerto Vallarta , and every website is focused solely on tourist-related stuff, restaurants, photographers, etc. We are looking for the following, and would welcome any store names/addresses/URLs you could recommend: - party/fiesta supplies - custom papel picado banners *in or near Puerto Vallarta* (i.e. we could get them a few blocks from home, but we'd prefer not to have to schlep through customs etc.) - eco-friendly (recycled, tree-free, unbleached, etc.) paper/printing--we would rather not kill a rainforest for our festivities! - small folk art gifts for guests--preferably a fair-trade type store, where the artists actually get the proceeds from the $ - any other socially responsible businesses in the area Any tips would be very much appreciated!
  8. Hi, Thanks for the site! My partner and I are planning a wedding in Yelapa, Jalisco, on Feb 27, 2010, and are appreciating the tips we've gotten here. Look forward to sharing my own tips and insights once I know what I'm doing! :-)
