I'm sure it was troubling but it is also really funny if your mom did that. Parents tell there kids things and forget to tell them the truth later on. Not such a big deal but my mom told me that chocolate milk came from brown cows and white milk came from white cows (jokingly). I was always really gullible. Being lactose intolerant, I believed her until an embarrassing situation in 6th grade....parents. If you feel it is a part of your identity you could totally add it when you switch your last name.
