HELP with getting legally married

Ideally, I'l like to bring my FI and I along with our 2 mothers to just sign and be done. How was your experience? At first I wanted to make it feel as unmonumental as possible, like stop by on our lunch break & sign so it doesn't feel like a reall wedding. But, then we decided to make it really special in our own way. It will be a wedding day about the two of us. Kind of like eloping. We are going to our favorite restaurant together. I'm wearing a cute white sun dress. We are just going to spend the whole day together enjoying each other's company. I'm excited. We probably won't tell people that is what we are doing that day. It will just be our thing. We'll I'll tell you guys. -

Thats why I wanted to wait. Only pay for one license. I do not think it will be a problem if my license says "morgan newname" for our flight to mexico. I will just use my passport. I also have a school photo id if they need another form of ID. Then once we get back I'll do all the changing. I'm excited about my new name! I plan on calling the county courthouse to make sure we have everything we need to make it legal. We will be doing that this month! Yay! -
HELP with getting legally married

Do you have to have your own witnesses at a court house wedding? Or will someone there witness? Also, I thought there was an option to change your name at the time you get married. can you do this: Go to courthouse & make it legal & pick the option to change your name, but wait on changing your passport. Then fly to wedding & have a symbolic ceremony. Come back & change passport & license? I also lost my license a few weeks ago. I haven't figured out if I should get a new one now or just wait until I change my name. We will probably to the legal thing in a few weeks. Or do I need my license to get married legally? I have my passport. I do not think the license has to match the passport, because you do not need to show the license on the trip. It would be nice to avoid 2 back to back trips to the dmv! I can't believe I lost my license. I'm so responsible. I lost it the night of my bachelorette party. I know it has to be somewhere in a purse, or the pocket of something. I just havne't found it yet. Mike was in charge of figuring out what we need to do for the legal ceremony, but I think I'm going ot have to do it. -
Do you still send gifts if not attending?
rodent replied to nde062010's topic in Wedding Etiquette, Traditions, to dos
From Emily Post: Guests invited to the wedding have an obligation to send a gift, whether they are attending or not. There are few exceptions. If you live far away from where the wedding will take place and have been out of touch with the couple for several years, and are not planning to attend the wedding, there's no need to send a gift. Also, the receipt of a wedding announcement after the wedding carries no gift obligation, although it's thoughtful to send the couple a note or card expressing your "best wishes." So a lot of the invites we get are from people we haven't talked to in 1-4 years and the weddings are in a different state. I do not feel bad for not sending a gift. If everyone I sent invites to was obligated to send me a gift, I wouldn't have sent so many out. Now my mom wants me to send more invites to people like my friends parents, grandma's friends, etc. She doesn't want them to feel left out. A friend of my grandma was upset she didn't get an invite to my brother's wedding. She wouldn't be attending. She just wanted an invite. I don't feel comfortable sending these people invites less than 2 months before a wedding in mexico. To me that seems like a gift request. So I'm going to make wedding announcements & send them out afterwards. They will have a picture of us from the wedding & a link to where people can see the pictures & video. I think a nice handwritten card should do. I do not think gifts should ever be required even if it's small. If gift giving doesn't feel good, then I think it isn't right. I would hate to get wedding gifts from people who just felt obligated. If they don't really want to get us something, I would much rather they don't. It would make me happy to get notes though saying congrats & just something that would keep us in touch. -

i only send a gift if I want to send a gift. Once gift giving feels like an obligation it kills the spirit of giving. Also, often people send out invites & just hope people rsvp no to keep their budget in line. Maybe she invited you because she felt like she should for whatever reason. I invited some people who are more of a friends friend because I didn't want them to feel left out. In no way at all would I want a gift. We get invited to every single guy who was in this college group with mike's wedding. It the standard for them to send invites to the whole list. no way are we going ot send each one of those people a gift. -
When did you cut you cake...
rodent replied to Christi's topic in Wedding Flowers, decoration, cake, etc.
I'm hoping they will just serve the cake with our dinner. I don't care to cut it. It's a wedding tradition I've never really cared about. I never get up during a wedding to watch. Maybe because I've never liked cake. If it wasn't free with our package I wouldn't have one. There is an ice cream place at our hotel. I wouldn't mind slicing into a banana split after taking pictures on the beach. I timed our wedding so the ceremony would end when the ice cream place opened so guests can go there while they are waiting for us to finish with pictures. I do not think there is an order of events. It seams to be different at each wedding I go to, but I think some time at the end of dinner makes sense. But, you could do it right after the ceremony if you think guests would want a snack. I think anything goes. Just plan the timing so it doesn't interupt the flow. -

Just about everyone I know leaves town then too. A hamster in my carry on? Wouldn't that be a little weird? I know mike's family would laugh at me. I wish I had a child so I could justify getting a hamster. For now I'll have to just keep pretending I have a ferret. I hope I didn't just make this thread sad. -
To OOT or not to OOT??

But now I'm liking the idea of just giving out a mug (or stackable cups - solves the shipping problem), and maybe filling them with some first-aid items (tylenol, immodium), cause I think those will be the most useful stuff. I think it'll be a good balance of giving something nice/useful for the guests, but also being more budget-friendly. Morgan, I'm going to look through your OOT links now. Seems like a lot of useful info!! Thanks so much. I especially like the way you made the individual pill packs, without having to buy them in individual packs. That will definitely save some $$. I'm amazed you only spent $10 each. They look great! PS, Heidi, your pro-pics look amazing! Congrats!! You don't even have to fill the totes. Susan just did a travel mug with stuff packed inside. I just did the math on mine. I spent $180 total. That was with 16 bags in mind, but I have a lot of stuff left over. Some of it will be at our AHR & some I'll sell after my wedding. A lot of the things I bought came as 24 packs so there is excess. I also bought a ton of those cups because they were so cheap I just couldn't pass them up. I'll have them at my AHR & use them for other things. The biggest splurge were the luggage combo locks at $2.50 each. You can probably tell from my thread I had a lot of fun making my OOT bags. I'm so excited to pass them out too. But, I still do not think it's a requirement. You could always just make a nice welcome/ thank you note. Here is a copy from my budget. More details are on my thread about my bags. I hope each thing in there is stuff people will actually use. I'll report back after June. You could easily do just one thing too. There are no rules. Like a mug with a tag on the handle. Or just a welcome letter. Or nothing at all. -

I like the idea of just picking an day. It could be a summer theme, but not be tied in with any particular holiday. I want to play this time. Unless the date is too close to my wedding. Then I'll wait until next time. But, after seeing how much fun y'all had with secret bunny I want in on this game. My secret <insert holiday here> will get a ferret cage & a ferret ball.

I would just worry about him being too tired when it's over. But, i guess you have a rush of energy on your wedding day. If I were you I'd prefer they do it another day, but I'd let them make the final decision.

OOT bags are not a requirement. Do them if you want to. Don't do them if you don't. I spent about $10 a bag, but I feel like it's stuffed with things people will use. The more I read the threads about what guests really used, the more things I added to my list. I had a lot of fun making mine. I also focused on keeping things compact & packable. instead of mugs, I did stacking cups. I did 70 cent lightweight bags. http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t16807 -
I need to vent - I don't want to do this anymore
rodent replied to Celina's topic in Just venting or funnies
I think the trick to not getting down is to make living cheap more fun. Plan some cheap social events so it's not like you are stuck not doing anything because you are saving. You friends might be relieved to save some money & not need to go out that night too. Instead of a group dinner out we'll do stuff like make a big batch of pizza crust & all make our own pizzas. Then BYOB & you have a cheap, fun party. We do board games instead of movies. We workout together, go for hikes, go to the gardens...I'm sure there are more. But, it's very possible to live cheap & still have a lot of fun. Today was a friends b-day. she is really trying to save so her & her husband can start a business. So instead of going out to dinner tonight, we met for lunch. We all brought our lunches from home & sat outside in the nice weather. it was much more fun than dinner at a restaurant. The trick to being happy & living cheap is to be creative about it so you don't feel like you are sacrificing anything. Atleast that is what works for me. -
I don't have time today but otherwise I'd do it. I think moving you over would be really tricky. Something would have to fill in the space behind you. It would be easier to clone out the niece, but that still wouldn't be easy. The grey sweatshirt wouldn't be simple to get right with all the folds. I think putting your head on her body would be the way to go

I was worried I'd be the only one with a ferret badge & eventually I'd just remove it & hope no one remembered my dumb joke. -
