My grandparents always had sheep dogs- they slept with the sheep and guarded them from predators. They loved the outdoors and when they had to come in for anything, you could see they longed to be back out with their "flock." I think they really enjoyed doing their job.
I don't think your a bad mom at all. I personally have inside dogs, but I couldn't imagine anyone would leave their 4 lb dog out at night. I always wanted pets I could bring in the house, so that's more of a reason for us to have our smaller breeds. However, I think you are considerate of your babies so I highly doubt they are being mistreated. You can tell when animals are upset and if yours seem happy, I'm sure they are.
