  3. after all day searching out new locations, we went back to the original spot, and I think we are going to stick with it, hoping that the guys working on it can move some sand back to the beach, which is covered in a rocky shoreline currently... thanks for the kind biddings we have our fingers crossed for everything! cheers! matt y sol
  4. Ok, so i've spent a week down in mexico to take care of my house, and work on some wedding planning. The last time I tried to work on my wedding planning, Hurricane dean said otherwise: check out this blog post Matt Adcock Photography Blog to see why I was evacuating! Well, before I evacuated, I had a week planned to do wedding planning stuff... That obviously didnt get done, so now I have returned and am having meetings, went to do a site visit yesterday and WOW, HOLY COW BATMAN. The beach is gone... now all rocks. not good. 100% makeover due to the hurricane. This makes me sad as we may be choosing another location... thousands down the drain on a deposit... I am meeting with my coordinator today, Yazmin de Lamora, and we are going to visit different villas for site visits... How cool is she for doing this with me? I'll let you know how it goes. now for the goooood news On another note for those of you who don't know our personal situation at home... Sol & I got married on June 2. We did this because of the legal process to apply for a visa for her in the US.. A green card and a travel permit. She entered the country on May 23 and budget 5 months of NO WORK through Oct 25 for this process. Last week we FINALLY received the receipt that they are working on our application and that we should expect 60-90 days MORE from sept 11, to process our request... WHAT? Ok, so I wrote a letter, citing her 8 remaining contracts in 2007 and the urgent need to expedite the application. I sent this letter to my GA Senator and the offices that received our application, sent on Monday last week. yesterdays, we received notice that they ARE EXPEDITING OUR APPLICATION YEAY YEAY YEAY YEAY YEAY so happy now! Good things do happen Cheers! matt

Just so you know, Professional photography at an mayan ruin like: Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza, and any BIG public spot, is forbidden by mexican govt. I'm not saying it hasnt been done before, but the brass tax on the matter is that ya just can't do it. There is a major permit process and we have yet to investigate this yet. We do however, know of a local ruin in playa del carmen, smaller and yet pretty cool, surrounded by jungle and near a private beach, where we go quite a bit. Check out: www.soltamargo.com/portriats/april&kevin to see photos from there.... coooooool stuff. Have you heard about cenotes? Fresh water underground caves, with absolutely clear water and super exotic. Check this movie out: del Sol Photography - Movie - Trash The Dress Quote: Originally Posted by trisha0612 Oh yeah...I emailed Sol for some pricing and they never wrote back..any other ideas on how to contact them?? This is the biggest problem we have right now with our reply emails. IF YOU HAVE A YAHOO ACCOUNT, watch out. I'd say this happens to me at least 1 or 2 times per week. We can't do anything about it either... Yahoo is notorious about it. We are considering adding a disclaimer about checking your junk mail folders, some which, are set to auto delete! OUCH. One thing to consider, we absolutely love doing these sessions with our clients. We consider them adventures and bonding time with our clients. We live here, so we know many many places, some far and remote. We invest our whole afternoon and sometimes the entire day for these sessions, documenting the entire event. We know where to go to catch sunsets on beaches (mayan riviera faces east )and what cenotes to hit too. We have been to swim with whale sharks in the gulf with our clients, such an adventure! The rates aren't the most inexpensive, but one must consider the investment... We shoot weddings every day of the year. We have about 8 weddings in November, 4 or so TTD sessions...a TTD session is almost as important to us as a wedding day is... Check out our associate too, he does these sessions and is more affordable...del Sol Photography - Associate Photographer - Vincent Guihard. He did one yesterday and is on another one today! Hope this helps PS. I'm here working on my wedding planning..... we are sad, the beach where we planned our wedding is GONE, hurricane Dean moved it

We actually do not recommend this, if you hire an outside photographer, it is a better idea to dismiss the resort photographer. Why? The resort photographer is not on the same team as your outside photographer. They will likely be resentful that they are working side by side and thus stand in the way and cover the wedding without consideration of the other photographer. We have seen this first hand, like standing in the middle of the isle, the entire wedding There are a handful of other circumstances that spell bad times... we end up waiving the white flag when we see these guys... Just remember to consider this as you move forward. mateo

As of now and that could change, but I am having him forgo the getting ready pics and start w/ ceremony, individual pics after and reception... if you haven't already... I might seriously suggest having a conversation with a professional photographer about a timeline and outlining the importance of the beginning of the wedding day to you and to that of the photographer hired.... Our minimum is to start shooting 1 hour prior to ceremony... after all, I can't imagine starting my shooting at the actual ceremony start time.... I FIRMLY believe that your photog should be on site with you getting ready for at least 30 mintues before the early bird guests will arrive.... those early birders will be there 30 minutes before the ceremony is suppose to start... FYI.... also, the photog will be shooting you and your girls / family members candidly interacting, and getting amazing stuff prior to the ceremony...put that pressure on the ceremony, ummm, ok, wow.... cant actually imagine that. Photographers are following me and my bride around for hours prior to our wedding. We have NO bridal party... BUT, we do have moments that we will NEVER remember unless photographed. (our grandmothers (mine is 90) are coming to see us before we walk down the isle.... wow, how many times will you have that hug?.... ) As I'm sure you have already thought about these specific time line concerns, I just wanted to write to make sure you had some specific thoughts in mind as you book your photographer... 1-2 hours prior to ceremony is suggested, 2-5 hours after ceremony is suggested by our studio. Out of 250 weddings, 2/3rd have been 5+ hrs. Cheers! mateo
  10. As a wedding photographer who is also having his own wedding in a destination location (riviera maya dec 6, 2007), I can say that we have a pretty big opinion on what to suggest and expect, based on the local market. Keeping in mind that we also live in the Riviera maya, and the once sterotype of "hiring a local photographer is a BAD thing" is now GONE GONE GONE! For our wedding photographer, we kinda lucked out. We actually have 7 WPJA photographers from all over the country attending our wedding, plus 5 other photographers in Atlanta. Out of that dozen or so, one was pissed (he offered for free) that we didnt want him to shoot (we wanted him as our guest) and the other we asked and he offered for free! We spent almost $2,000 for a week of fun at an all inclusive for them and also bought round trip airfare from Arizona. We kinda lucked out, but after being in this biz, we have made a few friends. For most brides coming to the Riviera Maya, expect to pay around 3k for a starting package and 6-7k nicely equipped for the absolute best you can get...there are a handful of local photogs there that will NOT charge you a travel fee. After reading through this forum, I am seeing tons of dollars spent by clients who are flying their photographer into the country to work... Although I understand each person has their own reasons for doing so, I also know that for a fact, it not the most economical choice. Also, you may want to ask if your photographer has a permit to work in the country that you are commissioning him / her to work in. Another consideration of budgeting for a photographer is to consider that recent studies done by Martha Stewart Wedding Magazine have shown that brides are typically spending 10-20% of their entire wedding budget on photographers. I don't think that survey included destination brides, but I would be willing to bet that the percentage is considerably higher for DW brides due to the reduced cost to have a DW wedding.... For example, the reception (food and drinks and tables and such) in mexico would cost us $10,000 -$15,000 EASY if it were in a nice venue in Atlanta GA, where we also live. Mexico is 1/3rd of that cost... SO, more money to put towards photography...um...howa bout a nice BAND Bottom line, I may be biased here because of my career choice, but I do know that you get what you pay for, as some of the brides have said in previous posts. If you comission the resort photographer, be prepared for disappointment... I'm sure this isnt true in all cases. It may be a good idea for someone who is concerned to start a thread asking folks to post their "resort photographer pictures" and then do some comparisons...I'd be willing to bet that comparison will make up your mind on the right choice to make! Keep in mind that these photos will be your only lasting memory at some point. With the graphic design books available these days, you can end up with one amazing layout that will make your friends cry... I would also recommend picking a day during the week to have your wedding, as the costs may be cheaper (if you are having a foreign photog fly in)... Having said all that, I hope that folks will consider to not hire foreign photogs right off the bat, just investigate the regions local talent first. Ask for recommendations, and of course, search here on the BDWF, you are bound to find the right photog! This was not in any way meant to be an advertisement for my services, just an awareness post. PS. Our wedding photog maintains dual citizenship, USA & Mexican Cheers & happy photog hunting! Mateo PSS, investigate the Wedding Photojournalist Association® | WPJA® | Wedding Photojournalism Photos and Wedding Photographers Resources | Reportage and Candid too while considering photogs!

We'll see what happens but whatever is the outcome, I know in the long run we will be MUCH happier with photos from Vincent, rather than the highly unprofessional hotel photographer we met during our site visit. Anyway, round and round we go.... I feel like it is my duty to try to educate so I'm going to chime in here on my 2 cents... this thing is real and each hotel has a different owner, the policies are shady at best.... BUT, your words are being heard. EDR belongs to a franchise, Karisma, owned by a total different group of folks. Karisma is feeling this pressure from wedding coordinators and travel agents who are stating their displeasure with the shadyness. Travel agents are the official bed fillers. Less beds being filled and guests complaining about (lame photo services) offered are starting to make an impact on sales. Karisma headquarters have contacted us, believe it or not, and want to discuss possibilities of offering other photographers. This is a long red tape political discussion, hopefully things will be mutually beneficial for all of us, real soon! What you just said is BAD PRESS for this supposedly high end luxury hotel chain. No multi billion dollar hotel franchise wants to hear this about a service offered at their hotel. Hopefully, through our lobbying and your continued chit chat about services that are LESS than par, we can and will make a change for everyone. If there weren't so many people coming, I'd definitely treat everyone to a snorkeling trip or something. We are taking our guests / friends on two days of tours, that is whoever wants to go along, we are figuring about 15 or so people each day. Monday, we are going to Isla Mujeres, island tour, snorkling, hangin out, watch the sunset over a ICE COLD Cervaza Sol Tuesday, we are headed to tour a few of our favorite cenotes and to check out the Mayan Ruins at Coba, then we are headed to the beautiful beach at Tulum to chill out! Wednesday, chill out. Thursday, BIG DAY Friday, we are going to another one of our favorite cenotes to do our own trash the dress session with a handful of our photographer friends (10). LOTS of our guests will be professional shooters, so we are making a day for touring and shooting FUN Can't wait. Saturday: we are shooting a wedding YIKES, what the hell is wrong with me! Sounds like fun, eh? We talk about the plan for the week here on our wedding website, del Sol Wedding Website and more on our blog, The story of two photographers - Matt Adcock and Sol Tamargo

Hopefully this will stop being an issue. It's especially crappy when it comes up after you've chosen the resort and started planning. The good news is that almost all the wedding planners within the resort want the best for their couples, it's usually someone in management that throws the monkey wrench in. Azul beach is a really great location and I know the wedding coordinator there is adamant about allowing outside vendors for her weddings. Yep, i was contacted by the director of wedding services of Karisma, who told me that one of the OWNERS of Karisma will be calling me, to discuss the "no outside photographer policy", as they want a change.... convincing the owners of this political campaign is another story... We really love shooting at some of their hotels, however they are making it difficult. Our marketing and PR efforts to publish our stuff is out of this world and this is our angle to this company. Quote: Originally Posted by scharke Azul beach is a really great location and I know the wedding coordinator there is adamant about allowing outside vendors for her weddings. Yes, I really love the Azul wedding coordinator, Carolina. However, as of recently, one of our potential clients has recently had her and her travel agent's messages intercepted by Carolina's bosses, Fabio. He is saying that the no outside vendor policy stands... jeeze, what is going on here? more news soon! mateo

Wow, yes, this is now becoming a big time thing with the politics of Karisma Hotels. NEWS... I have been contacted by the director of wedding services of Karisma... This is BIG time folks. Karisma is a franchise, and like any franchise, they make recommendations to their hotels as to the best policies to represent their best interests as a company. Problem is, each Karisma hotel (6 different hotels) is owned by different owners, so the political red tape is a mile thick in this case... Amazingly difficult. So far, EDR and EDR seaside were the hard core players, demanding the fee. Azul and the local coordinator, Carolina were unaware of this fee (amazing as that can be) and willing to allow any outside vendor.... until recently. BUT, there is a catch. And it boils down to you talking to your travel agencies. These hotels care MUCHO about the relationships with their travel agencies... Basically, they bring them big dollars and listen to every beckon and call they are preaching. Travel agencies and coordinators have BIG PULL. We are currently working on negotiations to allow us to photograph on their grounds, forgoing the fee, on the compromise that it is mutually beneficial for world class published photographers to work on their property. Karisma sees the benefit in this, but it is currently a problem convincing the owners of each hotel of this benefit... so for now, it is a inner political war... ONE THAT WE ARE WINNING.... How do we keep winning this war You must tell your travel agent to make demands. Its their way or the friggen highway. Trust me folks, I am doing all I can with this, and absolutely amazed that I am speaking to the owners of the Karisma hotel franchise... I'm not speaking to the owners of the hotels... I've finally made it higher than them!!!! However, it takes your participation in this war to make the final difference. Moral of this story, Talk to your travel agent. These hotel owners ARE CONCERNED about filling beds, and that is ALL they care about. We have shot at azul 10+ times, and never paid a fee. Specifically, we work with http://www.luxe-events.com/ out of Canada, who is a BIG TIME BED FILLER for these resorts owned by Karisma Franchise. Their policy is: our photographer or NO deal. Am I making a point... Your Travel Agent's Angle: our photographer or NO deal, no beds filled Each hotel's reaction: WAIT, please fill beds bottom line. More from my efforts coming soon... good luck, mateo

We have been very seriously considering changing our business policies in regards to weddings we commission during hurricane season... First off, it is a risk for any vendor to take a job in a region during a season where a hurricane can STOMP on their chance to produce clients that contribute to their goal of profitable jobs... Basically, we take big time risks to accept jobs during these times. We live in the region and part of our expense is to support our local offices and employees. Although we also live in the US, we plan to be away from the region prone to hurricanes during the peak season. In turn, this costs our business MORE in travel expenses to go back to our home to work, and even more when an actual hurricane encroaches on the several hundered mile coast line labeled as the Riviera Maya, where we call home. Bla bla bla, what does this mean to you?? Well, to us, we pay $1400 for a 1 way ticket from Cancun to Atlanta to escape the region when we must because we are threatened by a category 5 hurricane... If that ain't a cost of doing business, then I don't know what is....(if you think this chit chat is hype, then hit this blog post for the real deal holyfield) Just be aware, as a bride planning a wedding during hurricane season, regardless of any other details or thoughts, you are taking a risk. As with any risk, you are considering potential loss. Wanna know about potential loss? Just ask my Aug 21 wedding client who had their wedding totally canceled.... It is total HELL trying to get monies back from travel agencies...from hotels, and from vendors... Risk a wedding during hurricane season....we ask that you completely understand the definition of risk and the implications of that risk outlined in your contract. coming from the heart of this disposition, matt
