Hey, can y'all give me some feedback on this email? Trying to come up with something to reassure our guests... Quote: Dear friends & family, Hello! First off, we are very excited about our upcoming wedding! However, we do want to address the "elephant in the room" - the "Swine Flu" which has unfortunately hit Mexico City. We want you all to know that we are on alert and are watching the situation closely. As you know, the U.S. media has a tendency to sensationalize these things. We have been in close contact with 1 person living in Mexico City (with a background in Biology), 1 person who lives in Puerto Vallarta as well as one friend who is down there right now celebrating her honeymoon (she just had a FABULOUS wedding at Las Caletas, by the way! . As of right now there is NOT a travel ban to Mexico. A fellow "Destination Wedding bride" personally contacted the CDC today and this is what she had to say: "Greetings All! I wanted to let all of you know that I just got off the phone with the CDC. I wanted them to clarify "non-essential travel" as it pertains to our situation. As of now they would NOT recommending that we cancel wedding plans as we have invested a lot of time and money in planning (therefore it is essential to us). I do understand that many of you have families that are your number one priority and that our wedding is not considered as essential to you as it is to us. Please know that we are monitoring this very closely. I will call the CDC back in a few days and will give you another update. A lot can change in 7 days. The CDC did make several recommendations for those that still plan on traveling: 1. Call your doctor and tell them you are traveling to Mexico. Request a prescription for Tamiflu for Relenza to take with you. You will have it on hand should you start to develop any symptoms which will drastically reduce your infection. If necessary ask for several disposable masks to take with you (these will be great for pictures!). 2. Take all regular precautionary flu measures (i.e. wash your hands often or use antibacterial lotion (with 60% alcohol or more), sneeze into your sleeve, not your hand and don't shake hands with a lot of people, etc). 3. Monitor your health for seven days after your return." Please understand that this is just another strain of the flu. Every year 300,000-500,000 people world wide die annually from the "regular flu". Mexico city is not very clean (for the most part) and is the 2nd largest city in the world with 22 MILLION people! It is of course sad that some fatalities have occurred, however 150 out of 22,000,000 is not to be unexpected from a flu outbreak like this (in other words, it is not out of the norm). Here is a good article from CNN: Regular flu has killed thousands since January - CNN.com Every single person outside of Mexico has survived this flu and in fact have only reported MILD strains. They are not sure why it hit Mexico City so hard, but that is currently under investigation. Puerto Vallarta is located over 800 KM away from Mexico City. Also, there have been NO reports of swine flu in the state of Jalisco (where Puerto Vallarta is located), nor the neighboring states of Nayarit or Colima. To put things into perspective a bit - we have more confirmed cases here in Texas than they do in the state of Jalisco (where we'll be traveling). It is reported that even in Mexico City, the flu is beginning to level out. Our contact in Mexico City states that they will re-open schools and other public places on May 6th. ** So, all in all - as long as there is not a travel ban imposed on Mexico, we plan on going! ** For further specific updates on Puerto Vallarta, you may visit this website: Puerto Vallarta/Jalisco Swine Flu Updates And as always, CNN is a great source for news. Please try and stay away from channels like FOX, etc. - they really feed off of sensationalizing these kinds of things. A lot can and is expected to happen in the next 7 days. We of course have all of you in our thoughts and in the end it is your decision. We will continue to keep ourselves educated and updated on the situation, and hope you will do the same. ***There are 2 anti-viral medications which have proven very effective in treating this strain of the flu: those are 1) Tamiflu and 2) Relenza*** These MAY BE TAKEN AS EFFECTIVE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES if you are concerned! Just go to your doctor and tell them you are visiting Mexico and request a prescription. And hey - we don't mind if you want to wear masks - would make for some interesting photo ops! We hope to have alleviated some of your fears, and let you know that we are thinking about everyone. We do not feel at this time that there is need for worry. Remember: "Fear" can be the worst 4 letter word out there! Please join us in channeling positive energy! Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you in Mexico!!! Love, Jaime & Martin

Thanks MarieSam ~ times like these are tough but positive attitudes REALLY DO HELP! Everyone, take a deep breath and then just take 5 seconds and S-M-I-L-E! Seriously, try it. Something about tricking your brain. Btw, I just received another email from my friend in MX City and these are some excerpts from her email: Quote: Next Wednesday, May the 6th, most activities will be resumed, schools, gyms, restaurants, etc. I am so sorry to hear all the brides are having to go through this. I do not think this will last long. Perhaps those who had scheduled their wedding this week should postpone the event as not many people will attend the wedding. I truly believe that as long as you follow the hygienic measures you will not have problems. I can tell you which face mask is better. The hand sanitizer is a good idea. I do not like the alcohol-based ones as they dry my skin. I am using apple cider vinegar. It is highly acidic so it kills all the bugs. (Yes, I told her about y'all, and also if you can't tell she's a holistic person hence the recommendation for using apple cider vinegar She is the lead bio-esthetician for SoPhyto Sophyto Organics - Professional Certified Organic Skin Care Products so she knows what she's talking about!)

wow, I've spent all day just trying to catch up on this thread! LOL We are remaining calm. Fingers are crossed that there are no travel BANS to MX. This is just a flu, and there is effective treatment medication out there! We are going to tell our guests if they are worried, go to your doctor and tell them you're going to MX and request one of the 2 anti-virals they are recommending. For now we are not even sending out an email. Waiting to hear what happens and how this unveils in the next several days. So far, the only people who have contacted me (surprisingly!) are FMIL and my Grandma. The total IRONY in all this is killing me though! I was bitten by a "Mexican tick" (just another variety of tick, but it was in Mexico) 2 years ago and I have contracted Chronic Lyme disease from this which let me tell you is WAYYYYY worse than this flu! I sure wish Lyme would get this sort of media attention!!!!!!!! I'm going to see my doctor on Monday - hoping he doesn't advise me against traveling. I really don't see the point - it is just a form of the flu. There are 22 MILLION people in MX City and only 150 deaths! That is not even 1% of the population! I spoke with a friend in Mexico City today who has a background in Biology and she said they are all trying to remain calm. She's working from home, and wears a mask if she goes out or is around an infected person. She believes that the overuse of antibiotics there has led to a decrease in their immune systems (not sure if it's worse than OUR use of antibiotics??). She also said that their country is trying to contain it and trying to also contain what information gets leaked to the U.S. media because of our tradition of sensationalizing EVERYTHING. People all over the world are getting it, they are just focusing on MX because there people have died - that is what she said. I'm concerned right now because of the Exit Screening in place. Since I have Chronic Lyme disease, some of the symptoms are similar ~ I obviously do not want to be detained because they think I have SF when really I already had Lyme. I am going to ask my doctor on Monday if he will write a statement declaring that I already had these symptoms due to a tick-borne illness, and my friend in MX has offered to translate it for me if necessary. So, I have a pre-existing health condition, and I'm not worried about the flu...if that says anything... Like another Texas girl said, there are more confirmed cases here in my own state than in the state where I'm traveling which is Jalisco (we're getting married @ Las Caletas in PV where there are ZERO confirmed cases!). I will let y'all know what my doc has to say. I'm going to ask him if I can take a script for anti-virals with me just in case since I'd be one of the ones "more prone" to contracting it (though I really sense deep down that I will be fine). Lyme is tricky and very complicated to treat (long story, don't have time to go into it here) so I'm hoping I can take the anti-virals. If not, I will just take plenty of hand sanitizer and maybe even wear a mask while at the airport/on the plane (though I will feel very silly doing that in my cute "Bride" tank top! LOL ) Hang in there girls! Canadian brides - I don't know what to say.... this has gotten WAY out of hand. I am praying the U.S. does not impose a travel ban, but you know what - if it does, then like someone else said, I believe things happen for a reason - we may not understand that reason, but we will continue on. Try and think of the positives out there. P.S. I have some sort of a "bug" (stomach issues, ear ache, congestion, etc.) and am having to try and convince my Grandma that's it's not freaking Swine Flu! LOL (sorry but I just have to start laughing at all of this fear, it's ridiculous).

90% of my guests have cancelled
JaimeLynne replied to Blkatz's topic in General Wedding Planning Information
I am so, SO sorry.. And btw, my fiance says to tell you he feels just awful for you both also! We're thinking about you guys! I know we don't know each other well, but there is a certain bond between us DW brides, and most of us can only imagine what you must be going through right now.... *HUGS!!!!!!!!* -

AJS ~ we are still in the "wait and see what happens" mode. We don't plan on canceling unless there is a ban on MX travel. Hoping to hear within the next week or so, fingers crossed!

oh you've gotta be kidding me.. Quote: 7:10pm: Ben Casselman reports: Dallas County health officials have confirmed three cases of swine flu and three more “probable” cases, according to the department’s Web site. The Dallas County city of Richardson will close an elementary school for the rest of the week after a student was diagnosed with swine flu, a school district spokeswoman said. The 250-student school has one probable case and one “suspected” case of swine flu. It was not immediately clear how the Richardson cases were counted in the Dallas County total. None of the Dallas cases appeared to be included in the three flu cases in south central Texas confirmed by state health officials. None of the Richardson students have required hospitalization. The district made the decision to close Canyon Creek Elementary School on Monday afternoon after consulting with county health officials. We live in Dallas COunty... just waiting for those calls to come rolling in... I have a bridal luncheon on Wednesday with a bunch of my Grandma's friends and my sister and FMIL... if they bring this up I think I will flip the F out on them right in the middle of the Denton Country Club!!! LOL uggggh

I bought one when I bought my dress - it was only $39 though. It has 2 layers of tulle and one layer of something else (satin-like?). I tried it on during my first fitting and was HOTTT! I was like "NO WAY!" lol So she just suggested I go buy a simple cotton slip to keep the dress from going between my legs during pics... so that's what I'll do! I will probably wear it back home for our AHR though - I can see how it would help slightly for making better pics...

Check out Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios - they're having a 60% off sale plus some other bonuses... but that's only if you book before April 30th... but keep an eye on their website, they have been offering some incredible deals! It looks like a SUPERB hotel and amazing place for a wedding but is expensive ~ we were able to afford it for our HM given the discount we received upon booking (at that time it was only 33% plus they pay for your airfare up to a certain amount). We will be staying 8 nights there ~ SO excited!!

Thanks for merging the threads Ann! I want to keep this handy in case my guests start freaking out on me. That's how I got them to calm down about the "drug wars" ~ found the info on here first, so I was ahead of the game! As for you girls who are stopping over in Mex. D.F. ~ gosh... I'd just read up a lot on it and how it's spread, etc. before you leave esp. if you're leaving soon. Don't mean to scare you, I'm sure you'll be fine - just take some extra precautions!

Yes, go hop in that pool - STAT! I already got your update on FB but wanted to check in here. And girl - what the heck is Reggie doing leaving you the morning after?!? HAHAH! Martin said "and so it begins..." I am SOOOOOOOO incredibly excited for you, chica!!!! I knew your wedding would be a total success ~ I can't wait to hear all of the amazing stories/details, etc.! *HUGS!!!!!* ~ Jaime

I'm sure there would be a much stricter warning if it was a serious threat to tourists. Oh Mylanta!!! Serious eye roll going on over here... lol I had a guest calling/txting me FREAKING out over the "drug war" issue in MX, saying she had 3 friends who had already cancelled their trips to MX. Aye yi yi... had to deal with that and now this?! I think there is another thread on BDW about this and I read that earlier... well, my Grandma called about 15 mins later saying "have you heard the news?". I thought "uh oh, someone's either preggo or sick..." so I said "is it good or bad?" and she said "bad" and then just paused for like 5 seconds (scared the sh!t outta me! LOL). then she told me about this mexican swine flu... thank goodness i'd just read about it on here, and was able to tell her it actually started (they think) in the southern U.S., and apparently CA is is experiencing issues too.. so, basically you could also get sick if you stayed home. (Maybe not that simple, but...) Sounds like it's confined right now to Mexico D.F. (Mexico City). I'm getting married 1 mo. from today in PV, and looked it up and it's about 800+km away from there. SERIOUSLY hope my guests do NOT start freaking out about this one too!!! ARGH!!! Just be smart like you would at home ~ like someone else said, wash your hands, try to avoid germs as much as possible, etc... If there was a huge epidemic they would severely warn against travel to MX, IMO!
